Coaches tab Louisville fourth in preseason Big East poll

Following the departure of lottery picks Terrence Williams and Earl Clark, defending Big East regular season and tournament champion Louisville has been pegged as the fourth best team in the conference by the league's coaches.

Villanova was named the preseason favorite, followed by West Virginia, Connecticut and the Cardinals.

The complete rankings look like this:

1. Villanova
2. West Virginia
3. Connecticut
4. Louisville
5. Georgetown
6. Syracuse
7. Cincinnati
8. Notre Dame
9. Pittsburgh
10. Seton Hall
11. St. John's
12. Marquette
13. Providence
14. South Florida
15. Rutgers
16. Depaul

Sophomore forward Samardo Samuels was the lone Cardinal to garner an individual honor. He was named to the league's second team.

Notre Dame's Luke Harangody was named the Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season, joining Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing as the only players to receive the honor more than once.

The league's first team - which does not include the player of the year selection - was made up by Greg Monroe of Georgetown, Scottie Reynolds of Villanova, Da'Sean Butler of West Virginia, Lazar Hayward of Marquette and Deonta Vaughn of Cincinnati.

Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson was named preseason Newcomer of the Year.

How does mike bray still have a job? Having the player of the year for this long and finishing awful… The coaches even ranked them preseason #8 wow.

Also cincy getting a lot of love with cashmere wright back and the addition of Stephenson makes them a force. We will finally see if Mick can coach.

Also just a side note, I heard a UK fan complaining that Wall wasn’t first team preseason… Just ridiculous… The guy has never played a game. Talk about hype.

Luke Harangody

Preseason player of the year, because, you know, how great he did last year helping his team…….go to the NIT?

Go Cards!

Gody

The man was averaging close to 20 and 10 last year. If it weren’t for his porous defense (and fantastic years by T-will, Blair, and Thabeet), he would have had more consideration last year. Now that I wrote that sentence, I’m pissed off again that T-will didn’t receive more recognition in conference last year.

Brey still has a job because he does just enough to keep one. Expectations aren’t the highest at ND, and people seem genuinely satisfied with a sweet 16 run every 2-3 years, a first round flame-out the next year, and NIT the year after; repeat. ND has some good shooters and good program players, but they lost Purdue transfer Scott Martin a few weeks back to a torn ACL, I’m sure that was taken into consideration for this poll…

I also wouldn’t sleep on Lazar Heyward, he’s been their second best player after

mcneal the last two seasons.

I think that Georgetown is over rated this season……again. Monroe will be a beast, and I think he will have enough to keep the G’Men competitive, but I’m not sure there is enough scoring around him to make a considerable difference.

The only teams I’m worried about matching up with this year is Villanova and Connecticut. Villanova is solid, and i like what their coach has done with the program. Connecticut basically beat us at our own game next year. There guards will be fast and should handle our pressure pretty well. They will be tough for us to beat. I also think West Virgina is good, but I the 2-3 and our pressure to give them major problems.

Marquette???

Getting no respect at all. 12th?? Seriously, that was a good team last season, did they lose that much. I’ll take fourth. When you lose two lottery picks from your team and you are still projected as the top 25% of your league, that’s saying something about what you have coming back. I think Edgar makes an all-bigeast team this year and Siva will fight for Freshman of the Year.

Marquette lost a lot

They have Hayward and Butler and not much else from last year. They have a JUCO who is supposed to be good, Bucks I think his name is.

Marquette did lose a lot

I think i was Dominque James that went down with an injury last year, and when he did they simply didn’t look like the same team.

I think Cincinnati is going to be top 5

I really like Vaughn and I buy the Stephenson hype. Plus, I like Mick. I think 4th is just about right for the Cards. I think Villanova is not the best team in the conference. I think West Virginia will win it. Say what you want about Huggins coached teams, but the only place they win is in the regular season. I would much rather talk about basketball hype than coach rumors and football.

Question?

Can anyone let me know what the previous 5 seasons UL was projected to finish in the Big East, and where they actually finished at?

by Final4Galore on Oct 21, 2009 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

I know last year

Last year we were co picked to finish at the top, and we finished at the top of the big east, and we won. I would guess we usually finish a little higher than we are picked. Our struggles are usually before conference play

thanks

I only ask because as you said, we usually finish better than what we are predicted and i wanted to see where we finished the last few years. If im not mistaken we have finished higher than predicted for several years now except maybe one year out of the last 5.
