What to watch: 2/26/09

Huggins2_medium

West Virginia at Cincinnati (7 p.m./ESPN)

Huggins coaches which team? Make sure you let us know early and often, ESPN.

Xavier at St. Joseph's (7 p.m./ESPN2)

Joe Lunardi thinks this game is huge for the Hawks' shot at a three seed.

Minnesota at Illinois (7 p.m./Big Ten Network)

'Tis a biggun for Tubby's tundra ballers.

Miami (Fla.) at Virginia (8 p.m./Raycom)

Is Miami the biggest disappointment of the season? Maybe.

I'm available for hire, America.

NC State at Wake Forest (8 p.m./Raycom)

A big run starting tonight and the Pack will be able to play themselves right onto the bubble.

Florida Atlantic at Western Kentucky (8 p.m./FCS Atlantic)

Boy that Courtney Greene was something else, huh.

Purdue at Michigan (9 p.m./ESPN)

I feel like the late ESPN game on Thursday night always sucks.

Memphis at UAB (9 p.m./ESPN2)

Here's a better option.

Morehead State at Murray State (9 p.m./ESPNU)

Kentucky!

Arizona at Washington State (9 p.m./FSN)

'Zona needs it to help ensure their NCAA Tourney streak is safe.

UCLA at Stanford (10:30 p.m./FCS Pacific)

If Howland takes this team to the Final Four then he really might be the best coach in the game, title or no title.

Gonzaga at Santa Clara (11 p.m./ESPN2)

When Patty Mills went down the WCC decided to go vintage and have nobody challenge Gonzaga.

Arizona State at Washington (11 p.m./FSN)

Didn't we already have these two playing at 9? The West Coast is silly.

Did anyone else hear

when Bob Knight said Huggy Bear looked like 300 pounds of butter walking down the court when mentioning above “electric mustard” yellow suit.

Local Color

The school down the road, Binghamton University, clinched the America East regular season title tonight and head up to Albany for the tournament next weekend.
A lot of downstate kids come up here to BU for an ivy league education on the cheap. It’s probably a fall-back school for those who can’t get in or can’t afford Cornel, Dartmouth, etc. It is annually listed on the “Best Value For Public Colleges” lists and its public relations department will constantly remind you of that accolade.

The coach is a JT3 Georgetown disciple and he is in his second year here. There was an article in last weeks NY Times about the school and some of the less than good vibes emanating from the Athletic Department and the basketball circle in particular. Several profs have intimated that the Athletic Dept has tried to strong arm them into changing some of the players grades. I have heard some of the guys speak on TV, and although articulation can never be pure correlation for intelligence, rest assured that the guys I heard were not Wil Scott’s final competition for that Rhodes Scholar gig.

Finally, last year, in a downtown college bar, after an argument, a 6’10" center from Croatia stomped a fellow student in the head into submission. The kid was in a coma for 22 weeks and the foreign guy, initially arrested and on bail, somehow evaded Customs (slow red tape) and somehow got back to his homeland, where the local MoFo’s have resisted extradition and have offered the family of the stricken kid $60,000, which, they must suppose, will take foot the bill of his lifetime care.

I Almost Forgot

The nickname for Binghamton University is “Bearcats,” though no one around here has ever seen, nor heard mention of such an animal. It is a name of such blandness and so non symbolic that I may start a petition to change the athletic teams nickname to: The Binghamton University “Generics”.

Previously BU had a perfectly fine nickname, a name I even kinda liked…“The Colonials.”
But I guess somebody was affended by that and it had to be dumbed down to the current moniker.
So we have to deny our heritage, deny that we came to this country and did things that maybe we shouldn’t be so proud of, and deny that we did it all for a better life.

Somebody says it was all wrong so we wind up having to name our sports team after some non existent animal who might live in a non existent cave, or hide in some non existent tree in the non existent Catskills.

Anybody else frustrated at all? Anybody else starting to feel like “Travis,” the Robert Dinero character in “Taxi Driver?” Anybody else angry?
OK, I guess it’s just me.

Bearcats do exist

Ugly little animal, if you ask me. (link pops)

I miss the old days of the internet when men were men, hot girls were middle aged men, and hot uderage girls were FBI agents.....

Yeah, I already looked.

But they don’t exist in upstate New York.

And they ARE ugly.
