Open Thread: Louisville vs. Western Carolina
Western Carolina Catamounts at Louisville Cardinals, Dec 12, 2009 4:00 PM EST
This has become a pretty big game for the '09-'10 Cardinals. Things aren't exactly peachy at the moment, but a home loss to Western Carolina and all of the sudden you have the entire country talking about Louisville's problems.
One thing's for certain: it's going to take a lot of buckets to get the job done. Or maybe it's just going to take...

Lil' Buckets.
GO CARDS.

I made that picture my avatar, which is a bit presumptuous. By exec order or vote in the comments I will change it. I don’t know if one man should be so bold.
And I would have done the obamaconme admm but someone beat me to it back in March. If I had author privileges back then, someone would have gotten a perm IP ban. cooler heads prevail.

Make your avatar a zoom on Lil' Buckets himself.
Can’t really see anything with it that small.

Keys?
We need assists and rebounds and Samardo needs to make some baskets. Shooting the lights out wouldn’t hurt either. Go Cards!
small lineup
Sticking with it. Yikes.

Somebody tell Samardo
That you can score when you turn to your left.

bring chichester back??
what do you guys think?
by Cambroni Cardinals on Dec 12, 2009 4:12 PM EST reply actions
Nobody trusts anyone
Case in point. That last possession should have gone to Samardo on the block, instead we got a jacked 3 from 25 feet from Sosa.
we might be...
this reminds me of the dean senior season team

It's not like nearly every other team in the Big East looks awesome or anything
Oh wait, I forgot about Syracuse, Nova, WVU, Cincy, Georgetown, UConn and probably someone else
St. John's doesn't suck this year
And remember, our home and homes are with UCONN, Syracuse and St. John’s. This could be a long Big East season.
Seriously
What the fuck are we doing on defense?
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions
Looked like Jerry pushed off on the rebound.
But I’ll take it.
by Remote Cardinal on Dec 12, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions
I'll give this one to the under 8 time out before I start to worry too much
but I’m starting to lose it
They shoot liek they usually shoot
And we’re down 15.

Whoooooo
It’s stinky in Freedom Hall right now. They’re definitely not better than us. They’re just completely out executing us in every phase right now. We are not good. At least not right now.
I'll bet Charlie Strong could beat WCU single-handedly.

Two questions re: SamSam
1) Does he need to go on a “Caracter” style conditioning & diet routine? Seems he could stand to drop a few and really increase his quickness.
2) I’m know how aware of a drill that exists to enhance someone’s spatial awareness, but if one actually does exist, please share it with Rick to use with SamSam. His recognition skills seem so underdeveloped. A result of his small amount of years playing the game, I guess.
Ref Jersey waiving guy in the background behind Strong
That guy will have the big one if we don’t get better this month.

Charlie
daring someone to challenge the fact that he’s wearing a blue sweater inside Freedom Hall.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Dec 12, 2009 4:32 PM EST reply actions
Yeah, and now he's playing harder
Samardo’s making it a pretty easy choice.
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions
Potential-wise
I think he always has been.
by Remote Cardinal on Dec 12, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions
I really wish we could figure out a way to let SS play the 4 spot.
I think he’d be happier.

From Eric Crawford:
A little girl in the Freedom Hall crowd, down near the floor here, just screamed, “You can do better than this!”
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 4:38 PM EST reply actions
Frustrating first half so far
One more slow recovery on defense and they’ll be able to add me banging my head against the wall to that Pepsi Max commercial.
Ok -Courtside- pre- game intros, samardo comes put looking sullen
Rest of team lifeless in intros too..
Playing that way – again.
Again— no close – out on 3’s ! No follw- up O rebounds
siva injected a bit of juice, but
no strong D, piss poor passing, no bounding…
This will be a struggle …

Why are we getting beat in transistion so much?
by Remote Cardinal on Dec 12, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions
Why is Samardo in?
And Jennings on the bench?
by Cool Hand Cards on Dec 12, 2009 4:46 PM EST reply actions
Spend most of that TO chewing Swop...
(why not chew on Samuels a bit?)

Preston really might be the best player on this team
And as much as I love him, that’s not good.
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions
Getting beat in pts. off turnovers...
That’s (to risk a pun) a cardinal sin.
by Remote Cardinal on Dec 12, 2009 4:51 PM EST reply actions
The most interesting things so far...
Intros— at end Brickley does a truly great R U Ready scream

who utters a few words and ends with a
Go Cards— that sounded a bit like a question…
Just introduced Will Scott, straight from Oxford

I'm worried
About these guys finding their stroke in the second half. You know, since we’re apparently not going to guard them.

Griffith's there?
Be embarrassed, boys.
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions
For real
He plays as much D as Buckles and Swop, but at least he can block shots. And he scored today
Jennings starts the second half
and we’re up three.

by REALISTICCARDSFAN on Dec 12, 2009 5:18 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Ok- at least we've come out w some juice this half
BTW— Preston is not only taped on his hand but is wearing what looks like half a boxing glove on it too
how he shoots or dribbles… Man

What rule is play by play guy talking about?
The rule of being allowed to call timeouts when you have the ball? He was laying on the floor, what’s shifty about that
Charlie Strong's Facebook page is fake
His only real twitter is: CharlieStrong10
Back to whatever the hell we’re watching.

He just took over the old Kragthorpe account
That’s who the old Krag account followed.

odd

CharlieStrong10 on Twitter
The tweet history on that account has a bunch of old UofL football tweets during this past season. Is this the Louisville-run account for whomever is coach? Doesn’t seem genuine.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Dec 12, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions
No that was a real foul.
Problem is that they aren’t calling the same thing against WC.
What are we rebuilding with?
There’s nobody on this team that looks like a star except Siva and we have one no-name recruit coming in next year.
by Cool Hand Cards on Dec 12, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions
I'm sorry, I forgot about Knowles being a Jr.
But we have no consistent big men. Period.
by Cool Hand Cards on Dec 12, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions
This is all abut recruiting.
We are not superior in talent to a good number of teams.
by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 6:04 PM EST reply actions
Not to mention we're getting killed
When one of their best players was out for essentially the whole game w/ foul trouble.
I never thought I'd say this, but
Maybe Rick needs to leave. He has no passion on the sidelines. It looks like he couldn’t care less.
Go Cards!
I'd say the real answer is that he's so mad he can't speak
Rick’s passion is constant. This team just has no identity.
No way Rick should go.
But he gets the praise in the good times, and he deserves to take the heat now. It is his responsibility to keep enough talent in-house to avoid something this embarrassing.
by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions
Kragthorpe's gotta be in Freedom Hall somewhere
must have snuck in after strong left to hit the recruiting trail
I'm going keep saying it.
He cursed us somehow. He paid a witch doctor, and we have been Kragcursed.
Now he's messing with Strongmas
by UL is my hot hot sex on Dec 12, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions
Charlie will find him.
And the results won’t be pretty.
by Cool Hand Cards on Dec 12, 2009 6:15 PM EST up reply actions
Reasons why
Jennings has played hard lately
Swop was on the floor when I said that
Marra plays defense
Preston is Preston!
Sosa always starts
I still believe that this team will play good basketball at some point this year
Will I be able to watch until then? Not sure. This is really rough.
A dropoff this year is understandable.
But I didn’t expect us to fall off a cliff. This is not ok.
by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions
This happened the year after we went to the final four
best to expect from now on a year of success followed by the dive into hell
At this point, I hope this year turns out as well as 05-06.
We managed to handle December that year. It as the Big East that killed us.
by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions
That team played nobody
Rick scheduled soft that year. We had like 1 loss or so before we lost to Kentucky, and then the bloom was off the rose. I hope we turn it around
Fuck this fucking game
I fucking quit.

I agree with Bob V.'s statements about seniors
Just not sure why our Seniors don’t fit that description.
Rick did a lot of talking about blinders this summer
Time to slip those bad boys on.
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 12, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions
Initial impressions.
Samardo, no rebounding, some scoring, but flickering between good and abysmal. Preston came to play, as did Siva, but they were the only ones making anything happen. We missed open shots, we missed big shots. This team needs to understand how to assassinate and dismantle other teams when we have the chance, i.e. the first 4 minutes of the second half. If we had done that, the game could have been over.
The team plays erratic at times.
WCU didn’t as much force turnovers, as we were reckless. Just look at the key possession of the game. After the 3, we throw away the inbound pass, another 3 and it was over. This sucks
Role reversal
Could this year be the postseason mirror image for us and UK? If so, here’s hoping they are upset in the Elite Eight (or earlier).
by cardsinindy2010 on Dec 12, 2009 6:26 PM EST reply actions
Yeah, but where's the turnaround coming from for us.
We have to somehow turn our team into a collection of top players, and that’s what scares me.
That is why I keep complaining about recruiting.
We lose some of our best players this year without adding anyone of note. Our young guys will be better, but how much better? It better be a lot, b/c 2011 is another long year away. I hope nobody de-commits, and I hope like hell we get 2 out of 3 on Shaw/Blackshear/Teague.
