Anyone listen to the post game coverage with RP?

What is up with our fans leaving early all the time? I mean its like there is a fire in the building at the 7 min mark every game, it is really really pitiful. Coach RP pretty much called out the Louisville fan base saying they needed to be more into the game all the time, and not just when the players make big plays. He also said UK starts an hour before the game and gives it to the opposing team the entire time, not just when big plays happen. Why is our fan base so terrible with this (I’m sure no one on here does this, but I’m just saying in general)?

cause they MUST get to their cars

I mean, come on- Id much rather sit in my car and wait to get out than watch the end of the game! /sarcasm

Seriously though-Ive been attending Louisville games since moving here in ’93 and have never understood the whole leaving at the 8-7 minute mark. I can honestly say that each game attended Ive stayed till the final horn. To me its a great privilege and honor just to be there…and this is the final season at FH to boot. Come on people!!

I think the short answer is this:

Louisville fans have a but more perspective than other fans, in general. It’s not a matter of disrespect or anything; it’s just that the game is decided and there are other things to do, and most probably think that there’s no point in hanging aroud just to berate the other fans and players.

I really don’t think people leave due to a lack of interest in the team, but they’re not completely consumed by the sport. It’s not like they do this in the big games. The fan base is overall very smart. The end of the Crum era and the beginning if the Pitino era have shown that the fans are interested enough in competitive games to get excited, even when the stakes aren’t that high. But when the game isn’t competitive, especially on our end, they’re not interested in sitting around throwing insults and mocking opposing teams and fans, unlike other fanbases.

What I’m always more upset about is the football fans. They are the epitome of fair weather fans, and it gets embarassing to be honest.

I would hardly say the only reason people stay around ‘til the end is to berate the other team’s players and fans. But how do you make that argument (when the game isn’t competitive, especially on our end, they’re not interested in sitting around) and then say you’re upset at football fans? Most fans who don’t show up would say it’s because the game isn’t competitive, especially on our end. At the very least the football fans can say they have to deal with weather.

I dont agree with

sticking around just to mock opposing teams/fans. The only time I do that is when the mildkitties are in town. I enjoy staying til the end b/c a lot of the time you get to see the little guys play-and also some cool dunks, plays etc.

Football is a whole other animal. Hopefully with the addition of CCS the fans will quit being so fickle and stay entire games.

Because I've seen football fans leave at halftime in a close game.

I’ve seen them leave at the start of the fourth quarter in a tie ball game. How about the Arkansas State game? People were filing out despite the fact that it was, what, an 8 point game?

I’ve never really seen basketball get that bad. And I didn’t mean to insinuate that fans only stick around in uncontested games to berate fans (though it may have come out that way inadvertently), only that in games like USF (where we’ve won 10 straight) with a 20 point lead with 8 minutes left, what other reason is there to stay? For me, I would stay just to see the plays, and I’m not saying it’s a good thing, I’m just saying that’s probably how a lot of fans feel.

Agree regarding the fanbase sentiments

I only attend one home game a year these days and Freedom Hall’s been a lot tamer the past 10 years than I remember back in the 80s and 90s—maybe it’s the smoking ban?

There is that palpable feeling…like everyone’s judging the louder fans instead of enjoying the atmosphere for what it once was and what it’s meant to be. The worst is when the “down in front!” lady leaves at the 7 minute mark. Freedom Hall deserves better, especially this season.

its because the majority of the fan base on the 1st level is older people that need to get home before their bedtime…its ridiculous..with 3:00 left in the game, freedom hall looked like it does at women’s games

totally agree with this and all the above comments

i wish all the asshats that leave when the outcome’s been decided would give up their tix to people that actually want to watch. when the exodus starts at the under 8, i always start mouthing off to people: “why not just check the score on espn.com and not bother coming?”

I went to games at Freedom Hall in the late 70's and the 80's.

I was always amazed at how passive the lower sections were. The Student Section was loud and boisterous, but were at the end of the court and up several sections. I was using my father-in-laws seats which he had for many years. All around were a lot of older folks who made very little noise except when a big play occurred. I remember them all looking at this 20-something kid yelling at the refs, the other team, Coach Crum, and otherwise making as much noise as possible. In fact my wife even said something to me before a game to not be loud and obnoxious. I remember leaving that game very horse. Seems as if that is how Freedom Hall crowds were and will be.

Hopefully with the new arena, the fan distribution will be different and the nosie level will rise.

On the leave early part, keep in mind that Louisville fans are City fans. They usually don’t have far to go to get home, Kentucky fans, on the other hand, usually come from outside Lexington and have a nice drive home. So why leave the cozy confines of Rupp Arena when you can stay and wait until the highways are clear and then listen to the post-game show on your way home.

Glad my video made it on here anyway...

I was planning on posting but then my kid had a blowout diaper that wiped my memory. I think I’ll keep an archive of all Kuric’s dunks and make a video montage someday.

People don't show up until 2 minuntes before game time either

It has become a NBA crowd that is only making noise when there is a big play or music going. The band gets drowned out constantly in favor of piped in music or commercial stuff that they have to do every time out. Nothing is generated by the fans anymore. For me, it has a lot to do with the commercials and constant t-shirt throwing that gets on my nerves. I don’t think people want to get beat over the head with it and it gets old.

The student section is always shrinking and I bet there will be an even smaller one in the new arena. It will be mostly corporate boxes and suites with open seating that has a wait staff that will bring you drinks so you can sit comfortably and not get up and cheer.

The Student section has too many older people in it.

I sit next to a guy who has to be at least 60. Now, this might be a fault of the student just giving their tickets to relatives and such, but yes, the student section at UofL is crappy. I expect the school to give students a crappy location in the new arena.
