Sports! A Championship Saturday / College Basketball Open Thread

It's that time of year again.  The closest we'll get to a playoff happens today, with conference championship games being played across the country.  UK v. UNC basketball at 12:30. And to top it all off, a UofL Saturday night basketball game at Freedom Hall.

Fun day for sports.  Everyone feel free to stop by and weigh in.  Tebow could care less about your opinion.

…not because I don’t want Strong, but because “done deal” usually means that person has already turned down the job.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

I'm going to start off watching UC at Pitt

But then will probably flip back and forth with the UK game. I can’t help and watch, because I think they are going to get exposed and look bad. One can hope anyways.

by CardinalDude on Dec 5, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions

Gotta cheer for Cinci

A Cinci win, a Texas loss, a jump over TCU in the polls, and Cincinnati could be playing for the Nat. Championship (where they would probably get worked). It could happen and it would be huge for the big east.

by Centre24 on Dec 5, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

That would be awesome

But I just don’t think the human polls are going to let UC jump over TCU. UC needs to blow Pitt out of the water for any chance of that.

by CardinalDude on Dec 5, 2009 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

True

Their chances would have been better of jumping TCU if Oregon State had won the Pac-10 and Pitt hadn’t lost to WV

by Centre24 on Dec 5, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I hope Bama intercepts Tebow 12 times

and anyone heard the rumor that LeBron is gonna be at the UK game? barf

by sam34gtr on Dec 5, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions

UK shooting...

…like 85%? Helps that its dunks and layups…

Wall is really good. Patterson as well.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 12:59 PM EST reply actions

UNC

Looks like a HS team.

This is crazy.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:04 PM EST reply actions

You can't let UK run

Wall is a one man fast break. Gotta make them get into a half court and shoot threes

by Centre24 on Dec 5, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions

Roy Williams..

…luckily has all of his time outs left.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions

I hate to be the Debby Downer in here

but UK cannot handle this team at Rupp if we don’t improve vastly

by sam34gtr on Dec 5, 2009 1:06 PM EST reply actions

Zone defense...

…and some semblance of an offense will help.

But with the way we’ve played so far + injuries + Samardo’s nonsense I’m downgrading my already-reasonable expectations for this team this season.

On the bright side, Wall will be gone next year and Calipari will inevitably disappoint UK fans by not winning the championship.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

I really wanna see UK play Kansas

also, you know Jim Calhoun isn’t moving from this film until he has a great gameplan, maybe they’ll bring the UK fans down to earth

by sam34gtr on Dec 5, 2009 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

Cincy playing scared right now.

I think Pitt is going to win if they keep the Cincy D on the field this much..

WOW flea flicker!

by Remote Cardinal on Dec 5, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Pitt

Destroying Cinci. I wonder if word will leak at halftime about Kelly to ND.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Brickley..

…I think he’s f’ing with Charlotte because he keeps tweeting them as “UNC-Charlotte”: http://twitter.com/Cbrickley11

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions

Who was the guy with the head band for Charlotte who was so good?

Competed with Garcia for C-USA MVP (and I think won it) in ’05.

by Mike Rutherford on Dec 5, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Announcer right.

..two straight 15-yard penalties on Pitt were just missed.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:43 PM EST reply actions

PERFECT timing..

…literally 2nd half of bball starts when Pitt/Cinci halftime starts.

Good day.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:44 PM EST reply actions

yeah, that was nice, but

they have both went to commercial at the same time 3 times earlier.

by Remote Cardinal on Dec 5, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Cousins...

…better tackle than Micah Johnson on that play!

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions

Bad entry passes...

..and clanked open shots. Not a good way to get back into the game.

Mike is right – if Henson youtubes Orton there and gets an and-1….pretty big swing from that to block + patterson dunk.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:05 PM EST reply actions

Why does UK make their jersey tops so fucking tight

and their shorts so long and baggy… fashion faux pas

by Centre24 on Dec 5, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

NCAA needs to limit length of shorts like the NBA

They look absolutely ridiculous. Seems it would inhibit your speed and dribbling ability.

by centrecard on Dec 5, 2009 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Wall is not playing Defense at all.

wonder when that is really going to burn UK?

by Remote Cardinal on Dec 5, 2009 2:22 PM EST reply actions

UNC..

…they are playing horrible it feels like, and keep blowing opportunities. Somehow down to 6 points.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:22 PM EST reply actions

One Score game in both

Cincy – Pitt
and
UNC – UK

What a saturday

by Remote Cardinal on Dec 5, 2009 2:25 PM EST reply actions

UNC...

..missed opportunities every time down the court!

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:27 PM EST reply actions

Two bricked open threes for UK

This is reminding me of UL @ UNLV a bit here down the stretch.

by Remote Cardinal on Dec 5, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Ya those were huge...

….Dodson and Miller wide open aren’t going to both miss too many times down the court.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Wall..

…strips it from Ed Davis without fouling somehow, steps out of bounds, sprints down the court and trips and gets the foul called.

I hate to count UNC out but it seems like their window is fast closing.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:33 PM EST reply actions

This officiating sucks.

That wasn’t even close to out of bounds. This is seriously about as lopsided of officiating I’ve seen in a while.

by CARD_G6 on Dec 5, 2009 2:41 PM EST reply actions

Game over

…what a great game. UK looked pretty damn unstoppable in the first half, and UNC made lots of mistakes in the second half.

Can’t wait for UK-UConn.

Okay, back to Cinci-Pitt until the Main Event.

Sports!

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:48 PM EST reply actions

Between this and Twitter...

…how do you really feel about the Cinci QB situation?

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously

I know he’s a senior but at what point does securing an undefeated season take precedence?

by Mike Rutherford on Dec 5, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

The system lifts a lot of weight for them..

That said, I wouldn’t complain if Collaros was our QB.

by bartenpa on Dec 5, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Well that was easy

Come on, UC. Do it for everybody in the Big East who doesn’t cheer for Pitt.

by Mike Rutherford on Dec 5, 2009 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Put in Collaros at QB...

…and Pike for the hold, apparently.

Collaros’s hands probably cold from sitting on sideline.

As soon as the announcer said “big extra point” it almost was destined to be a shank.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I know

Everyone had to have thought the same thing right after he said it. It was eerie.

by Mike Rutherford on Dec 5, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Oh wow.

Um… Big East refs need to stop acting like SEC refs… I want Cincy to win and all, but that was just bad.

by CARD_G6 on Dec 5, 2009 3:22 PM EST reply actions

WOWOWOW

Okay, safe to say this is a big extra point.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 3:32 PM EST reply actions

Brian Kelly is a fucking offensive genius.

He laughs at Kragthorpe’s “BCS offer.”

by CARD_G6 on Dec 5, 2009 3:33 PM EST reply actions

Long ball

….with two timeouts, do you think a couple long ball jump balls is a better strategy than over-the-middle 12 yard routes?

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 3:36 PM EST reply actions

I meant...

…when they got the ball back with 30 seconds to go.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Oh.

Yeah, probably not.

by CARD_G6 on Dec 5, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Gilyard Wins Big East!

Cincinnati goes along for the ride.

Also, you have to feel for that holder. Wow.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 3:39 PM EST reply actions

CBS announcers are retarded.

If Toby Gerhart isn’t in the lead for the Heisman at this point, something’s wrong.

by CARD_G6 on Dec 5, 2009 3:42 PM EST reply actions

Okay...

…everyone has 20 minutes to take a quick break, watch your favorite 2006 college football highlights (I’ll be watching Mario’s stiff-arm again and again and again and again) and then meet back here for UF-Bama.

by CardsFan922 on Dec 5, 2009 3:42 PM EST reply actions

This is a sports marathon

Make sure you stay hydrated guys.

by bartenpa on Dec 5, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

That would make my year.

Rules for Tebow drinking game:
♦ Drink every time Tebow is called "a warrior."
♦ Drink every time Tebow’s called "a leader," then salute.
♦ Drink every time Tebow’s called a special athlete"
♦ Finish your drink if the announcers suggest Tebow should win the Heisman again this year.
♦ Drink every time Tebow points to the sky. Then realize the only reason the sky hasn’t fallen is the strength of his pointing.
♦ Drink every time he’s shown on the sidelines flapping his arms like a bird (or an idiot) to pump up the crowd.
♦ Drink every time Tebow’s on camera for no reason when the Florida defense is on the field.
♦ Drink every time Tebow is seen screaming with his helmet off.
♦ Drink every time they show a "I Heart Tebow" sign in the stands.
♦ Drink every time you see a Florida fan in "jorts" [jean shorts]. (Small sips on this one. Otherwise it could kill you).
♦ Shot every time they mention his experience as missionary.
♦ If they mention him performing circumcisions in the Philippines while he was a missionary: Chug your beer, do a shot of Patron.

Wow

I would definitely conduct that test under medical supervision.

by bartenpa on Dec 5, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

that's pretty funny

the shots of Tebow will Florida is on defense would get you drunk by itself

ESPNU

I would love to watch UofL Charlotte, but I can’t afford ESPNU package and I have a little one so I have to stay home. Anyone have an online source where I can start watching games?

by Thales on Dec 5, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

yes indeed

http://www.justin.tv/cbb2k8 is usually a reliable source for all things cards.

by bartenpa on Dec 5, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

Really appreciate it, thank you!

by Thales on Dec 5, 2009 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

So, this is my first time watching a full Florida football game

and I understand that Alabama is very good. That being said, I’m not being blown away by their defense.

I’d still gladly take Strong.

by Dais on Dec 5, 2009 6:28 PM EST reply actions

Welp...

….What a great/awful day of sport.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
