This Week's Open Thread Nomination: Dr. StrangeKrag

Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Tommy Tuberville.

Muchos, muchos props to VTCard on ITV who posted this picture in a thread earlier this week.  As soon as I saw it, I knew it was destined to sit atop the Open Thread this week.  But this is sorta a democracy around here (although Mike's voting bloc = the total number of votes cast in a given poll + 1) so I thought I'd put it up to a vote.  What say you, CardChroniclers?  Do we have an Open Thread picture for this week?

Ladies and Gentlemen...

THE VILLE is officially KRAGGRAVATED. No fear, basketball slowly approaches.

Slim Kragg'ens

President Kragthorpe: Louie, I’m just as sorry as you are. Why, if I wasn’t sorry, you probably wouldn’t have even gotten a phone call.

This is perfect.

You can reimagine the scene aboard the plane when Slim gets the code as the scene in the huddle when the Sausage King (or Burke) gets the call to run a draw on 3rd and 9. “That must be a test message.”

OK, I can't keep up with the "official" rumors

Is it still Tuberville? Or are there legs at all to the Gruden rumors? Gruden’s my guy but it seems so far-fetched, just as bringing Pitino to Louisville sounded off the wall.

So which is it friends. My spirit needs lifting.

Hey, FireKragthorpeNow posted the picture of Steve on the bomb almost a year ago. Let’s give credit where credit is due. That site’s been on Steve from the get-go.

I created this and a few other shooped pics last September at the beginning of the huge PS thread on ITV and just recently re-posted it.

Gruden in town?

I heard from two die hard/well-connected UofL alum yesterday that Gruden was seen on campus and playing golf out at the Cardinal Club. Can anyone confirm or deny this crazy rumor? I can’t believe it either, but I couldn’t believe the Pitino rumors when they started buzzing too.

The truth

Hey guys, I heard that Jon Gruden is going to stop pursuing $5 million+ per season contracts at top tier schools and NFL teams, in order to relocate to a school with little football tradition in a struggling conference for $1.5 million per season.

It doesn’t matter though, because Jurich sold his soul to resurrect Bear Bryant. I heard Zombie Bear Bryant was seen at Vincinzo’s with the Brohm’s (my best friend is a server there).

and zombie Bryant was feelin' up a waitress in the coat room

while Oscar Brohm was calling for sloppy seconds

Schnelly on the hot seat at Florida Atlantic

Could Schmilk Chuggenburger be our next co-head coaches?

Rumor from a reliable infomercial source (Ron Popeil)

After fixing my bald spot with a can of spray last night, Popeil revealed to me that Perfect Brownie Pan is on the outs with USC after the recent weightlifting tragedy and is looking for work in a different time zone to appeal to a wider audience.

Sorry…too soon?

newest rumor

heard gruden is new coach for 3 yr – 3.5 mill….isn’t that less than Kragthorpe salary now? not really sure. But these rumors are staring to come from brother of your mother who lives with Joh.

by Final4Galore on Oct 7, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

not sure

but i would assume it is false. but take it for what it is worth

Hey Frank,

is Tuberville you’re best guess? I’d like to think we’d have a shot at pulling off something like a Gruden hire, but can’t for the life of me see why Gruden would take the job.

TT was the leading candidate by consensus of reliable posters

But this Gruden thing won’t die— and has some interesting legs to it

by frankpos on Oct 7, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

InsideTheVille continues to percolate with Gruden stories on the premium board. This is either part deux of the Billy Donovan situation, or we have a big time coach.

Does anyone have a source of info…or is this all just up in the air…because I havn’t been this excited since the Pitino rumors began!

Mike McCammon of ITV on a Facebook post 7 hrs ago:

If Jurich could land Gruden it would be an absolute grand slam hire. Such a grand slam that I am skeptical of it coming to fruition.

With that said, I have multiple sources that I have worked with for years – folks that helped me break news about both Petrino and (cough) Kragthorpe – that are giving the impression that Gruden is the primary target and that it is within the realm of possibility…. Read More

Personally, I am still skeptical, because it seems to good to be true.

In addition to Gruden, I’ve been told that (should a change be coming) Tommy Tuberville, Chris Peterson, Jeff Jagodzinski, Kevin Sumlin, Charlie Strong are some of the names of the list on candidates.

by frankpos on Oct 7, 2009 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

Having Gruden dangled in front of our eyes makes someone else a bit of a letdown. The other names on the list are fine, but I wouldn’t like Jagodzinski. He’s trouble. I’m not a big fan of Strong. Too many failed interviews.

Having said all that, anyone would be a great upgrade and a reviver of life to the program. Frank keep bring us the good info. I’m still in debt to you for the email you sent to me way back in December 2007.

Why Gruden comes to the Ville

What was FSU football before Bobby Bowden? What was Penn State football before Joe Paterno? What was Duke basketball before Coach K?

We may not be a tradition-rich program, but you have the chance here to create that tradition. If you go to Michigan, Ohio State, ND, or [insert big name here], you’re just another great coach. If you succeed at Louisville and stay awhile, you will be the program. Schnelly and Petrino are somewhat revered here and both left after relatively short stints.

Other pluses: plenty of money, a well-liked AD, expanded stadium, and more students living on campus.

by centrecard on Oct 8, 2009 12:35 AM EDT reply actions

No fucking way Jon Gruden does this to Louisville football

He’ll be here until the NFL comes calling again. Gruden is not a long term answer

by cardscott5 on Oct 8, 2009 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Do we really need a long term answer?

Or just someone to step in and right the ship? If he’s here for 5 years or less but he wins a Big East title and BCS bowl game, are you really going to be upset when he leaves to coach the Redskins?

We need someone to change the culture of the program right now and if that person leaves after 3 or 4 years, then we hire an up-and-comer and pray that it doesn’t turn out like Kragthorpe. It’s a crapshoot obviously as we’ve witnessed with Krags and his shining resume/hype prior to Louisville but if it comes to that, let’s at least interview some guys with experience recruiting in the South and public relations savvy.

Yes

I’m in the Strong, Turner Gill, Bud Foster, Will Muschamp(sp) camp. I think I’m the only one

by cardscott5 on Oct 8, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

My only problem with that is...

I don’t think those guys are big enough to right this ship right now. We are quite possibly one of the worst teams in the FBS, but we’re definitely the worst team in the BCS. Offensive coordinators and non-BCS coaches with marginal success just aren’t going to do the trick right now. We’ve fallen so far so quickly, with such little BCS tradition in the first place, that to get pack to BCS prominence is going to take somebody with skill, experience, and a big reputation.

Gruden may be an overshot, but Tuberville is absolutely not.
