Open Thread: Big East Tournament evening session
The Johnnies drained whatever strength I might have had for an evening live blog, so let's tackle this thing together.
Thoughts on WVU/Notre Dame, Syracuse/Seton Hall or any of tonight's other action should be shared below.
Go...higher seeds?

Odds that?
Ebanks and Jones shoot a combined 12-14 on “midrange jumpers” tonight?
Also, Bilas has done more analysis of the game he is currently watching already than Vitale did THE ENTIRE GAME Saturday.
raftery and bilas should announce together for the dance
why the hell not cbs? wow dancing freddy kruger was odd to see. notre dame looks flat
NEC Champ at 8, I believe
The Big 12, A-10 and C-USA are playing, but not on any of the main networks.

You have to think they'll make at least a mini run
But this is ugly.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions
This just isn't Notre Dame's night.
Missed layups, no rebounds, losing balls out of bounds.
Feels a lot like us @ Notre Dame.
Mike loved the live blog today...
Seriously, you are a talented guy and I am obviously a huge fan of Card Chronicle. I think you could be the next Bill Simmons, just don’t forget us little guys from the Ville when you get famous.
Thanks, man
Somehow I don’t see it happening.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
well, Simmons wouldn't fall asleep...
..even during the 2nd round of the NBA draft…gotta work on that.
...although I admit to nodding off a bit in my cube..
and I was only watching the score tracker on ESPN.com.
see i hate that commercial
let’s just guess they are fans of the home team. the dude is going for a break away dunk to win the game, and yet, they want over time. then in overtime, the team passes for no reason as tinme is running out causing someone to get a ball shot. and on top of that, why are they all so carefree about the game? if they don’t give a shit who wins, why request overtime? there has to be someone at that b-dubs who was rooting for the home team to win and was excited for the break away and probably killed them self when everyone else wanted overtime. well this was a harsh overreaction. this game sucks by the way.
Bilas impersonation?
That was a heck of a breakdown of a BW3’s commercial Scott. And while we are at it, what about that players mother, I bet she was excited to see her son break free for a game winning shot only to be possibly handicapped for the rest of his life thanks to a bunch of drunks at a BW3’s wanting to hang out a little bit longer… FOR SHAME BW3’s!
I love this site.
That’s a wonderful reaction. Yes, if I was in that situation as a card fan, I would murder everyone in the bar. There’s been a few games this year I feel like we’ve been battling a BW’s somewhere in the country with the overtime capability (see: @ Nova).

Does anyone else think
that Harongody looks absolutely uninspired? It’s like he’s waiting for this to be over, has other plans or something.

I hear that there is all you can eat pancakes
at IHOP tonight…maybe?
by twistedwedge on Mar 11, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Doubtful.
They’ll probably have a commentary on how far Notre Dame and Georgetown have fallen and how Pitt and UConn will probably duke it out in the championship game with Pitt coming out on top.
you get anything?
couldnt get the wife to leave it on espn..

ND Cuts the Lead to a Manageable 18 @ the Half
C’mon Syracuse/Seton Hall – give us one exciting game today.
scores were similar as well
UL/ND halftime score 37-19
WV/ND halftime score 36-18
keep your foot on that pedal WV!!!
Nice catch
I’d love to see WVU blowout ND, but I’d also like to see at least one exciting game today (hence the sarcasm and plea in the original comment). The UofL players watching at MSG must have a serious case of cognitive dissonance brewing right now.

This makes our win at W.Va look even more wonderful.
West Virginia is playing the best defense I’ve seen this year played by anyone other than the Cards. ’Course N.D. is helping them a great deal, but still, the Mountaineers are smothering the ball.
theoldman
wvu is getting scary...
and all those freshmen next yr maturing… will make our games with them veryinteresting
Two shampoos?
It’s workin’…ah, they got me….it’s workin’.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions
Jerb, i understand you won't be needing any more shampoo soon
you’ll have to fill me in more tomorrow
I LOVE that commercial...
…it is so out of nowhere, too. Who knew hotels.com had that in them. Can you imagine the pitch for that ad?
I was just going to nominate it for early 1-seed in the NCAA commercial tourney bracket (Quinn1979 has a google spreadsheet doc ready to go) but I don’t know if it will be eligible since it has been running for a few weeks.
Me three
Not to be that guy but I too love that commercial. The look he gives/sound he makes at the end makes the spot. You can tell as soon as they said cut he was doubled over laughing.
Was the first half some kind of
warp in the space/time continuium? Am I watching the same two teams?
theoldman
I have to say...
…when posters spend more time discussing commercials rather than the game, it speaks volumes about the competitive quality of the game.
Haven't seen a lot of fouls down low tonight...
….which means there is NO WAY we beat Pitt or UConn if they aren’t calling fouls down low.
Air Force beat Colorado State
Meaning teams that went winless in their conference during the regular season are now 2-1 in conference tournaments.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions
They just showed 4 seconds of UofL getting the trophy!
Jerb – can you turn that into a 4:00 minute youtube video with cool music?
Stupid ESPN – seriously, show the whole thing. Just two seconds looked awesome.
I stopped capturing it after hafltime...
oh well, I assume they will show it during our game tomorrow.
WVU better not lose this game.
It’ll screw up my pool. And, I hate Notre Dame.
A timeout might be nice here.
I'm not sure..
they are going to show it in a conference room at work, but I am still thinking that BW3’s is where I’d rather watch it.
T-Will on getting the Big East championship trophy...
“It’s not that heavy,” Williams said. “I could carry it around for awhile.”

I don't like this Syracuse team
But I really don’t like this Seton Hall team, and I really, really don’t like this Seton Hall coach.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 9:00 PM EDT reply actions
To be perfectly honest though...
I’d have to say I have more of a problem with Devendork than I do with Gonzo.
T-Will can do it in a number of places
That’s what she said.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions
For a second..
…Huggins kinda had that “OMG how drunk was I when I looked at the bracket we have to play Louisville?!?!” look on his face for a couple of seconds.
Sideline guy is still rusty from those bigeast.tv games.
Higgins reffing this game....
….Bobby G is involved…Cuse sorta is annoying….Seton Hall doesn’t play defense and is generally punkish….and the first foul was called 13 seconds in.
What’s not to love?
Seton Hall's jerseys
Could be a lot cooler.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions
I was just thinking...
Syracuse look like they got their outfits at Abercrombie and Fitch… Seton Hall looks like they got theirs at Value City.
Sticks Mitchell playing over his head
I’ve been forced to go mute here so I’m missing anything gold that comes from the Raftery/McDonough/Bilas trio.

Hazell v. Devendorf
Which player do I dislike more? Probably Hazell because he actually beat us and he’s still going to be around next year.
Bobby
Stop looking at the camera and start looking at the interviewer.
The man is insane.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions
If you are still on mute
you just missed Jay Williams saying that Providence needed to stop Terrence Jennings because he is so good passing the ball and rebounding. Come on, he has the same last name as you, Jay.
Missed it
But was informed via text.
It’s OK, Digger Phelps thinks Providence needs to stop Eric Johnson because of his ball-handling.

"Gonzo's worth the price of admission over there"
Rafferty has never been so wrong.
Devendorf hits a big three, and....
a Syracuse fan in the crowd picks his nose.

Arizne Onuaku
Wants to know how T-Will got so good at free-throws.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 10:44 PM EDT reply actions
Basically all 3 are just slamming the players for getting chippy.
Rafferty: “Come on, guys. Grow up.”

The Pirates have found themselves
in the middle of too many situations like this over the last two years for it to be anywhere near a coincidence.

Of course this year's group of
Orangemen aren’t exactly choir boys.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions
true
you saw how quick beat-a-girl (aka Devendorf)got involved
by twistedwedge on Mar 11, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Devendork drags their rep even lower.
Take him out of the equation, and I’d say they’re about average.
I have to say, that as hard as Walters swung on that last foul
he looked like he got all ball. No way you get away with it.
Please note
That Harvey didn’t go particularly hard at Onuaku or Flynn, but the moment he saw Devendorf he went right for the face.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 10:52 PM EDT reply actions
Oh totally
I’m just saying that Eugene Harvey isn’t tougher than I am – I’m not tough – so he shouldn’t act like he is.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Its because he knows Devendork
can only beat up a girl..lol
by twistedwedge on Mar 11, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions
whats the over-under
on minutes till the next incident
Over.
To be honest, I’m not too sure something else will actually happen. You don’t really tend to get one more of these things per game.
I agree
Especially if Seton Hall can’t get back into the game. To fight or talk when you’re down 10 won’t happen, you’d obviously just be the sorest of losers.
remember who we're talking about here
jersey boys
To be honest, I'd almost rather Hazell or Garcia get ejected.
But seeing them all three leave wouldn’t break my heart.
I hate Johnny Flynn.
He’s way too wild and flashy. He also pulls more “Bad Edgar” moves than Bad Edgar, and hangs his head whenever he gets beat on defense, which is often.
I was thinking the exact same thing
he thinks that this is the nba most of the time
by twistedwedge on Mar 11, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
So Devendorf proves once again that he still has no class.
I really can’t wait for this man to graduate and start his career in unemployment.
Okay, I am officially cheering for UConn tomorrow.
I didn’t think it was possible.
I did like the Rafferty comparison of Devendorf to the Rocketts.
I almost wish they would start fighting again.
I’ve been so bored with the game that I seriously watched Higgins run around hiking up his pants the entire last possession.
Game plan for beating Syracuse
Don’t start fights.

I want to go to sleep
But if I miss Eric Devendorf getting punched in the face I’ll never forgive myself.
The amount of people who have come to this site in the last half an hour
by googling something about Eric Devendorf is outrageous.

The Seton Hall formula for defeat
holds true once more.
by Mike Rutherford on Mar 11, 2009 11:21 PM EDT reply actions
did the commentators say anything about whether a 24 point lead with less than 3 minutes to go is a safe time to take the starters out?
Website is epic.
My favorite quote:
“Eric, Keep up the good work! Your biggest fan, Ike Turner”
I laughed pretty hard at that.
also
how do syracuse people sleep at night cheering for devendorf? i want to know this. if he played for us i would openly hate him, no matter what he did on the court.
You wouldn't have to worry about that.
Pitino would have kicked his ass off campus and given his scholarship to Lee Steiden 6 months ago.
All right
I’m gonna catch a bit of the Big Sky title game (why not) and then hit it.
I’ll see you all in the morning.

You Are There
I liked the “Edward R Murrow Reporting” from yesterday, the solo stuff.
The back and forth with the crew was good, too.
Syracuse’s program has been more than sprinkled with thugery. I won’t name names or I’ll be here till game time. Devendorf really is easy to dislike. It will be interesting when the Orange play their next opponent. The previous games of the day were so still born, as to have very little interest at all.
OK, Mike should get his wake up call soon. Red Bulls all around, and even though I’m alone, coffee for six.
I’m concerned we’ll come up flat today, overripe after last weekends fruitful harvest. Hope I’m wrong
Have a great day, everybody.
