i dont wanna be that guy

But why are we keeping pitino?

Is it for his ability to lose lots of games in nov and dec?
Is it the way he consistently underachieves in the ncaa tournament?
Is it the stand-around, do nothing offense?
Is it the way he talks out of both sides of his mouth and throws his players under thr bus?
Maybe its his ability to turn 5 star recruits into 2 star performers?
Or maybe he’s just better at nailing chicks on the tables of italian restaurants than anyone else.

The man is a disgrace to our university and a vastly overrated coach. Let’s start over. Who’s in? FIRE PITINO

by davidson07 on Dec 12, 2009 6:30 PM EST reply actions

"vastly overrated coach" = untrue

Back-to-Back Elite Eights the last 2 years
42-10 BE record, finishing 1st or 2nd in BE over the last 3 years
.744 winning percentage in 43 NCAA Tournament games in career

Everyone realizes the team is playing terrible right now but if they beat UK and win their first few BE games, Nov/Dec losses won’t matter. Pitino deserves patience from the fans; I’m anxious to hear his postgame thoughts.

Disagree. (And not in a "ha ha, you're my rival" way.)

I’m taking off my rival blogger hat, and trying to talk as a human being:

Pitino’s a great coach. He’s going through a very, very tough time in his personal life. I have no idea what’s going on in the locker room and on the practice court, but I would dare say that his personal issues are effecting his work. If the stupidity in my personal life was broadcast on ESPN, I’d probably be shaken up for a long time.

Give him time. He deserves the time to get his life back in order (for all the reasons ULimhhs listed above).

Our zone is fucking terrible.

Jerry can’t play the 3 spot in the zone, or shoot. Swop should not be taking 3s. Samardo needs to learn to fucking play. Does PItino ever have the team practice FTs? I think not. Some luck though, these past two teams seem to making a whole lot more than they miss.

Why did Preston get the T? Did he yell something? I saw him react, but have no idea why they called that.

I would not be shocked if the losing kept up and the banging of the drum for Pitino to go got louder

With the scandal over the summer, there were already people who wanted him gone. Losing only complicates matters. Granted, this is insanely premature and I’m mainly talking out my ass playing devil’s advocate, but the possibility exists. Not so much this year, but maybe next year.

by cardscott5 on Dec 12, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

No--but that fucking sucked

I mean
SUCKED

Pitino was furious/frustrated all game long, Samardo was sullen from the pre-game intros on, our guys were cursing quite loudly—at the calls and each other, we lacked any confidence against Sagarin #87 Western Carolina, PK is our best player and wearing basically an oven mitt to protect his hand, and our big men together grab fewer rebounds than our guards.

In the post game presser, Sam4Gtr warned me Pitino might go off on me if I asked any remotely dumb question— he had apparently told senior press guy Russ Brown that he had asked a dumb question at the presser after the last game (which i did not attend because of the flu).

But…I waded in anyway. I asked if there were attitudinal issues arising -Pitino said obviously confidence was waning and that this team reminded him of the NIT team after our Final 4 team. That team-and this one— just assumed they were going to win it all again, and the all- out effort needed was not there.

I asked if a shake-up was coming— he said he’d already be playing Jennings but that TJ refused to practice hard. He said at this point, he’s going to play whoever brings it in practice—we have nothing to lose.

Finally, I asked if Jerry’s hand had been injured—and Pitino just said he didn’t know—but at that ppoint frankly he just wanted to end the f’ing presser….

Boys…get ready for a brutal season…

No it can't be true

ok so we are not even close to being ready for tourney play. I am totally disappointed in the guys play tonight. I think they really need to look at themselves and try a little harder on listening to rick.my first reaction to the game was did they even let what rick said in practice sink in. Well no!! I am mad at the play and the way they acted in the game and at the refs. This is not going to fly here in Louisville. So point blank you guys need to get your heads off the ground and look up and start playing like you were recruited for. Play like champions. Oh and to all the haters out there leave Rick alone he is a great coach needs to get these guys in the right direction. I know he can he has done it before and will again.they just need to play like they are suppose to.

It's all about recruiting

Guys, I got so disgusted with the game I turned it off seven minutes into the first half and went to 5:00 PM mass. Like I said last week, this all boils down to recruiting. Pitino has not done the job well his entire tenure. He’s found a way to get a lot from his players, but recruiting has generally been awful.

This isn’t going to change until we get high caliber recruits on the floor. Look at the difference great players made at UK. Coaching is vastly overrated at this level. Just as importantly, I think Pitino’s ability to judge talent has diminished greatly.

I’m not about to call for Pitino’s firing, but it’s clear to me he is on the back end of his coaching career. In his postgame, he mentioned the 2011 class. Great, but we’ve got two years before he can those players here and screw with their minds. We live the here and now.

This is going to be a brutal year and Pitino is the reason. The uneven recruiting has finally caught up to him.

by Whacker77 on Dec 12, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions

I hate to agree with this.

But I think it’s pretty much true. Uneven is probably the best way to describe the recruiting. And it has caught up, and it does look like a long year is in store.

That said, Pitino was also the reason for the Big East championship last year, the #1 ranking, and the two Elite Eights the last two years. If he can straighten our recruiting, things could turn around quickly. But 2011 is a long way from now.

by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

samuels

Here’s the deal. Samardo plays ok in practice and Jennings sucks there. But when it comes to game time Jennings can play defense and if Samardo improves his defense against guys driving the lane he might upgrade to matador style. In the last two games he has 6 rebounds. Not per game but total.

Bench him and play Jennings no matter how awful he is in practice. He has an upside and the ability to improve. Samardo can play here for 12 years and he won’t be any better than he is now now.

by cbcard on Dec 12, 2009 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Jennings has been just as bad on defense as anyone else

Everyone thinks of his defense from last year, but he was mainly a weak side shot blocker. He’s not as good when Earl Clark and T-Will aren’t around to help. None of them are. Our defense as a team is atrocious.

by cardscott5 on Dec 12, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

per minute................

…………….Jennings is averaging more blocks than SS. And while there is no stat on “intimidations” like football has on “QB hurries” I guarantee that TJ is ahead of SS by triple on this. Watch the opponents drive the lane. SS contests one shot per game, at best. Remember a couple of games ago he tried twice to draw a charge and started to fall backwards BEFORE there was any impact.

The bottom line is while he can defend his own man he is hopeless at picking up someone else’s. And given how we are allowing mid-major at best teams to shoot 50% and score in the high 80’s and higher our biggest weakness is defense. TJ offers big improvement there no matter how lazy he is in practices. He has the bigger upside for what we need most.

by cbcard on Dec 13, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

I forgot......

……to point out a weakside shot blocker would knock our opponents FG% down at least two points. We have NO ONE in the interior other than Jennings who has shown any ability for help defense,

by cbcard on Dec 13, 2009 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

If you have to

Get some balls and put Rackeem Buckles in at Center and Swop at power forward. Does Pitino mean what he says about effort or not? I can handle the losses I can handle the UK fan base, I can’t handle Pitino getting punked out by his own players who don’t bother to listen to him. Put the people in who work hard and let the other ones kiss his butt on the bench begging to come in and the minute they slack off do the same. An injured Jerry Smith out rebounds our center?!?!?! Hell, really embarrass that fraud Samuels and put Smith at center lol.

by Thales on Dec 12, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

I was at the game

and everything about it sucked. We were 16 1/2 point favorites and were outplayed in every aspect of the game. The NIT would be a stretch based on how we are playing now.

I agree with the above comments about recruiting. We just do not have much talent on the floor. I do not want to hear any shit about the 2011 recruiting class. I want to know what we are going to do now!

Samuels needs a cattle prod stuck in his ass.

by RB in Bardstown on Dec 12, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Some of you are quick to jump on coach right now. I just think it is this group of players. After last season it was easy to look at the team and say they would be alright this year. The truth though in my opinion is, Samardo needs to man the hell up real quick, he’s turned into the old Sosa, sit around and pout, and not do shit. Jerry, WTF? Swop, Kuric, Jennings, Marra, anytime you guys want to show up we will be glad to have you. RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT, thats all I have to say about that,

by ville 606 on Dec 12, 2009 11:11 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I understand and agree with the uneven recruiting

But our last 3 losses have been to teams where we have the better players. Are you telling me that Western Carolina does a better job of recruiting than us?

I don’t know what the hell their problem but they look like they have never played basketball before. WHAT THE HELL is wrong with Samardo? He was the #2 recruit on teh planet and looks like he would ride the pine at a D2 school.

I think the MOST frustrating part is that next year’s recruiting class is basically non existent.

by Dave from Louisville on Dec 12, 2009 11:27 PM EST reply actions

hate to say it...

He needs to go get a John Wall kind of player. Energize this program, I fought and scrapped with Ky fans about these freshman they got, and I’ll be damned if I aint eating my own words right now. Opening “Pitino’s Palace” next year, better do something. One other thing, they had a week of Pitinos practice leading into this game, I figured they would be coming out ready to rip the goals down, WTF?

You all are the biggest group

of overreaction I’ve ever read. Or I’m in significant denial. Time will tell, but our three losses this year have two things in common: (1) a decent team and (2) a depleted UofL.

Point 1— Smith, and Smith alone, playing at 100%, would have given us a win tonight. However, the man is hurt, we’re lucky he even came in and helped. Pitino reported that he’d be out another game as late as yesterday, at the press conference. If a sprained ankle/foot injury cannot throw off a shot, then I don’t know what can. Think about that.

Point 2— Knowles was far from 100%, wearing God knows what on his hand and arm, and still played like a champion.

Point 3— Siva was probably not 100% considering his latest injury, and still played like a champion on defense.

Point 4— I’m not sure how many open shots I saw untaken tonight, but hope to God Pitino gets on that and tells the players to be more selfish. Sure, assists are nice, but only when neccessary.

Point 5— Sosa usually doesn’t throw the ball out of bounds as much as he did tonight. This means either (1) the rest of the team needs to be open for a wild pass when Sosa has the ball or (2) Sosa needs to take the shot instead of passing when driving in. There’s probably a better chance of rebounding the ball in this situation.

Point 6— Samuels days are numbered if he continues to (not) rebound in the same manner. Foul Shy? Do you think Samuels might be foul shy? What’s his average on this? I can’t remember him being fouled out, ever, but it might be good for him just to discover his limit and perfect around it.

Point 7— FINALS WEEK— ever had one? Players are probably more preoccupied this week than any other (at the same time).

Point 8— Terrance Williams was exactly the same with his shooting as anyone (thinking of Smith, Swop, and Delk), if they’re on, we win. If they’re not, we lose. Go back to any losing game last year and see the results of Williams’ shots if you don’t believe that. I thought he was entirely overrated every year except for last, when he was more on than off. I’m hoping to God that Smith turns on, and I think he will, I think he’ll be even more consistent than TWill once he’s healed. You know he’s not 100% though, because Smith doesn’t miss games and Smith starts as a senior. We have seen either of those in the past two losing games.

No point, just comment, I would really like to see a faster team. I’m not saying that any player is slow, just that their entire style of playing is slow. I’ve always thought that Louisville had an advantage when they speed up their play. By that, I mean everything from going coast to coast to not running the shot clock, unless it’s the end of the game and we’re up by a significant margin.

by REALISTICCARDSFAN on Dec 13, 2009 1:21 AM EST reply actions

Samuels fouls

He has 18 fouls in 8 games. He gets so few not because he is such a great defensive player. He gets so few because he isn’t. He helps no one by covering for them if they get beat. He has picked up one open man per game.

SS last year

37 games, 111 fouls which is three per game. had three Dairy Queens.

by cbcard on Dec 13, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Some thoughts

1) The early season has always gone like this. Hell the 05 FF team started off conference play by getting creamed at houston.

2) That being said, we’re about out of time to start showing improvment. Our good teams started winning right about now, our NIT team did not, and our round of 32 team didn’t start playing decent until mid feb. for all intensive purposes. We won’t have that long with this bunch, too many home embarrassments so far to recover that late. If the light doesn’t come on for these guys very soon we’re going to be in the “work left to do” column all year, at best.

3) If TJ and SS are this much of a problem right now, I say play Buckles and Van Tresse at center. Is anyone really going to argue that they couldn’t get just as many points, rebounds, and defensive stops as our current starters? It’s not like we’re winning games with those two guys now.

by dlpfis79 on Dec 13, 2009 9:28 AM EST reply actions

The problem with point 1, is that we got creamed by Charlotte

and then lost yesterday too. You can write off one time as a terrible game, but UNLV ran all over us as well. We came back against them, but not all the way. I’m not going to take anything away from WCU, but losing to Western fucking Carolina is embarrassing.
Also, Van Tresse looks like more of a project, I don’t think he should play

Yes, this year will be brutal. It's obvious now.

And there may be a couple of reasons. Has Pitino lost credibility with his team? Perhaps. If I’m an impressionable 20-year-old kid and some guy whose off-court actions over the past few years could be on Jerry Springer’s show starts talking about integrity and character and what not, I tune him out. Actions speak louder etc. But mostly this on-rushing disaster stems from an abysmal lack of talent. Mike’s right, Preston is our best player and that is not good news. Samuels is slow afoot and of mind. The only thing he does quickly is pout. Jennings has ability but doesn’t understand work ethic. Sosa is an average Big East guard. Jerry can’t manufacture his own shot and we get nothing, or at least very little, from Swop and Delk. How in the hell will this team win in the Big East?

The answer is it probably won’t, unless I’m way off the mark and suddenly we start playing out the wazoo.

This smells of team attitude problems.

I am huge Cards fan but have only been catching a few minutes here and there because of a new baby and school. Therefore, from the outside looking in, I can only assume that there are some internal comradery issues. For what reason, I cannot be sure. I am surprised that Jerry hasn’t stepped in and squashed this as he is arguably the team leader on this squad. On paper, this is certainly as top 25 team.

by MaxCardFan on Dec 13, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions

There could be some attitude problems, but this really all boils down to recruiting. The unevenness of the past few years has finally caught up with Rick. Just as importantly, we have to question whether he is as good an identifier of talent as he once once.

Talking about attitude problems seems to me to be a discussion that focuses on the symptoms rather than the underlying illness. Pitino has finally begun to address that it is recruiting that is the key.

We just have to defend the PG

We are getting eaten alive at the 1, both Charlotte and Western Carolina had quick, decisive guards who completely dominated Siva and Sosa.
If we can get stops or stop the 1 we will be fine
Rebounding as well.
Rick will get it fixed, but we are looking like a 2nd round and done team.

I don't think that the guards were the primary problem

I don’t really remember feeling like we were getting taken one on one from the point of attack, I felt like it was more that we were rotating so slowly on defense that it opened up the entire floor for them to get open shots or drive into the lane.

Dont get me wrong .....

I support coach P but I’ve Always felt like his heart never truly left Lexington…..He’s never really recruited on an elite level since he been here…_ And its just like hes not developing his players anymore…… Samardo has not made any improvement since he’s been here, He’s plays so soft to be 240 LBS , I mean what are they teaching this guy in individual instuction , his game looks to have actually gotten worse, I feel like Earl really never was what his potential could have allowed him to be, he should have easily been a 20point 10rebound guy last year…. I Know Coach P doesn’t like like the one and done players but if hes doing a poor job of developing them we need a guy thats going to step in and make an impact right away… Its no reason why we shouldnt be getting the John Wall’s and Xavier Henry’s of the world here… We play in the best conference in basketballl , Our conference tournament is played at the world famous Madison square Garden where all eyes will be on you… You will get to play in a state of the art 22,000 seat arena…Come on this is an easy sell…..It should be no reason why we dont stay loaded year in and year out

by TRUCARDFAN on Dec 13, 2009 2:32 PM EST reply actions

The 1 and done thing is bullshit

Pitino says this, meanwhile Louisville was going after Jeremy Tyler, who hello, was going to be 1 and done. The fact he skipped high school to go to Europe proves that point. If Fab Melo doesn’t suck, does anyone think he’s going to stay more than a year at Syracuse? I don’t know if it’s an excuse or what, but nearly every top 20 recruit is 1 or 2 and done.

by cardscott5 on Dec 13, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Recruiting is 70% contacts, 20% skill, 7% luck, and 5% butterscotch ripple...

…or is that the recipe for an Everlasting Gobstopper? Either way, I expect the Cards will be OK. Pitino can still coach. Better players are on the way. Unfortunately, in comparison with UK, this looks like the year of the cat.

by Whacker77 on Dec 14, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

Just want to make one comment.

Everyone keeps saying how Pitino’s recruiting is down and he needs to get with the times and stop recruiting players to develop and focus more on the one and dones. I’m not saying that’s not entirely true either; I would just like to point out that Terrence Williams was a 3 star recruit and became eighth pick in his draft class. Sometimes this stuff works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m willing to give Pitino the benefit of the doubt since it’s worked out more often than not for him. It’s just not right now.

by CARD_G6 on Dec 13, 2009 7:20 PM EST via mobile reply actions

And another point to add to this

A bit out of context, but Cincinnati has arguably the best starting 5 in the Big East right now made up of 3 star recruits (Vaughn, Gates, Wright), a transfer, Mike Wiliams, and a risky 5 star, Lance Stephenson. So I wouldn’t say it’s all about getting McDonalds All Americans in at every position, it’s about spotting talent that fits your team and making them get the system.

I really think it’s down to the complexity of the system, not recruiting or any of this other B.S. Our team has top 15 talent, but we’re not executing in ANY phase of the game and have no confidence at the moment.

by bartenpa on Dec 13, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Samardo and TJ

were 5 start recruits. Samardo was supposed to be the best thing sinced sliced break. I don’t think its pitino’s fault he hasn’t panned out.

by Jason G on Dec 13, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

Exactly

5 Star recruits are no guarantee of success. If you want to get all guys who are sure things, well that’s just not going to happen, we’re not UNC or Duke.

by bartenpa on Dec 13, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

Sure it’s his fault. He’s got Samardo so confused, the guy can’t walk straight. Samardo’s a power forward who wants to face the basket, yet Pitino forces him to play center and says he needs to play above the rim. That’s a coaching error.

by Whacker77 on Dec 14, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I vote with the "people are overreacting" crowd

There’s plenty of talent on this team, though Samardo is a real puzzle. Remember how erratic T-Will was? He didn’t really catch fire until his senior year, and then he became a lottery pick. Blaming Pitino and screaming for his head is just nuts. He’s a great coach. This bunch will come around.

…Were just not getting guys that fit the system Pitino runs….. we need a big athletic center down low that can control the paint, run the floor, and see the floor well enough to identify open shooters ( Something David Padgett was great at ),,, We need pure shooters mixed with a couple athletic guys… Lets face it we play an inside out game it doesnt require athletic guys like the dribble drive or similar offenses because for the most part were really not trying to beat anybody off the dribble and the mid range jumper is pretty much nonexitent in our system… so we need deadly outside threats out there hanging around the perimeter ( Im not talking just good shooters like we have now im talking great shooters ) Imagine this starting five….. 3 deadly outside shooters mixed in with an athletic guy that can keep the crowd energized with some above the rim dunks and also works hard on the boards and a true 7 foot center that completly commands the paint …. Also I think were should go after bigger guards I think it would make our matchup zone a nightmare to deal with and make our press more effective….

If you look at the personnel,

I think this is what Pitino was really trying to go for. Marra, Smith, Knowles, and Sosa are all good shooters, but Smith and Marra are having slumps, Knowles has been injured, and Sosa can’t do it all by himself. Even Kuric and Delk are supposed to be pretty good outside threats (at least at the level of T-Will) who are just not sinking them or are too afraid of taking them.

This team is just having a huge issue with confidence. Everybody looks like they don’t know what they’re really supposed to be doing. They want to drive the lane, but their not athletic enough AND don’t hve the inside threat to clean up. They try shooting, but they miss early and don’t have anybody to rebound, so they’re scared of continuing to get empty posessions off of what are considered fairly low percentage shots. The end result is a lot of guys looking very uncomfortable and indecisive. Maybe some time is all they need, but at this point, this team may struggle this way all year. We’ll just have to wait and see.

not running the streets with pitchforks...yet

here’s how I see it, first of all we can can all agree that we aren’t hanging any banners this year, with that said, like someone said above we have top 15 talent, I do believe that. I think the injuries are factoring in bigger than we think and it doesn’t help that the injuries happened right when we played 2 very hot teams right now (they are kinda like Hansel from zoolander). We did lose 2 lottery picks and uk will see what that feels like next year as well, and we did win the big east title sweep arguably in the big easts best year in a long time. We just have to make sure uk doesn’t win the gaul darn title (go jayhawks), although one good thing about coach cal is that he always chokes in the big games. With all that positive spin I will now say we need to get a year removed from the sypher scandel which I do believe might have set the program back a year or 2. We really need to land Teague and his friends and then keep out recruiting steady from there. We need to stay a consistent top 25 team even in the off years like this one building to final four level every few years in between, it is a completely different landscape today and the days of the Dynasty are over. North Carolina is a perfect example of where we need to be, with as much as they lost they are still a quality team. that’s my 2 abe lincolns on the matter.

I spent more money than I should have just to travel to Louisville so I could be in town for the 1/2 game. I guess I’ll be spending a lot of time with granny instead!

Box Score Says...

It was Free Throws. Every other team stat was almost dead even except assists, where Louisville suprisingly had 21 to WCU’s 12. Louisville shot 53% at the stripe and made 13 less FTs than the Catamounts, who hit 29 of 41 Free Throws, good for 70%…10 percentage points above their season average.

The inbounds turnover and Robinson’s three-pointers in the last few minutes of the 2nd half are what killed Louisville’s chances of a comeback but the game was ultimately lost at the Free Throw line.

Unfortunately or Fortunately I didn't get to see the game

My question would be, how did the Catamounts get those extra free throw chances?

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

I was wondering

If they were attacking us or if maybe we were making stupid fouls.

still...

giving up 91 points at the Hall?

by twistedwedge on Dec 15, 2009 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

agree

Louisville has superior talent, supposedly superior coaching and was the home team. Suffering 91 pts at home to pretty much anyone sans VMI is not good.

I love me some RP

Rick is a top 10 coach and a hall of famer. RP has earned the right to do lots of things he brought life back into a dieing program. Just last year we were all terrified that he might leave and goto countless other jobs, but he didnt. Even when things got sticky he stayed.Lets show some loyalty and support our team!!!

just cause were bitching

doesnt mean were un-supportive. There is a difference.

by twistedwedge on Dec 15, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Amen

No sane person is calling for Rick’s head. He hasn’t done the job recruiting though and we’re getting hurt on the court because of it.

Concur...

One could make a valid argument that if one wasn’t bitchin’ and PO’d right about now, one could one’s fandom questioned. But that doesn’t mean we don’t support the Cards! (sorry about that exclamation point Mike… it seemed appropriate.)

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
