Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I'll go ahead and say it: if these guys go to the Rose Bowl next year, I'm gonna be pissed.

Remember the dynamic Louisville offense from the middle part of the decade?

Illinois head coach Ron Zook hopes to recreate it.

Zook is hiring three former Louisville assistants to handle Illinois' offense in a make-or-break 2010 season.

Paul Petrino, most recently the offensive coordinator at Arkansas, takes the same job in Champaign. Petrino served as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Louisville from 2003-06 before following his older brother Bobby to the Atlanta Falcons and then to Arkansas. Though the move from Arkansas to Illinois might seem a bit odd, Paul Petrino now will get to call his own plays (Bobby handled the Razorbacks' play-calling duties).

Greg Nord, who spent the past 15 years on Louisville's coaching staff, heads to Illinois to coach tight ends. And Jeff Brohm, the former Louisville offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who most recently held the same titles at Florida Atlantic, will coach QBs for Illinois, according to colleague Bruce Feldman.

Best of luck, gents

Think Charlie Strong could hire Schnelly back to L’ville as Def Coordinator? I want to see a Louisville Football-based “60 for 60” ESPN Documentary in 2039, damnit.

mixed emotions

I’ll pull for these guys but I think Zook has at max two years til he is fired. He is a pretty good recruiter but I have never seen any evidence of his being able to coach.

Any one remember Pat Kennedy at DePaul?

Here's his Illinois record

2005 Illinois 2–9 0–8 11th
2006 Illinois 2–10 1–7 10th
2007 Illinois 9–4 6–2 2nd L Rose † 18 20
2008 Illinois 5–7 3–5 8th
2009 Illinois 3–9 2–6 9th
Illinois: 21-39 12-28

I see one year that was quite good. I see four that certainly were not.

Could the spread offense be coming to Louisville?

Im reading that Mike Sanford interviewed over the weekend and was offered the job… For those who are not familiar he was just fired from UNLV for an terrible 5 year tenure as head coach… But on the flip side he was also known as the mastermind of a great offense as OC at Utah under Urban Meyer before his jump to florida….If he accepts he’s surely bringing the spread offense with him

Not a big fan of Sanford

I live in Vegas and let’s just say he couldn’t get a high school coaching job in mountain west country these days. Look on YouTube for a video of sanford going crazy after a UNLV game ended on a controversial call… I’d link to it but I’m on a phone.

The guy was like Kragthorpe here—nice man but not very good at coaching and did not have the confidence of fans or players. Granted, he did take over a program that was terrible and perhaps he’s better fit to be coordinator but, personally, it’s difficult to have faith in someone who mirrored Kragthorpe the last few yrs.

That's the one where he demanded his team stay on the field correct?

A bit of a nut, but maybe that’s only him when he’s under the pressures of a HC. Just calling plays and being the offensive architect is a whole lot less pressure than being the frontman of a NCAA D-I school.

Will the real Charlie Strong please stand up?

While it’s great to see so many fans spreading word of such hope and excitement, the real Charlie Strong twitter account is here: http://twitter.com/CharlieStrong10

How do I know? Try looking for twitter.com/Kragthorpe… doesn’t exist because that board was changed to CharlieStrong10. Krag’s old comments are still on that account.
