Selection Sunday open thread

15dfd1c9-6104-4acc-bb0b-a445e49b8d22_medium

So this weekend was OK. Let's go ahead and cap it off with the best Sunday of the calendar year.

I'll still be surprised if Carolina doesn't get the top overall seed, but I can't see the committee taking us out of the Midwest and a possible Dayton/Indianapolis combo. It's not quite as fun to speculate about or breakdown potential first round opponents this year, but I'll just go ahead and say we draw the fighting Todd Bozeman's of Morgan State and that Duke is our two. Even though I'm every bit as skeptical of the Blue Devils' lofty staus as the next guy, I'm not sure they aren't a bad matchup for us, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

As far as the other two top seeds, I think there's little chance that anyone outside of Pitt and Memphis snag them, although I'd be lying if I said I wasn't still holding out a bit of hope that the Tigers are going to pop up as the two in our bracket.

I'm ridiculously excited.

Feel free to share all pre and post-bracket thoughts in the comments section.

Indy

Lunardi thinks we are in Indy, and I’m not convinced he doesn’t have some inside info since he had us in Memphis last night.

Even though Chapel Hill is technically closer to Indy than Memphis, NC and Tennessee actually touch each other, so I don’t think they would be too upset about being in the South. Plus, I mean, UNC is in the South.

I’m thinking we get OK as our 2, with Duke going to Boston against Pitt.

I don’t want to see MSU as our 2 seed.

What a day.

I would have lost that bet.....

…but Pitt is much closer to Boston than Memphis right?

UConn in Boston would have been PERFECT for them.

Memphis and Canada

Did you know Louisville is 12 miles closer to Canada (Windsor, Ontario) than to Memphis. And given Memphis fans that’s a good thing!

This is SO Cool!

For the first time since I’ve been a true Card fan I can stop watching the Selection show after the first 5 minutessince they always announce the 1 seeds first. No that I will stop watching, mind you, but it’s neat to be able to relax and just enjoy the moment.

My prediction is that the Cards will get the overall 1 seed and be placed in the Dayton/Indy Brackets. The NCAA has been pretty good about trying to keep the top teams as close to home as possible.

Regardless, I’m really stoked to watch the Selection Show.

by JustCards on Mar 15, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

I'm guessing

They give UNC the overall 1, but put them in memphis.
uofl in Indy.
Put memphis out west with uconn.
pitt in boston. hopefully with duke.

In my fantasy world they send UNC to boston with UConn.
Us to Indy with Oklahoma.
Duke & memphis out west
Pitt & MSU in memphis.

Brown Chairs

What do you think those brown chairs at Michigan are normally used for?

by Quinn1979 on Mar 15, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Overnight...

….amazing how the sports media seemed to switch on UL from “outside shot at 1 but lost to WKU” to “clearly a 1 seed and likely the overall #1”

I think for so long they have their minds made up and then when they realize what is going to happen they switch and act like they’ve been there all along.

by CardsFan922 on Mar 15, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

The path...

…Quinn1979 were just discussing how crazy it is where we are right now, and how the exact circumstances that had to happen for us to get the 1 seed in (possibly) Indy…happened. There is almost no other scenario where we end up like this…..even if we beat UConn/Pitt in the Big East final we get the 4th 1 seed out west…..if we are the 2 or 3 seed in the BET we likely don’t get a 1 seed….

Just amazing. The path is unfolding before us.

Crap, I hate having to play UConn.

Even without Dyson, I think they are a bad match up for us.

by 83fan on Mar 15, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

Doesn't change things....

…if they put Memphis out west as the 2, then UConn/Memphis were the last ones, so we would play the winner anyway.

by CardsFan922 on Mar 15, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

True.

I just don’t like our match up with them. I’d rather play Pitt, or even UNC at this point.

Hopefully, the Dyson loss will make a big difference, and Pitino now has a game tape to work with.

No one has played against a defense like ours!

Only Mich. St has me concerned. But even then they don’t have the guards to handle our press.

Don't think we'll face Ohio State

I’m calling it now… Siena will be the Buckeyes. They’re good, guys. Very solid team. And don’t sweat Mich. St. They’re physical, but we’ll run them into the ground. They remind me of Pitt with less beef inside.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

Siena is a better team than OSU.

However, OSU has been playing really well lately, and has had success by forcing a faster tempo against the Big Ten and using a 2-3 zone. Those are the kind of teams we have trouble against, so I hope we get Siena.

by CARD_G6 on Mar 15, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points

but we consistently beat the ‘Cuse zone in the 2nd Half. I think we’ve got that one solved. And we’re so much faster than OSU. I’m not worried one bit until the 3rd Round.

I think Providence

deserves a bid before a Big Ten team that didn’t finish .500. No question.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 6:35 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

they deserve it… but I was sure it would be a 4.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe overconfident here

but I honestly don’t see us breaking a sweat until Sweet Sixteen. I like the matchup with OSU, even though it’s in Dayton. We’ll travel well up that short distance, so I don’t think they’ll have a huge crowd advantage.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Man I hope

Pitino keeps these guys grounded. It would be so easy to let overall #1 (still that hasn’t sunk in yet) go to their heads and get upset early.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

I almost hate that Miss State won that game.

I hate Tenn, but I really think they stole a bid from St Mary’s or Providence, which were more deserving teams IMO.

to Wake Forest…what an assface

Go Cards!

by Red Rage on Mar 15, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

LOL

That’s insane. Wake is one of the easiest matchups we could hope for. Those guys probably rank at the bottom of all BCS teams in terms of shooting 3’s. We can collapse in the halfcourt and absolutely stifle those guys. I HOPE we get Wake!

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Stats

Compare 3’s… Louisville took 608 and made 201. Wake took 381 and made 121. Similar percentages, but look at that huge gap! Louisville took the most 3’s in the BE. Wake took the least in the ACC (by far). PLEASE LET US PLAY WAKE!

by CardsFanTX on Mar 15, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Good stats TX

But I said a month ago that I hoped we didn’t face Wake due to their height. 5+ players 6-10 or taller I think. Couple seven footers. Here’s hoping our beating from UConn doesn’t mean we can’t handle tall teams.

by 97E3LPL on Mar 16, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh I know

Wake’s tall… they have to be since they don’t shoot the rock well from outside. But UConn owned us because we had to respect their outside abilities with Dyson playing. He was their best outside player on both ends of the court. He was the reason Thabeet was able to get the ball basically at will inside. But two things are clear vs. Wake: we have fouls to give inside (platoon TJ and SS and get them both to front aggressively); and Wake’s Guards are horribly mismatched in the halfcourt vs. Dre, PK, and Smith. Your big men aren’t nearly as effective if the outside guys can’t get looks into them. Seriously, we’ll abuse Wake. I just saw that Parrish over at CBSSports.com picked Wake to win our Region. LOL What a tool.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 16, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Congratulations to all on the overall #1

But the truth is the committee, once again, didn’t do us any favors. Playing Ohio State in Dayton will be a tall order, regardless of the apparent weakness of this year’s Big Ten. And there is no doubt what so ever that the Midwest region is the toughest of all. Gee whiz, I thought getting the number one overall meant a break and getting the weakest number 2. Perhaps that truly is Michigan State, but I have my doubts.

theoldman

by theoldman on Mar 16, 2009 10:09 AM EDT reply actions

Not worried about OSU

because I think there’s a real chance that Siena will take them out in Rd 1. But either way, we’ll travel well and have a sizeable crowd in Dayton to offset OSU’s “home” feel. Plus, we played better on the road this year than at the Hall, anyway. But yeah, this is a tough draw overall for what should have been the easiest bracket.

by CardsFanTX on Mar 16, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

March Madness!!!!

A lot of people are saying that the Midwest is the toughest bracket, I completely disagree. We are with, hands down, the weakest #2 seed in the tournament. Would you rather have the option of playing Oklahoma? Memphis? Duke? No, you would not…Michigan State has a lot of flaws; I was in Indy for the Big 10 tournament, and the only team that really impressed me was Purdue (and obviously they won). Ohio State can make big shots, but they give up a lot on defense, and their guards can’t handle a lot of pressure.

After that, Wake Forest and Kansas are the toughest teams in our bracket. Kansas is too young, too inexperienced, and I think we would matchup well with them. Wake Forest could pose some problems; but again, what have they done since January?…West Virginia is probably the team that worries me the most, but I don’t see HuggyBear coaching that team to the Elite Eight.

After saying all of that, I am still worried. I have never felt this confident in a team…In fact, the last time I was anywhere close to this confident was right before the UCONN game, and we all know how that ended.

by Luke Whitehead's Rap Career on Mar 16, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

Long as the boys dont revert back

to being scared of inside contact, ie: UConn game..we will be fine. Never in my life had I seen a team so scared to go inside and risk getting their shot blocked..lol
