NCAA Tournament early session open thread
I'm here live at Card Chronicle Headquarters where the weather is gorgeous and the wireless screwy.
The most wonderful time of the year is upon us.
Your soundtrack:
Your schedule:
8) LSU vs. 9) Butler (South/12:20)
2) Memphis vs. 15) Cal-State Northridge (West/12:25)
8) BYU VS. 9) Texas A&M (West/12:30)
Not exactly starting things off with a bang. Until, of course, Northridge goes ballistic from beyond the arc and carries a six-point lead into the break.
Be sure to check back here once the games start as we should (hopefully) have some cool tools from CBS that will allow you to watch the games live on this site.
Watch the games live right here.
This month might be OK.

Gus Johnson
is exactly how I would imagine Jerry Smith as a basketball commentator

My crystal ball says...
LSU vs. Butler: I expect the bayou bengals to handle this one easily, despite the closeness of the seeds.
Memphis vs. Northridge: this is the kind of game Memphis has been winning all year, and that will continue – at least until Saturday.
BYU vs. A&M looks to me to be the most interesting matchup of the three. I’ll call it a tossup; I’ve been picking A&M on my brackets, but that’s really just because I don’t LIKE Brigham Young.
However, the burning question is: are we counting down the minutes to the start of the tourney, or do we count Morehead’s “opening round” game and say the tourney has been underway since Tuesday night?
Agree, agree and agree
Kind of odd that BYU and A&M met in an 8/9 game last year. Just doesn’t seem right.

Your opening game starter is...
THE Jim Nantz

Watched the first bit of Butler v. LSU
That was some crappy basketball. I’m sure it is tough to lead off the entire tournament, but there were some ugly “first game jitters.”
Keep this interesting, Matadors
Because I couldn’t give two shits about the other games.

The Gus Johnson video is awesome
“Here comes the pain.”
Would have liked some clips of him calling Sosa “el tigre” (my spanish sucks).
Oh, that changes everything.
Thought it meant “the guy who will disappoint you the next two season.”
True & funny...but he's hit more game winning shots vs. UK than any of us have...

I really don’t have any major complaints about Sosa, but if you had asked me during or after the A&M game about him, I would have predicted him averaging 13-16 a game this year. Actually, if you’d have asked me during that game, I probably would have predicted he’d average 30 a game and sobered up to predict 13-16.
Does the Dribble-Drive-Motion work against zone?
I’ve been wondering that all year.
Anyone have any insight?
Man..
Butler is disappointing me, CalStNorthridge could potentially ruin my CC bracket (wouldnt hurt my feelings a bit..lol) and TX A&M is making me proud..
definitely thought butler would play a little better
just looks like they’re out classed in the athlete dept.

i was hoping we would get to meet up with memphis and stomp them
but a first round exit at the hands of cal st northridge works just as well
only 3 at the half.
i fully expect memphis to go on a 20 point run, but i badly want northridge to keep it close. the ncaa tournament is the only reason i would ever watch northridge v. memphis.
Memphis
Memphis is soft. They are playing like they are high as hell (which they probably are). UL will kill them should they meet in the Final 4.
Hes no Bobby Gonzalez..
Im with you on wishing losses..but Calhoun is a good coach

I can't find this on teh intertoobz
A Google news search for calhoun hospitalized returns only stories about his bout with the flu back in January. Please pass along any details.

Just went through my closet looking for a Northridge shirt
Alas, it’ll have to be Card wear that carries the Matadors to victory.

found mine next to..
My St.Bonaventure shirt ala 2000. Hopefully this game turns out differently!
even though my bracket will be busted.
Memphis not looking a treat right now.
Louisville and Kentucky are two seperate states. Now Wiki that!

Butler cuts it to 1.
These are easily the best two days of the year.
Memphis is way overrated
They ran up their numbers playing weak sisters. They will make an early exit. I didn’t expect it to come against Northridge, but it sure wouldn’t bother me if it shook out that way.
Even though I have Memphis in the Final Four.
I’ll gladly give up my entire bracket to see them lose today. I wouldn’t even be sad about.
My coin flip bracket had Northridge
If it happens, I might lay down a hefty sum on Morgan State to take it all.

i love it it when the crowd starts getting really into the upset
if evans stays, memphis has the top 3 recruits on rivals coming in with one of the top recruits of this year. they are going to be potentially pretty good, so they deserve to lose today
yeah but did you see them against Tulsa?
oh you didn’t? Well their RPI says they have the best defense….

This won’t be as bad but it’ll hurt.

If I owned a company...
the entire office would have these two days off. No one’s getting anything done. I’d rather work on Thanksgiving.
trying to write a paper,
watch LSU-Butler on TV, and watch CSN-Memphis on the computer. I LOVE MARCH.
Same here.
Sagarin and Pomroy told me BYU was much better, and I just thought LSU was sliding. Damn.
damn 8/9 games
luckily i have them all bowing out in the second round, but it still hurts my ego to mispick them all
I'll be surprised if Memphis gets past the Sweet 16
…and wouldn’t be surprised if they lost to the Cal/MD winner.
I think I feel a bout of March flu coming on
I may be sick tomorrow. I haven’t decided. Let’s see, who’s playing in the early games….
Unfortunaltely
Since Memphis didn’t lose here, the fact that it was close is meaningless. After this, they’ll be more vigilant and probably not vulnerable to a Duke style trap game in the second round. After that, they’ll be up for whatever comes at them, and if they play well, they can compete with most teams. Damn, I wish they had lost.
Calhoun
The latest rumor is that Jim Calhoun may miss more than one game, although UConn hotly denies it.

I’ve thought he looked bad all year, although I wasn’t aware he’d been sick.
just watched the soundtrack video
why does losing to ucla (where were the fouls) still hurt me so bad as a zags fan?
