The dream dies

I'll admit it: I had myself convinced that this was the year, and I'm stunned that the Louisville Cardinals won't be playing on the final weekend of the season.

It won't be too long before we're all able to reflect sensibly on this amazing year and all this team was able to accomplish, but for now, everything sucks.

It just wasn't our day, and because of that it just wasn't our year.

Bilde_medium

I'm crushed.

says it all. if there has been a more disappointing loss, all things considered, as a louisville basketball fan, i’m either forgetting it or wasn’t born.

why, oh why, couldn’t we have drawn oklahoma or duke? or even memphis? i was afraid of this matchup, but this was way worse than i anticipated.

make no mistake, however. we will be back. we had a great season, and the 06-type letdowns are behind us. nobody knew what we were going to do without francisco in a cards uniform, either, don’t forget. this one is gonna hurt for awhile but keep your heads up, cards fans, and ignore the vermin coming out of the woodwork to criticize our team. they are going to be silenced sooner than later.

Rutgers

I cannot imagine a Louisville loss ever hurting as badly as the Rutgers football game in 2006, but this is in my top ten.

This will always be one of those games that our guys wish that they could replay again, but that’s not the way this tournament works. I also hated to see T-Will end his career on this type of note with such a lackluster performance, but he will always be loved.

I was telling my eight year-old, who was literally in tears today, that there is a real fine line between greatness (’80 and ’86) and insignificance. Oh sure, this team accomplished a great deal, but greatness begins with at least making the Final Four at the University of Louisville – true greatness, the kind that still to this day requires a guy like Roger Burkman to sign autographs for Louisvillians, requires a National Championship.

I am proud of these guys and I am proud to be a Louisville Cardinal. Good luck to Angel and the girls.

with all due respect

i completely disagree about the rutgers loss; louisville football just doesn’t come close in my mind, but that is a debate for another day. also, greatness is hard to judge, and while everyone is disappointed that this team picked a most inopportune time to play poorly, i don’t think anyone can say that this team was anything other than great. it’s a bitter end to a great season, but it hardly makes it insignificant or not great.

worse loses

Ridiculous goal tend against Pervis @ UCLA.
US Reid and his half court shot.
THE missed free throw against UCLA when we would have won the title against UK.

I had to hold back the tears. These guys made it a memorable year. I see major upswing with the boys coming back (except Edgar). It was a phenomenal year fellas!!! I already miss Jerry and Edgar.

Jerry and Edgar are both juniors.

So I guess you’ll only miss them for a few months.

Pure Distrurbing

that is one of the saddest pictures I have ever seen. It still hasnt completely set in for me, but that picture may have been the nail in the coffin.

I honestly cannot decide

if it would have been better to have limped along like we were back when we were 8-3 and just a pretty good team instead of bordering on greatness like they were. I don’t mean I’d give back the BE titles, but just talking about avoiding how I feel since we lost. My hopes had been steadily rising over the past couple months, and it made this loss so much more crushing to me as a fan. I know most of you will rip me a new one for this, but I honestly cannot say that I wouldn’t take a less stellar year overall if it meant not having this utterly bleak feeling I can’t seem to shake. Selfish, I know, but that’s how I feel. Man, it is tough to be so into my beloved Cardinals. Maybe tomorrow some perspective will return, but for now all I can do is try to sleep. I hate this more than I can say.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 29, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

know how you feel, dude

but in time i doubt you will feel this way. it was a bitter end to an otherwise awesome season, but i wouldn’t change anything about it, other than the two unfortunate hours earlier today.

by doctorofdunk on Mar 29, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I almost agree.

The 8-3 is what made this loss so hard to take. It just felt like the team was going to be another average team, stumble into the NCAA as a 5 or 6 seed, make it to the second round and go home.

And then one day, it was like it just clicked. Everybody bought in to Pitino’s ideas and started playing like they should. They just started doing whatever was necessary to win. Sure, we took a couple hits there in the season, but everybody does. It just always felt like these guys wanted it enough to not let themselves get outdone. Like being down by 10 to Pitt. Seeing the lead against Notre Dame (the first time) crumble and go to OT, then dominate. Watching them miss free throws to ice the West Virginia game, but pull it out anyway. Watching them go two games in a row down at the half (where they had been not good during the regular season) and battle back to double digit wins. Then watching a senior single handedly put a game on his shoulders to advance his team further into the NCAA tournament and keep the dream alive. It just always felt like they wanted it, they needed it, and they were going to do whatever it took to get it.

And in a twenty minute stretch, watching all that will and desire dissolve and the 8-3 team come back… it was like the time your first pet died. Truly disturbing and almost unprecedented. For me, it hurts even more since I’m a senior at UofL, and I really was hoping to see this happen while I’m here. It will take a LONG time to get over this. I will never forget this team.

Extremely well said

The promise that came with Sosa’s dagger of a season full of limitless potential and greatness came crashing down in Lucas Oil Stadium yesterday. Even though I’ve had the chance to sleep on it and gain some perspective, this feeling still sucks. I was so positive that this would end our 13 year NC drought—an assurance that only makes the loss that much more painful.

I refuse to believe for a second, however, that it will be many years before we achieve the same level of greatness. With an incredible inbound recruiting class, two great centers, a “bulldog” of a defender, a previously-troubled guard who has started in recent weeks to tap into his true potential, and the greatest towel-waver in the nation and future leader of this team, we as the cardinal faithful, still have a lot to look forward to.

Don’t get me wrong, T-Will’s personality, McGee’s hounding of opponents’ guards, Will Scott’s genius/oop feeding abilities, and Clark’s pure talent will be hugely missed. I think it’s safe to say we’ll never have a team quite like this year’s, but couldn’t we have said the same after 1980, 1986, and 2005?

That sucked.

Sucked hard. This one will take awhile to get over.

Last year, we got beat by a better team. We could have played a great game last year and beat UNC, but they were just better. But today’s game, we got beat by a worse team. We play them 10 times we beat them 7. I just can’t believe our season ended with us playing like that. Stupid Big Ten. Give them credit, ya, but still. I can’t believe this amazing season ended…..like that!

For a few moments after the game, I started thinking about next year and saying that, you know, we’ll probably be down a little next year, T-Will and Earl are irreplaceable, after getting so close this year, regular season games with Providence and Austin Peay just won’t be that big of a deal, I probably won’t organize my entire life from January – March around UofL basketball, etc, etc. etc. etc.

And I thought, I mean it this time.

Likely not though. See everyone for the Georgetown College exhibition live blog.

the sadest day for me as a cards fan. I felt that this was our year and that it was destiny for us to win it all…again the Cards always seem to disappoint us and kick us straight in the balls.

I know the day for me to see the Cards win a championship will be here…as I am only 20 years old…but this lost is just a tough one to swallow.

Allow me to introduce myself...

Hey everyone, I was not going to speak or become a member but in light of these people ripping you I felt compelled to.

My name’s Jim and I’m a senior at Notre Dame, and an Irish fan through and through. I watched my team’s season theoretically end live in NYC when we lost to West Virginia in the second round of the BE Tourney (though we’re actually in the NIT final four now). After that, I kept watching the tournament of course, because I love basketball. I came out of that tournament fairly impressed with Louisville, and because of it I picked them to win it all in my bracket this year. However, I wanted to learn more about this team, so I found this site. I have to say that I now love this team. While they sometimes do a little bit of showboating, you can see how much fun this team has playing the game and as a Long Island boy I have long loved Pitino. They also play some pretty sick defense, which let’s be honest is not my team’s forte. What I came away most impressed with was the fans here. You all love your team and it shows, and it impressed me and made me even more confident with my pick. I thought this team really was gonna take it.

That was a tough, tough loss. MSU played better than I’ve ever seen them play and they gutted out a tough game. However you guys finish at 31-6 (i think) with both regular season and tournament BE titles, which is a hell of a season. You guys are a program to be respected, and its where I want my Irish to eventually be, and I have faith we’ll get there. But now to my main reason I wrote this in the first place.

Lute and others trashing this team on this site, what you are doing is wrong. You are kicking a fanbase that just suffered a bonecrushing loss and taking glee in it? That’s sick, man. I felt this way in 2005 when ND lost to USC in football, and when we lost to ’Nova in early March this year to kill our at-large hopes. It is a painful feeling and to have someone rub in your face makes you want to come to blows (which I might have done in their place if I knew who you were). I probably have right to be furious with this team, as our OT loss to them triggered a 7 game spiral we never recovered from. But you have to realize how much people have invested in these games, and this, this HURTS. Bad. So enjoy your Final Four, fly the Big East flag proudly, but back off for now man. You are obviously entitled to your own opinions, here is not the right place for them.

Anyway, thank you, Louisville Basketball team, for a great tournament. And thank you to the fans on this site that made me fall in love with them. You have become my #2 team in our conference and I wish you guys the best in the future. Just not when you play us, of course (go irish).

Oh and the site? Awesome. Sorry I took so long, and now I’m done, promise.

Spartan fan

Hey guys,

My name is Chris and I am an MSU fan and alum. I’m going to try to clear the air a little bit after some of the “messy” comments that were made by some Spartan fans.

FIrst of all, congrats to the Cards and your fan base on a great season. You guys won the BET and were the regular season champs and #1 overall seed. You guys should not hang your heads low. Pitino is a great coach. Just hope that the Cards can learn and grow from this loss and be a better team next year.

Secondly, I have to admit that I am somewhat embarassed on the behavior and comments that I’ve read hear from the Spartan fans. Lute and buchner, why are you kicking a team after a loss?? Are you pissed that this team wants to celebrate a little after a win. I understand the exclamation dunk at the end of the Arizona game shouldn’t have happened, but their young kids who are enjoying a win! Sometimes kids get caught up in the moment like Sosa did in front of the camera of the Cards-U of A game. And Lute, where in the hell do you classify that the Louisville basketball team as “bad people”? That is an assinine and ignorant comment that should be left off this forum. Show some class and respect becuase you are becoming a hypocrite with your comments. I appreciate the Spartan support, but don’t let your “vomit form the mouth” affect the rest of us fans. Comment on here like an adult(?) and not act like your shoe size.

Thanks a bunch

MSU has some classy fans, but not all of them. Just like every team, obviously UofL showboats a little bit, but sometimes all the hate is unneccessary. Our kids played their hearts out, and I congratulate them for a great season.

It Could be Worse...

It was a great season and we accomplished alot and should be proud, but we just didn’t have the maturity to take it to the next level. I try and look on the bright side after our loses and the only thing I can think of is: “It could be worse. We could be little blue brother to the east and not have a coach and no one outside of Travis Ford who wants the job.”

by JMC1 on Mar 30, 2009 5:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

As much as I take beef with UK, kicking them while they’re down this year is no different than the comments being made about us after yesterday. We are both proud basketball traditions and have tasted greatness more than most programs can ever hope to. My respect remains high (even if I hope we kick their ass in every sport and competition ie football, basketball, baseball… blood drives… jigglyball…)

by SpeedStudent on Mar 30, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was good of the MSU and ND fans to leave their comments...

thank you. Yes, we had a wonderful season; a wonderful run. It IS sad that it had to end the way it did but it’s over and done now. We will never forget the fun we had this year and we thank our Cardinals and especially our seniors for that and wish them the best as they move on. We WILL be back and with so much talent, we will have a shot at a run again. This is Louisville; THE University of Louisville of the red and black…..these colors don’t run. Think of our team next year….SamSam, TJ, Sosa, Smith, PK etal. Are you looking forward to seeing Siva suit up?? Fly your car flags and wear you BE Championship shirts everywhere. We have NOTHING to be ashamed of and we need to show our city that we are still here and ready for next year. With thanks and gratitude to all of you who made watching all of the games a little easier just by “being there” (on CC) with me , thanks to Mike for this site and the opportunity to vent as needed and to our beloved Cardinals and Coach, I’ll let go of the dream for this year knowing we’ll pick it up again come next BB season. Go CARDS (and good luck to our Lady Cardinals today)

Most disappointing loss ever?

I don’t know. I can’t decide this morning whether we let a potential national championship slip away or whether we overachieved all season long. Regardless, we really laid an egg in our last game. And someone can probably make the case that both players and coaches were responsible for producing that egg. Izzo is terrifice, of course; so is Pitino. But we only scored back-to-back one time, early in the second half. Michigan State put it away by scoring on 11 straight possessions.

We were not ourselves. It’ll take some discerning to discover whether our players were at fault or whether Michigan State was simply much the better team. I know this much, I thought we would compete harder — and yes, I’m talking about our freshman centers and T-Will. And heck, their guards outplayed our guards, too. It’s all just so discouraging.

I was trying to draw some comparisons in my mind for "most disappointing loss ever"

1975 Final Four loss to UCLA because of Terry Howard’s missed free throw—after making 28 of 28 on the season

1981 The loss to Arkansas and U S Reed on his half-court prayer

1983 Final Four loss to Houston’s Phi Slamma’s

1991 ? Loss to Ball State

But…we competed hard in those contests and just came up short

Here… honestly, we looked like we gave up when we were only down by 9 with about 10 min to go

That was very disheartening to see….but had been seen in earlier losses this year, when we couldn’t break someone with our D, and our shots weren’t falling

The legacy of this team and T Will ? Unfortunately it will be forever known as an underachieving team—even though it achieved much and truly had a great and entertaining season.

by frankpos on Mar 30, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

U.S. Reed

I vote for that one. I was still in diapers in ’81, but my dad still talks about it.

The ‘83 loss to phi slamma jamma certainly sucked b/c UL was stacked that year, but Houston was great too (obviously) and so I wouldn’t put it in the “most disappointing” category.

by kidbourbon on Mar 30, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah

My dad also still talks about that 1975 loss on the missed free throw.

So sorry about yesterday, Frank

The losses you mentioned were all grave losses. All different.
The ‘81 loss to Arkansas (I believe there were only 48 teams in the tourny and we had a first round bye) was a true shocker.
I remember shaking my head “no, no, no,” and I was angry that we let ourselves get into a situation that would allow us to lose by such a lucky shot.
The loss to Houston was both important (it was so exciting that in my opinion, it ushered in, or at least made more immediate, the coming of the shot clock) and a colossal kick in the balls. Both teams were thorobreds, I thought we were better, thought we had the best team. They had Larry Meshaw, Clyde Drexler, Hakim Alajuan, Michael Young…and would go on to place in Final Four three out of four years. I really thought we’d win after we beat the Twin Towers and UK, but they took us down. And it was RUDE.
1991 against Ball State…again, Everick clanging the last shot off the back of the rim…it was the day the music died…the start of the realization that the dynasty was waning and we’d never see the previous heights again.

But the ‘75 loss to the UCLANS? Didn’t hurt me at all. Those magnificent parachute jumpers by Junior Bridgeman showed that not only could we play with the big boys, but a new order would be coming, and coming soon.

but I personally didn’t mind the negative comments. Yep, they might’ve stung a little right after the game but hours later I couldn’t care less. It’s people like this that make CBB what it is. I vote for leaving their comments up—their words have no control over us.

Being a student WKU

I thought it couldn’t get much worse than the last second loss to Gonzaga. But I remembered that WKU was a team that defied all expectations and made it to the dance against all odds. I really thought this was UofL’s year. It was the first time I had put the Cards going all the way with confidence that they actually could. It sucks for T-Will, someone we have loved his whole career and were so happy to finally see him hit his stride and become a good and consistent player, and now his college career ends on a team with a reputation of not living up to it’s potential. We still have Samardo and the beast Jennings. This time last year I was wondering who was going to take over leading the team after the god David Padgett left but someone stepped up. I wasn’t alive back then but 1983 when we ran up against the “Phi Slamma Jamma” we only had one title under our belt. But three years later we had another national title. The second Golden Age of Cardinal basketball is coming!

This season HAS shaved ten years off my life.

from the highest of highs on Friday night to the lowest of lows yesterday. Im still totally bummed out. It just feels like a piece of me is missing. To see those pictures of TWill, PK, and seeing Jerry all by himself after the game just breaks my heart. I honestly thought this team would go all the way. I had that feeling…

So depressed

The 3.5 hour drive up and the nearly 5 hours trek back didn’t help either.

75% of the crowd was ours, coming off the best game of the year, and then to just revert back to everything else. It certainly makes you appreciate the less talented ‘05 team. Less talented, but they had……it. And we’ll have a team that has it again, it just wasn’t this year. I think Kuric, Delk, and Swop will be better next year as they get more time to develop. Smardo will probably play more 4, and sosa and smith are gonig to have to lead this team. We need a PG who can run the offense and won’t get rattled, and I hope to god Sosa can be that guy for a year.

And hopefully next year they leave the hot doggin at home and bring the killer instinct instead.

I've come around.

I was devastated yesterday after the game. Tom Izzo is a class act, but loses like this always sting.

However, I think we overcame some major deficiencies and losses early in the season to have one hell of a season. Can’t ever complain about back to back Elite 8s. We’re still on the rise, getting some great recruits, and we’ll back in the hunt sooner rather than later.

Sucks to lose the seniors and E-5, but I’m feeling a little better about our future. Losses like this will help us, especially with playing against Big 10 teams (which have owned us). Sosa, TJ, Sam-Sam, Reggie, Jerry…all of these guys have improved and will form a hellacious core for next year.

Agree with dipfis about the hot dogging.

You can’t hot dog your way to the final four, and here’s hoping that Coach Pitino puts an end to that stuff. By the way, Eric Crawford’s blog today — posted at about 1 a.m. this morning — is worth a read. He notes that Coach P was so upset that he three his clipboard to the floor and that was when the score was just 4-2. He saw what was happening; too bad he and the guys couldn’t stop it.

Having fun is fine, but geez,

there was a great quote by Coach McCarty …before the game..

he basically said the coaches never could predict how this team would be any given night

by frankpos on Mar 30, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

the team handicapped the coaching staff with their attitudes. Still, this is primarily the coaches’ onus to change that crap before it starts. Bring the team’s leaders in the office and tell them to STFU and play ball. Then again, maybe this happened, which led to TWill’s benching in the 1st half when things weren’t exactly working out.

This was the biggest heartbreaker

Seriously guys, this will be hard for me to get over. Might take till next season, maybe longer. I’ve never been so involved in Louisville basketball. This was my favorite team ever. They are the most exciting team I’ve ever watched, and that in itself would be enough, but they WIN. They always find a way to win. Plus, they have so much character with Twill, Dre, Jerry, all those guys. I’m going to miss them greatly.

I don’t know, maybe I’m insane, but I probably yelled at every single field goal and free throw scored against Louisville this season. My roommates thought I was crazy, my girlfriend thought I was crazy, everyone at work also…thought I was crazy. You all are probably the only ones who don’t think I’m crazy. But something about the way UL finally went down, from the VERY top to the very bottom killed something inside me. Twill didn’t do anything. The whole friggin team didn’t look like they had any energy. They were completely outcoached, otherwise they would have been more prepared for this boring, 1978-style basketball.

This is why I am conflicted: I don’t know whether to be upset with Twill for not showing energy, at RP for not preparing the team for this style of basketball, or at MSU for being ridiculously lucky at the right time in combination with playing a style of basketball that was more boring than watching paint dry. The way MSU plays basketball goes against everything I like about the sport. They friggin KILL the fun, the excitement, the fervor of the game. MSU being rewarded for playing such crappy basketball is what really gets me. But you know, that’s just how it goes sometimes.

Right now I’m totally disgusted with UL, but I hope to god that changes before next season starts.

But Pretz

MSU imposed their will on us.
I agree, it was not fun to watch (I dread the UCONN-MSU semi) but for Izzo and the Spartans, the end justified their means.

And if we were so good, we would have c h a n g e d the way the game was played.
Know what I mean?

That's true

But it just seems like unless a team is extremely inexperienced, they can slow the game down if they want to. How can you speed it up? If a team gets the ball past halfcourt, how can you force them to take early, bad shots? If a coach has drilled it into their heads that they need to slow it down and run the shot clock every possession, I don’t know what can be done. Other than guarding Suton better, I don’t know what our D could have done.

If We Were As Good As We Thought We Were

We are aware of the way they will play, we get ahead early, stay ahead, and make THEM change the way they play.

That would make them speed up, I think.

And also, as Twist points out in another section of The Chronicle, we could have gone to man to man earlier.

But we did nothing to the slow drip of defeat. Nothing at all.

Didn’t even try.

Yes, good man, yes

And that high bar setting for “real loss” helps put things in perspective. Nobody actually died.
Again, those who loved you on Saturday, still love you on Monday…Your family, your girlfriend, your pet. Do you think that any of those who actually suffered the defeat are hurting half as much for their followers as their followers are for them? Do you think Showboat Edgar is worrying about you, over there? Maybe, but maybe not. Still, it hurts.

In the course of his campaign, Adlai Stevenson had become famous for his anecdotes. None he had ever told was more fitting than the one which he added to his formal concession statement. Someone, he said, had once asked Lincoln how he felt after losing a political campaign. Said Stevenson: “He said he felt like a little boy who stubbed his toe in the dark. He was too old to cry, and it hurt too much to laugh.”

At What Point Will I Feel Better About This?

I had no idea it was possible to go from the high of Friday (which no doubt made the excitement in Indy a lot more noticeable) to the extreme low of Sunday afternoon. I also had no idea that 2 days away from the game when I should be able to look back on the season and feel as though we made a remarkable run, all I can think about is how it ended. The picture of T-Will in the locker room says it all.

T-Will and McGee combined for 5 pts, 8 reb, 5 assists, and 3 turnovers; is that any way for those 2 to leave the court as Cardinals? I honestly think that is what bothers me the most. There was something special about this season, and to know that those guys went out like that puts a damper on it. The biggest game of their college careers, and to put up those numbers.

That being said, this year was remarkable. We accomplished things that I would have never expected (ie. Big East regular season championship, Big East conference tournament championship, our first ever number 1 ranking in the AP and Coaches Poll during the regular season, and the number 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament). I know that at some point I will be able to feel great about those accomplishments, and I think that time is really soon.

Michigan State made us play their game, Izzo drew up the perfect gameplan to take our stars away and slow our pace. It just wasn’t our day, and I think if we played MSU 5 times, we would win 3 of those games; but that’s what is so great about March, anybody can beat anybody on a given night. Sunday wasn’t our day.

Optimism for next season should be high once again though, the team we are returning is an excellent team (possibly better than this season’s team). The improvement our big men made during the season was unbelievable, and they are all returning. We are returning excellent guards (please make sure Good Edgar comes back to campus next year, if I see Bad Edgar I might lose all hope)…and our incoming freshmen can make an immediate impact (I’m speaking of you Siva).

On a side note, a big thanks to every Card fan who travelled to Indy, UofL gear was everywhere and it felt like a huge extended family. You couldn’t walk five feet without seeing somebody else in a Card shirt it seemed. Our fan base truly is the best in college sports.

Now it’s time to cheer on the women!!! It’s your time to shine Angel…

PS….can we just skip football season?

I think youre right about next year

really, there is a couple of rather large gaps in rebounding, steals and assists-but for some reason I have a feeling that Sosa is going to finally play to his potential, Jerry is going to start right back up where he left off, Samardo is going to work in the off season on lateral quickness and rebounding, TJ is going to have a monster year, and PK is going to be our go to guy from beyond the arc. If Swop can put some muscle on over the summer he will be much improved, Delk will be a valuable asset as well. Add to all the returning talent -the Big East will be down next season-so it shouldn’t hurt us as bad. I think we will be fine..

Dude, you are so dry tonight

Samardo “to work in the off season on lateral quickness.” Quickness is inherent, isn’t it? I don’t think you can pick it up through a correspondence course at Phoenix University.

All that you point to is true, though, Twist. Yet the phrase “rebuilding year” seems to be at the tip of my tongue.
Hope your right, I’m wrong.
No matter what, they will still be our team and the Cardinals are always f u n.
