Pitino snags national coach of the year award
Via blog de Bozich:
Louisville coach Rick Pitino and Blake Griffin of Oklahoma were the hardware winners from the Commonwealth Athletic Club.
Pitino was named national coach of the year. Griffin, the OU junior, earned player of the year. They are scheduled to pick up their hardware April 2 in Detroit, site of the 2009 NCAA Final Four.
Griffin was joined on the first all-American team by Stephen Curry of Davidson, Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina, Hasheem Thabeet of UConn and DeJuan Blair of Pittsburgh.
Named to the second team were Terrence Williams of Louisville, Jodie Meeks of Kentucky, Luke Harangody of Notre Dame, James Harden of Arizona State and Ty Lawson of North Carolina.
The winners were selected by a panel of active Division I coaches and media members.

Is this the same award...
I blogged about under Rupp Award? Pat Forde told the guys at WKRD Early Bird that Pitino won that National Coach of the Year award a couple of days ago. Sorry if I scooped you, Mike. No harm, no foul……. LOL

Hey Guys
What do you think of that first team All-American Team?
Does it seem to be missing a guard?
I guess Thabeet is expected to bring the ball up. Oh boy.
And honestly is Thabeet the best center in the country?…is he the best center in his own league? Maybe so?
I love Curry, I know he was among the country’s scoring leaders, I knew he’d be the tony pick, but I assume he’ll be back next year, and if we’re only gonna have one guard on the team, I think it should be somebody else, like maybe the kid from Syracuse, but not necessarily him.
I think Terrence belongs on the team ahead of both Thabeet and Curry. He’ll bring the ball up as well as Curry, pass better than Curry, score better than Thabeet, rebound as well as Thabeet.
So lets leave Thabeet and Curry both off and have a four man All American Team: Blake, Hansbrough, Blair all underneath. TWILL as guard-forward-center.
Or maybe just TWILL.

Keep the hardware
…and hand me the scissors…I’d rather collect more nylon anyways…looks good draped around those NC trophies, doesn’t it?
TWill deserves 1st Team honors over Curry on my ballot. Davidson didn’t win their league or make the NCAA Tourney.
I want to say that UL w/o TWill would’ve been more successful than any of the 1st Teamer’s teams w/o their All-American…so you could spin this as a testament to UL’s depth. And if he needed to score more, TWill arguably would’ve, and that’s likely why he’s on the 2nd Team.
No worries though…never been much a fan of sports popularity contests anyways…
