Sources tell FootballCoachScoop that Athletic Director Tom Jurich has narrowed his search down to Phillip Fulmer (Former Tennessee Head Coach),
Charlie Strong (Florida Defensive Coordinator) and Butch Jones (Central Michigan Head Coach).

I don't know a whole lot about Jones, but he doesn't seem high profile enough to bring in big recruiting classes right away. I'd put Strong on the top of my list and only use Fulmer as a backup option...

Here's the thing about getting a "top flight" recruiting class
We never have had one, and we’ve been successful with out them. Petrino here, Kelly at UC, and to a lesser degree JLS here didn’t bring in the best looking classes on paper, but all the kids developed into stars. Even Petrino’s best classes were mid 20’s.
So I guess I’m saying if Jones is actually a good coach, and can convince a kid to run through a brick wall (which IMO is what coaches like Petrino and Pitino have, and Krag never had), the rest will take care of itself.
I’ll be fine with Strong or Jones. I just don’t get excited about Fulmer. He had some great years at Tenn, but he finished with a thud.
If you remove
the recruits at the signing date who never played a down for the University, then we’ve never had a signing class in the top 50, or something in that area. It’s been hashed out on Insidetheville so many times it’s ridiculous. I think the point they make every time is a coach is either a winner or a loser, and the difference in talent is marginal compared to the difference a coach makes.
Yep
At the college level, coaching is huge. At the pro level, talent wins out much more often. Just like most major sports. I understand why pro coaches earn more, but logically it’s bass ackwards.
I assumed that TJ...
was going to get super creative for this new hire, a la Pitino. I expected to hear something crazy like “Tom Jurich requested permission to speak with Pete Carroll today”…I’m actually suprised to hear names like Butch Jones or Sumlin on his list – even if they are good up n’ comers.
Big big Difference between UL bball and UL football my man
In one we’re a destination job and in one we’re not. You need look no further than fan mentality to explain it (and not this is not a comment about all fans)
In the late 90’s when Crum’s run was bottoming out big time and we were completely off the national scene, the hall was still full, people still cheered, and the electricity was there, even if the product on the court didn’t reflect the fire in the stands.
In football, if we’re really good, people will travel to bowls, we’ll have good showing at road games (the middle Tenn St. game and Cinnci road trips come to mind), and papa johns will be mostly to completely full depending on the competition. When we’re bad, especially for a couple of seasons, the attendance plummets.
I hope our football mentality changes over time and can meet the excitment the fanbase in general feels about bball, but I don’t know that it ever will.
To me, a Fulmer hire...
would be devastating. I definitely don’t want to become the school were Phil comes to coach coast into retirement.
Getting a good character guy
would NOT be Fulmer.
His players had too many off the field issues at UT.
In my mind
The two names on the list should only be Strong and Sumlin. If we can’t get either of them, then we can start with other names.
Phil Fulmer looks like a blubbering idiot (like Vandy’s basketball coach). I really don’t know anything about Butch Jones. And I didn’t know anything about Steve Kragthorpe when he was hired either. So obviously Butch Jones is the next Steve Kragthorpe…And that’s logic you can’t argue with
I don't see
how Kevin Sumlin is necessarily better than Butch Jones. Jones has a better record at CMU than Brian Kelly did, and coached for Brian Kelly for a couple of years. His offensive execution is very good, converting a high % of 3rd downs. I haven’t watched the team much this year, but did several games last year and was impressed, and they’re a better team this year.
The site was updated after the original post apparently
and it says Jurich has not contacted Strong and that Jones will be interviewing for the Marshall job.
I really don't want another mid-major coach.
Sumlin is a bit different because he dominated as the Oklahoma OC
No Contact
He hasn’t contacted Strong yet because TJ is waiting till SEC title game has been played. He said he would not contact coaches until after the seaon, regular that is.
Why so much disdain for Fulmer?
It seems everyone just settles on the fact that some of his players were in disciplinary trouble or his last couple of years weren’t up to the standard when he started at Tennessee. But just look at his credentials without attaching Fulmer’s name and tell me his resume would not be incredible for Louisville football. We’re not a destination job like Mike has said and if everyone realizes that how can you refute having a coach like Fulmer on the sidelines for 4-5 years.
- won a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
-winning record in 15/17 seasons in the SEC
-winning percentage of virtually 75% (152-52 record)…he’s 100 games over the .500 mark
-17-0 vs. Kentucky
Basically, I don’t see how anybody on this site can look at these stats and say that Louisville football is above him. If he became the coach and settled here for 4-5 years before retiring or making one more trip to the SEC, I don’t see how that be all that bad for the Cards.
He's old and slimy
That’s as eloquent as I can put it.

In this rare instance I have to disagree with you
First, what’s age got to do with it? Secondly, perhaps more details would be necessary to eloquently explain how to describe him plain and simple as slimy.
I don’t know Nick Saban, Les Miles, Urban Meyer personally…from what I see through the media is that I might not necessarily like their personality (to be kind), but what does that have to do with them being able to coach up the University of Louisville football up to nationally relevant level. You might not like Saban et. al., but who would deny him as a coach here, so why do the same to Fulmer.
We would be lucky to get a coach like Fulmer
Who would at least make us competitive every year in the Big East. Maybe we need to get a little slimy. Wouldn’t be the first or last time.

that being said
I wouldn’t mind Strong from the Gators or McElwain from Bama…I will watch saturday’s de-facto national semifinals game in Atlanta with hopes that we might land either of them…
How reliable is this source?
Never heard of this footballcoachscoop.com. Is it a good source? Concerns me a little that Fulmer may have gotten in to see Jurich. Although, we need a name coach. I’m torn.
I think the Fulmer meeting, if true, is merely Jurich's attempt to hold a broader search
which he alluded to last Saturday. And I applaud interviewing as many coaches as it takes to ensure you get the right guy.

says Jurich met with Fulmer…
I HOPE WE DONT GET FULMER….
sorry for the caps…
it was just done so Jurich could see!
dont hire FULMER!

Fulmer
has contacts all throughout the Southeast prep football hotbeds. We could do a lot worse from a recruiting standpoint. And the man has won a National Championship. I think he’s a “blah” X’s and O’s coach, but I don’t doubt that he’d bring a higher level of talent to the program. He’s a proven Head Coach at the highest level in CFB. We could do much worse, like hiring another mid-major “success” story. Gimme a Fulmer over another Kragthorpe’ing any day of the week. Twice on Saturdays.
Word.
He would get some talent in there with a quickness. Tennessee was always great with recruiting. Plus, I think Fulmer’s age is a good thing. He may not want to move on after a few years. He might really want to settle down and build the program.
Let me be clear. I want Strong, but he may very well get a more lucrative offer from another university in a better situation for winning right away then us.

Eh, maybe in some cases.
I don’t think Fulmer just wants to come collect a paycheck. I think he really enjoys the intricacies of running a program and wants to “coach”. This isn’t a Schnellenberger/Florida Atlantic type of situation.

Nobody knows but him I suppose
I just think it’s a riskier hire than Strong. He’s been out of the game, who knows what type of stodgy assistants want to still work with him, and can he still inspire young men to join his program, much less be great and fly around the field. Louisville isn’t above hiring anyone at this point but I don’t think Fulmer would be a good rebuilding coach at a school like Louisville. Sure it’s mostly baseless but call it a hunch—there’s 2 or 3 better fits out there.

I prefer Strong too
I’m just saying that Fulmer does bring some definite advantages to the mix. If you’re a prep player, you can’t overlook that the guy ran a top program and won a championship and put tons of his guys in the NFL. Strong, good as he’s been as a DC, is unproven as the top guy. I still like him, but I would not be disappointed at all if it’s Fulmer.
I wouldn't be disappointed, just wouldn't be as excited

This is my sentiment exactly.
Fulmer is ok, but Strong would have me excited a lot more. I think the kids in the southeast would agree too.
