Open Thread: Louisville vs. Arkansas

Louisville Cardinals at Arkansas Razorbacks, Nov 17, 2009 7:30 PM EST

The beginning of the season is always tricky, but if this dog can win a Big East football game, then I'm pretty sure she can bring home the beggin' strip this evening.

Go Cards!

Not that the luck of the dog is needed for our basketball team, but it doesn’t hurt.

GO CARDS

Cardwear Sporting Dog (CSD) is calm, free from anxiety or fear. We could learn much this dog.

Game time....

Whose excited? My excited, that’s whose.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 7:34 PM EST reply actions

Gottlieb

Calls it a must- win for Arkansas. Makes as much sense as anything he ever says, I suppose.

by statprof on Nov 17, 2009 7:36 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Zone offense...

….looks about the same as last year.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions

Bench Sosa

srsly. Siva so much better

by sam34gtr on Nov 17, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions

Edgar...

..let’s give him until the first TV timeout fellas.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions

You mean

He looks like he’s got a future as an accountant who smokes pot on the weekends? Yes.. I’d say yes on that.

Samuels and Jared

Both looking good on the offensive boards so far.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 7:42 PM EST reply actions

Not impressed with Samuels so far...

We need some flashing to the middle to exploit the zone.

Also, Sosa’s 2 three attempts haven’t been great imo.

We needed that timeout.

Someone has to rebound, or at least all 5 should not be on the same side of the court

by cardscott5 on Nov 17, 2009 7:57 PM EST reply actions

I want to see Peyton breaking people down

He needs to get into the lane so we can start breaking this team down some.

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 7:59 PM EST reply actions

To Arkansas credit

they came out fast, and I don’t think we were ready for it…

Jerry reach!

3 by Swop?

Glad to see almost anyone on our team can shoot em.

by CardinalDude on Nov 17, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

And we're back...

….seriously, does Knight not realize that our zone offense does not involve getting the ball inside? And that apparently is a choice/design?

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

Hey CC, Remember this is about Louisville

A couple of things we know will happen.

- We will start super duper slow. We’ll even lose a game we have no business losing,
- By January we will be rolling,

it doesn't happen every year

but it does seem to be the norm; even Pitino would admit that.

by UL is my hot hot sex on Nov 17, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

Nope, it's the truth

But I still hate this phase of the season. I can’t wait until we’re hitting people w/ backdoors and stuff, that usually comes later on.

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Especially true this year...

..for all the talk of freshman, guys like Kuric, Delk, Swop and TJ will get a lot more time this year than they did last year.

We’re in a perfect spot this year because we don’t have those expectations.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Bob Knight - Broken Record

We have fouls, we’re missing layups. Ok. Talk about something else!

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply actions

Our inability to finish while getting fouled is already something I dislike.

by CardinalDude on Nov 17, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

Swop is all over the boards.

And with the 3.

Most improved player by far.

by CARD_G6 on Nov 17, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions

too soon

But that is going to be a running joke this year.

Has to be on a nice assist/dunk.

Delk again

Arkansas is really having trouble scoring.

by cardscott5 on Nov 17, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions

Two things

1) I hate early games because I always have unrealistic expectations, such as the team having a feel for each other and running a smooth offense. I should probably just wait until mid-December to watch for my own health benefit.

B) Why did SS switch numbers? Confused the hell out of me.

Oh, and GO CARDS!

Also...

…we’re playing against a zone, which has always made our offense look out of sync.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 8:26 PM EST reply actions

Alcorn State must suck a ton

because Arkansas is not very good at all.

by cardscott5 on Nov 17, 2009 8:27 PM EST reply actions

Yeah. But as Knight keeps repeating

He does nothing to get himself open. It should be easy to contain him if he keeps standing still.

by Remote Cardinal on Nov 17, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

True

I also agree with Knight that Alcorn must have been playing a lot of zone when Clarke went off for 51.

I hate the "coming off the court" interviews

Let the coaches get into the locker room and do their thing, catch them on the way back out. I also hate ANY dugout interviews in baseball.

Okay half...

….seems like we have guys who can hit wide-open threes.

Until we see man defense it will be tough to know how the inside-out game works.

Rick didn’t seem too mad about the fouls, we always play aggressive defense with our hands.

Jared doing a decent job on the boards.

Overall, one big run and I need more Rock Buckles in my life and we’re good.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Rick may not have seemed mad about the fouls

but it still shows that we weren’t moving our feet well

I'm not one to normally do this, but what is with Bob Knight?

He’s been down on L’Ville all game, even having to correct himself about “not getting the ball inside enough”.

by jch24 on Nov 17, 2009 8:47 PM EST reply actions

I actually respect the coach's critical eye angle, it's refreshing

better than the lovefest you see on MNF with Gruden always being positive. But he does sound like an old man at times when he says stuff under his breath…“Get the ball out of his hands…”

by UL is my hot hot sex on Nov 17, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

I enjoy his insight as well.

But he seems to really focus on one or two things ALL game.

by CardinalDude on Nov 17, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Ironic how the OCD that makes you a good coach

Doesn’t necessarily make you qualified to talk about the game to others. I hate that ESPN is just a retirement home for washed out coaches/players.

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

He reminds me of my dad in a lot of ways

Decides very early what his opinion is and justify it against all odds (sometimes just by repeating the same thing over and over), ignoring the fact his original opinion is wrong.

Just me or have the refs decided to let them play this half so far.

Haven’t called 3-4 of the over the back calls that they made in the first half.

by Remote Cardinal on Nov 17, 2009 8:50 PM EST reply actions

Wide-open 3s

When we miss those, that allows them to get back into it. They’ve scored on every possession so far. Eventually we will score.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 8:52 PM EST reply actions

WTF?

So much for letting them play.

One or two guys...

…all we need is one or two guys to get hot per night.

Again, hard to tell because they are basically giving us open 3’s. Doubt we’ll see that again this season. Unless teams use last year’s scouting report.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 17, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions

See...

We get on a little run, Ark calls a time out. Why didn’t we?!

by CardinalDude on Nov 17, 2009 9:03 PM EST reply actions

No. He was tentative all last season.

Pitino would have been happy to get 10 minutes from Delk a game last season, but it wasn’t there to take.

It's good to see Jennings playing some good D

He could be a huge difference maker for us this season, just makes me think how good he could be if he had done more work over the summer to better himself.

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 9:09 PM EST reply actions

Jennings is so raw still

If he refines his offensive game more, he’ll be amazing.

by Remote Cardinal on Nov 17, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

If he could get some consistency with his moves, he could really dominate people.

by bartenpa on Nov 17, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

And stay on his feet on D.

He bites on the ball fake too easily (1st half and exhibition games)

by 83fan on Nov 17, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think they’ll have a good year this season.

by CARD_G6 on Nov 17, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but the men's holdovers are much higher recruits than the women's.

Likewise, the men’s recruiting class was solid, whereas I don’t think the women’s was quite as good. Not bad, but not enough to vault them to the same level of success as last season.

by CARD_G6 on Nov 17, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
