Return to Halcyon Days

I was a Coach K supporter before he started and since then my support has steadily declined.  However, I do think he should have gotten 3-4 years to prove himself even with the 6-6 season after the Orange Bowl win (it's pretty apparent three years will suffice).  Every coach deserves the chance to get his system in place.  But it looks like things are not improving, but just the opposite.  I too feel bad for the guy, but this assignment may be too daunting.  Hey, it happens.

So while we ponder what coach we want, what coach we can feasibly get, who is in the rumor mill, we should continue to support our young guys out there week after week.  If you live where you can attend the games continue to do so and us who live thousands of miles away will continue to watch/listen from afar and give our support in spirit.

I'm not looking to contend for a BCS bowl every year although it's nice when it has happened.  I just want a decent team, some bowl bids, and something to cheer about.  Hell, even if we lose I would like to lose with some spirit, pride, and determination and that's just not the case right now.  If we were 1-3, but played valiantly every week I would feel better.

This post is called a return to halcyon days and I will close with that.  A lot of times reminiscing doesn't help and we can't live in the past.  But sometimes, after a few Maker's Marks it feels good in tough times to discuss how things used to be.

And you know what that means to me?  All your guess are wrong.  No, I'm talking my junior year at UofL, 1993.  We were a major independent.  Schnellenberger was still smoking his pipe with a tweed jacket and tie on the sidelines.  We were still in that ridiculous AAA baseball stadium that was for all intents and purposes...a dump (but it was our dump).  But the tailgating was great, our team came out and played hard every down, the fans were passionate, and we saw some great games.  Great schedule (home wins over Arizona State, Texas, road win @ Pitt, near win @ WVU), good record (9-3), ranked in top 25 at season's end with a Liberty Bowl win, etc.  I'll take it.

Hell, I'd even take the 1992 season...
