All-Decade Louisville Basketball Team Debate

Here's your debate for the day: If one were to create an All-Decade Louisville basketball team, who would comprise the starting five?

I think you have to say Reece Gaines, Francisco Garcia and Terrence Williams are locks, but after that it's tough. Ultimately, I settled on David Padgett and Taquan Dean, but legit cases can be made for Marques Maybin, Ellis Myles, Larry O'Bannon and Earl Clark, among others.

I'd put Clark over Dean

But I agree with all the other selections

I agree with Gaines and Williams

But I would have Padgett as a lock over Garcia.
I think Garcia, Clark and Maybin are the second tier with the rest mentioned in the third tier.

my starting 5

PG Dean
SG Garcia
SG Gains
SF Williams
PFClark

I want to say Sosa is better than Dean, i think he could show that this year. Call me crazy

how can you pass on Padgett

He was the T shirt of this team. I’d have to take him over E. Clark.

I'll do a first and second team

Because I love the Cards that much. One rule for my 5, no repeat positions, i.e. only 1 PG, 1 SG, etc.

1st Team

Taquan Dean
Marques Maybin
Francisco Garcia
Earl Clark
Ellis Myles

2nd Team

Reece Gaines
Larry O’Bannon
Terrence Williams
Luke Whitehead
David Padgett

The toughest pick for me here was Dean over Gaines. Dean simply won more. He was a better rebounder and a better defender at the position, and he seemed to create more offense for his teammates. I could have made the case for Gaines at SG, but he really only played one season at that slot.

One edit to mine.

After pouring over their stats, I’d have to put Larry over Marques. I thought for sure he didn’t have the numbers Maybin did, but looking at the stats, he did. Plus he was a big winner. I made an effort not to have the ’05 Final Four team take up too much of my 1st team, but they were just that good.

All-Decade Teams

1st Team
PG – Francisco Garcia
SG – Reece Gaines
SF – Terrence Williams
PF – Earl Clark
C – David Padgett

2nd Team
PG – Taquan Dean
SG – Larry O’Bannon
SF – Marques Maybin
PF – Luke Whitehead
C – Ellis Myles

These are my teams too, except I'd go ahead and call Reece the PG, and Garcia the SG.

If I got in trouble for having 2 technical SF on that team (even though Garcia could play that position), I’d move Garcia to 1st team SF, Maybin to 1st team SG, and O’Bannon and Williams would be 2nd team.

same

can’t change it except maybe for earl clark over dean, but dean did more in his time here, so i would leave him in.

padgett

wasn’t one of the top 5 players IMO in the past decade. He was probably around 7-8th. Sorry man, i think Clark is better

Gee.....

……….these teams are lacking in character, oops I mean Caracter, oops again he transferred. And whatever did become of the goofus?

by cbcard on Dec 1, 2009 2:41 PM EST reply actions

Larry O?

Man, I loved watching him play, but I wouldn’t put him in all-decade.

Garcia, Gaines, Williams, Clark, Myles. . .I think.

You all have to be kidding me..

How can you all possibly leave out Sebastian Telfair, Donta Smith, and Jeremy Tyler.

Those guys were awesome talents and deserve a mention on the all-decade team…oh, wait a minute.. what? are you serious? you mean they never…?

douche nozzles.

Who are we playing in the Maybin picture?

Tennessee or Syracuse? There is a lot of orange in the crowd that I don’t recall

by jaxcard on Dec 1, 2009 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Syracuse

It’s when we beat them when they were top five and had just one loss.

by Mike Rutherford on Dec 1, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's red in the crowd.

Look at Maybin’s jersey — it looks orange, too.
