Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Cards open '09-'10 season with exhibition victory over Georgetown College

Aside from some less-than-stellar outside shooting from the home team, I'd say this was just about what everybody expected from the opening exhibition.

Georgetown's physical play surprised Louisville in the first half, both teams were sloppy but U of L was able to find the run it needed to secure a double-digit victory.

Just back home from post game presser

Coach was VERY high on Kuric—even said 2 NBA scouts had inquired at practice yesterday!

also he was obviously high on Siva too.

I’ve got to ponder what I just saw in light of the fact that this was an opener, and this Geprgetown team was not ranked in NAIA top 25 like last yr’s was…

Got back from the game awhile ago, here are some thoughts...

*Zombie Nation has been replaced with Pitbull’s Hotel Room Service as the intro song. Maybe I’m the only one who finds this hilarious?

*I think we were trying to get a feel for the squad tonight, but in my eyes, we aren’t putting our best foot forward unless we either a.) go with three guards or b.) play Samardo and Jennings at the same time, and it’s possible we’d be best served if we made both of these moves. Swop, Kuric and Reggie seem like the same players to me, and I just don’t know if we can count on big minutes from them in big games.

*Assuming we don’t go with three guards, I’d be pretty concerned right about now if I were Edgar. Siva’s got an unbelievable motor a nasty first step, and doesn’t seem to take defensive possessions off. It’s hard to imagine him not starting in some capacity by the middle of the year. This is not a knock on Sosa, no. 3 is just that good, and I already feel like he’s going to be one of my all-time favorite Cards. Damn, I told myself I wasn’t going to jump to too many conclusions after two halves against a D-II team. Oh well.

*The rest of the freshmen appear to be works-in-progress. I have no idea how Buckles was player of the year in 4A Florida ball (one friend asked how many classes they have down there), both he and Marra looked tentative and awkward out there. Maybe it’s nerves, but I don’t see either being a significant contributor this year. I also feel like I’m cheering for Eric Devendorf’s little brother with Marra. It’s dirty and not altogether enjoyable when he’s out there.

*Finally, and I’m afraid this is going to make me seem like l’m about 80, but I think the most important addition to our team this year, besides Siva, is Ralph Willard. I was close enough tonight to sense the calming presence he brings to the bench (in addition to looking like Don Nelson), and I think his Xs and Os reputation and long-time friendship with Pitino may help in those in-game situations where our Armani’ed general is too stubborn for his own good. He has the exact personality we need in a first mate. I honestly think there are going to be times this year when we basically have two head coaches, and that’s a good thing.

*Great to be back for the final year in Freedom Hall, but why the hell is this game on Oct 28?

Curious to hear what others thought…

by doctorofdunk on Oct 28, 2009 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

No love for Kuric?

Thought he looked five times better than last year and Swop seems to have improved his strength and offensive confidence. I’m not sold on Marra either, especially on defense come Big East play.

Agree about Willard, though…might end up being the best “recruit” that Pitino signed in the offseason, no offense to Siva.

Pitino said the game was played tonight due to Freedom Hall scheduling issues and added that he’d rather wait another week to play G-town but his hand was forced.

Hotel Room Service

It’d be ironic if it wasn’t intentional, very funny.

Did they still use the Requiem for a Dream Music for the intro video?

by Dais on Oct 29, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Sadly, no.

They didn’t play Lux Aeterna during the intro. Quite frankly, I was a bit let down by this year’s video…

They said on tv that rick said they play the games when they can get the arena. I guess this is when it was open

by cardscott5 on Oct 29, 2009 12:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Freedom Hall

I suppose the arena was booked b/c UK was having practices there. It’s stuff like that that makes me take a step back and realize that following college sports is a little silly.

I mean, c’mon, there’s a college team going on a roadshow to showcase their practices? Puh-leez.

Considering Pitino's history for late starts...

…it almost feels like a waste of time to analyze until mid-January. We looked mostly terrible, but we always do this time of year.

We’ll find out a lot about him when the big east starts, but I’m really high on him too.

crap

that was supposed to be a reply to sam.

I was at the game. My thoughts:

Siva looked much better than Sosa. Sosa seemed somewhat improved, but Still So-so Sosa. Sosa would drive, get fouled and not make the shot, whereas Siva would drive and dish and get the bucket, and two were to Kuric, which was really nice.

Speaking of Kuric, he looked good. I know it’s the first game, and it was only against a D-II team, but with the way Delk played, or in this case, didn’t play, I could easily see Kuric getting starts.

And I would have to agree with above. Our teams always seem to start slow and don’t get rolling until mid-January. We’ll see what we have then.

by CardinalDude on Oct 28, 2009 11:33 PM EDT reply actions

I was there too

The ref’s were whistle happy. The seniors were in sleep mode. Siva is the real deal (thank you sweet jesus), and he and Kuric work well together. Samardo was still not quite what he could be, and Swop and Delk need to take over a game before they hit their stride. We’ll be fine. And beat kentucky.

Go Cards!

by Red Rage on Oct 29, 2009 1:23 AM EDT reply actions

I'm just going to say it

I haven’t seen one thing about Reginald Delk from last year and from the small sample size that says he’s that good. I would be stunned if Kuric didn’t take his starting job by the time Big East play rolls around

by cardscott5 on Oct 29, 2009 1:59 AM EDT reply actions

Kuric should start.

He looked a lot better than last year.

Inbound plays worked well, which is a first for this team, but offense as a whole was pretty stagnant, probably due to nerves.

Samardo looked a little better.

Georgetown is not a D-2 team, they are D-1 NAIA. Not in the NCAA at all.

by CARD_G6 on Oct 29, 2009 3:01 AM EDT reply actions

I agree Kuric has to start if Jennings and Samardo don't play together.

Kuric is a good rebounder. Swop is a shitty rebounder. And I also haven’t figured it out what exactly Reggie Delk does well? It’s not defense, it’s not handling the ball/passing, it’s not rebounding, and he’s a decent shooter. Even if you concede he’s a better shooter than Kuric – which I’m not sure you can – then Kuric is still better at all those other things than Delk is.

I think all of this will be irrelevant b/c Jennings and Samuels will have to play together in the big east b/c we will need the size and rebounding. Swop and Delk vs. the big east will get other teams a lot of second chances on the offensive glass.

by Centre24 on Oct 29, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Delk' strength is

that his cousin played for Rick at UK. Check out Rick’s history. Lots of little brothers and cousins and nephews.

by cbcard on Oct 29, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Jennings

…didn’t look improved at all either, but he also didn’t get much playing time. The notion from Rick that this team is good offensively worries me a little… it was definitely an “off” night for them and it seemed more like a pick up game than one with good offensive schemes. I was happy with about 7:30 left in the game… did you notice that’s about when Georgetown had run out of time outs and the noise in Freedom Hall could not be silenced anymore with timeouts? I think this group will feed off the crowd more than I’d like.. especially when they go on the road and face rough crowds using all the off-season troubles this team has faced.

Other than that, I think the Cards will get it together come January and loved what I saw from Siva and Kuric as well. Samardo looks better too… guess that experience/extra play time with his country’s team helped out.

out of TO's baby.

G-town ran out with 11 minutes to go. I think 11:15.

Did anybody else notice the hitch at the top in Jerry's free throw shots?

I was not too impressed with our captains. Siva looked extremely confident for a freshman and crazy quick. I don’t remember the last time we’ve had anybody that quick on the floor.
Samardo better learn to pass cuz he’s going to get double teamed for the rest of the year.
My wife took one look at Marra and said, “who’s that ghetto redneck?” The kid better be able to shoot lights out.

Samuels and Swopshire have been hitting the weights hard. I appreciate the effort from Swop. We can rag on him all we want but he looks to be in the best shape of anyone compared to last season. Kuric looked good but i don’t count on him getting anymore minutes than Will Scott last year. Siva was a bit sloppy which is expected in front of 19,000 for the first time but he is fast and has a sick cross over move. in transition is he going to do some nasty stuff

by Cambroni Cardinals on Oct 29, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

Kuric

will get more minutes than what Will Scott received, his only other competitor for minutes will be Delk and he looked better than him last night although it was only one game and its a long season to go. But he can rebound and has bigger size, two different types of players.

by Final4Galore on Oct 29, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Siva and Kuric have to play

Big minutes this year.

They have, by far, the most confidence and basketball IQ of anyone on our team.

If you watch Kuric’s eyes when a shot goes up he seems to track the flight of the ball so well that he knows where the rebound will go before it even hits the rim. The only other guy I’ve ever seen do the same thing was Tyler Hansbrough. I told anyone that would listen that #14 was my favorite player and he needed to be on the floor more. He’s improved his hops (how’d ya like that put-back slam off a rebound) and is not a liability defensively. Like everybody has been saying, what does Delk do better than Kuric (very little) and what does Kuric do better than Delk (a whole lot).

Basically the same can be said of the PG battle. Siva has supreme confidence in his game. I remember watching his in the McD A-A game and it looked like he made it his mission to produce a highlight reel for everyone but himself. He naturally does the little things, like a headfake on the break to draw his defender into the air so that he can make an easier pass to his trailing teammate, that Edgar still hasn’t LEARNED. As it was also said, he doesn’t take plays off on defense and has the quickness to keep upwith anyone. Pairing him with Preston will flustere just about any backcourt in our league.

With that said I also understand that This game is probably not completely indicative of what we will be. Rick said he had only installed 2 offensive sets and we’re only working on two weeks of practice compared with two months for the opponents.

Also about Jerry

A very underestimated aspect of last night’s game and where we are as a team is that our truest senior leader just fathered a child less than 2 weeks ago. Anyone who has kids can attest that with your first one the frist 2 months are just about the sacriest time of your life.

And to be a 22 year old college senior, life couldn’t get any weirder. We hear all the time about pros leaving a game at halftime to go to the birth of their child or have a great game when they come back and think its no big deal.

But i’d have to guess that for a college kids the dynamics are very different. If Jerry has any soul he has to have been very moved by the birth of his kid and wants to be a part of caring for it. To couple all of the pressure, fear, and emotion of that with the trainwreck of an offseason that your surrogate father and coach had has to be distracting the guy a bit.

Adding to all of that is the fact that you senior backcourt teammate is barely hanging on to his starting position, has been known to pout more than any other play in the program, and is about the least equipped player on the team to handle adversity has got to make Jerry’s basketball life even more complicated.

I’d like to tink that Jerry is superhuman and can handle all of this but I understand if he struggles for a while. Here’s to hoping for the best from a guy that we need nothing but the best from.

by drhustle on Oct 29, 2009 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

what you say is true but.......

….I really have not seen any improvement in Jerry since he was a soph. Same silly reaching fouls, same fouling the three point shooter, same inconsistent outside shooting with a form that changes from shot to shot. He’s an ok kid but he will not become an excellent player.

by cbcard on Oct 29, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

My thoughts

It was one game, the first game of the season for everyone, and the first game in a Cardinal shirt for some. I’m worried to see people jumping to conclusions about the freshman and sophomores a bit too early, we won’t know who’s right or wrong until midseason, b/c that’s how long it’s going to take for them to get the schemes and their roles locked down.

Angel

By the way, wasn’t it great to see Angel there last night? It’s so great to have winning teams, great coaches (well, except one sport)…. even nationally ranked in men’s soccer! I can’t wait until the new Fball coach is announced so we can cheer them on to victory.
