The nervous pre-game calls are out of the way and now I'm in focus mode.

Let's get this, Marques.

An hour and a half to go

….I feel like “Dutch” is about to tape my hands for a heavyweight championship fight.

Let’s win this one!

This always pisses me off

Here I am, an old man, paying more than I should for friggin’ satellite TV and they, with all their technical wizardry, can’t switch this part of the country to the RIGHT DAMN GAME!
By God I wish Uncle Ed Kallay was still around. He’d help. Or maybe Randy and Cactus. (See, told you I was old. Only frankpos knows what I’m talking about and he’s at the damn game. I bet.)

no joke

no espn360 for me, this could take forever.

it’s not like we’re waiting to watch the start of a home game against the undefeated no. 1 team or anything.

You know

If we lose this game because Pitt shoots us out of the building, well then I can deal with that.

by Chris Redman is my hero on Jan 17, 2009 6:23 PM EST reply actions

it seems

that with us being in the zone, and the way pitt is moving the ball, part of the reason we get smoked on the boards is because we’re out of position when the shot goes up.

This is looking like a bad shooting night

Our record not so good on bad shooting nights.

What the hell

Terrence wasn’t even looking at the rim. I dunno, i don’t like the idea of the no-look alley oop. Annoying, that could have been a big play.

I'm worried we don't have the lead...

We’re undefeated when we’re leading at halftime.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 17, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions

Some good news...

…only three of their players have fewer than 2 fouls. That’s three total, not just starters. We really need to pound it inside with SS, Jennings, and T-Will/Sosa drives to draw fouls. Take the playmakers out of the game.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 17, 2009 7:10 PM EST reply actions

Anybody know

why Terrance Williams spent so much time on the bench at the end of the half? Does he have two fouls?

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 17, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions

So Pitt's happy with the score because Blair and Young sat most of the half

And I’m happy with the rebounding because T-Will sat most of the half. Could be happier with the score, but we just need to keep creating turnovers and getting more opportunities. We can still score more points with poor % (we’re shooting 30.3% right now FYI) if we can get a lot more shooting opportunities. I would rather us just have a UK shooting night though.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 17, 2009 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

hope it doesn't come back and bite us

but i can’t understand why we wouldn’t keep samuels in at the end there with blair and young out…with all the momentum at home and their best players in foul trouble, it was basically a big break for them to go in with the lead. didn’t keep track, did samardo have two as well?

by doctorofdunk on Jan 17, 2009 7:19 PM EST reply actions

We're lucky

to be this close, I suppose. Also thought bad Edgar reared his head in that first half. Oh, and somebody make sure Clark wakes from the nap he appeared to need during the halftime.

He’s had two good possessions in a row. I’m just saying, it’s kind of sad that he can’t bring this intensity all the time. If he were playing like that consistently, he and T-Will would be racking up the assists.

Sosa is confounding

in that the same guy who made the terrific look to Samuels for the tie made two of the lazliest passes of the year that resulted in scores at the other end. Coach Fran said something with which I agree (a first, by the way) Sosa’s the type of player who keeps both teams in the game.

so

we held blair to 10 boards and 9 points, fields to 8 points (he did have 8 assists) plus some TO’s, and young to 14 points on 6-20 shooting. after that hot start for them and our terrible start, i love how we played excellent defense to get back in the game and eventually win out. by sam34gtr on Jan 17, 2009 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Wow

Wow. Regression to the mean is an important thing. We shoot 1/9 from 3 in the first half, they shoot 7/10.

And if Earl shoots that shot (where he dribbles right, doesn’t realize the shot clock is about to expire, takes a fading shot from just inside the 3 point line) 10 times in 10 games, how many times does he swish it like that? 1? 2?

What a game. I can’t believe we won. We basically shut down Blair. Sam Young is good but I didn’t realize he only shot 6-20. Two of those were sick dunks so he really shot 4-18 on jumpers. I’ll take it.

Fields had 6 TOs. Wow.

Earl played terrible for the first 30 minutes, then did everything he needed to do to get the win.

We tried (with the refs help) to make it close at the end, with the foul on the rebound on our free throws, a random loose ball and-1 by Blair, “walk” where both of our players get the rebound, T-Will skying for a rebound, getting hit by two guys, falling, and getting a travel call, and then everyone’s favorite, the sosa turnover.

The refs? Two very close calls that went our way late – the ball off sosa on their end of the court and they gave it to us and then the fields push-off on sosa on the inbounds. Overall a frustrating game, with some weird calls.

Terrance Jennings stripping Fields at half court and going uncontested for a dunk?!?!? But T-Will and Earl 2-on-1 and they can’t score? If Will Scott and Juan Palacious could score 2-on-1 on Dante Greene (one of Mike’s funniest in-game posts ever, is there a less likely 2-on-1 to score than that?) then how can T-Will and Earl (and Sosa and T-will) not score on 2-on-1s???!?!? So frustrating.

3/4 from 3 from T-Will and Preston 3/5 from 3 (all in the second half).

And finally, the defense.

I can’t believe we won that game.

by CardsFan922 on Jan 17, 2009 9:17 PM EST reply actions

Believe it.

That just happened

This season is gonna shave ten years off my life.

by Irememberwheat! on Jan 17, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Officiating was not so great

Not just for us either. Pitt got some bad calls as well. Of course, reading the ESPN boards, PItt fans are thoroughly convinced that Pitt was robbed by the refs, but whatever.

But uneven officiating seems to be a trend this season in the Big East. It’s something we’re just going to have deal with.

In other news...

…I’m enjoying watching UNC lose at home to a very mediocre Miami team. Maybe this team is not all they thought they were. If they lose this game and continue to play poorly, they may just be the biggest disappointment of the season.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 17, 2009 9:38 PM EST reply actions

the miami coach

actually said that one of the problems of the first half was that they weren’t getting calls. i didn’t think coaches could be honest when doing halftime interviews? carolina seems a little off this year. they don’t seem that much better than last year.

by cardscott5 on Jan 17, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

Our D and , amazingly, our rebounding did it. We did a damn good job

on the boards.

And Samardo got Blair in foul trouble—just like Harangody the other night. Samardo is learning to draw the fouls from the other team’s big guys—which is huge.

I don’t know if the Hall was any louder tonight than for UK or Notre Dame—they were all awesomely LOUD games with the fans standing and screaming and urging the team on.

Just an amazing string of close wins over top -notch teams….

I am now pantless and drinking bourbon.

It was a terrific win,

especially when you consider that, really, we played pretty poorly in a lot of ways on the offensive end. Sosa? Good grief. But really, we may be the best damn defensive team in the whole wide world of college basketball. We will flat make you earn the overwhelming majority of your points. And that could take us a long, long way, though it’s still pretty early in a daunting Big East season to go overboard with anything.

We were lucky enough to get Notre Dame and Pitt at home. Syracuse may be the best team in the league right now, says Pitino. But whoo, hooo. Who cares, we’re 4-0.

1 pt combined from jerry and mcgee

just goes to show you that our depth really does do wonders for us in these kinds of games. we can have some key players have off nights offensively and get away with it, and several of the big east teams we’ve played thus far just can’t say the same (particularly tonight, with blair having a ho-hum outing and young going 6-20). hope the boys don’t look past lowly rutgers.

on an unrelated note, i noticed that michgan was wearing throwback unis (they’re now with adidas) from their 89 title team tonight. what do we need to do to make this happen for us? the thought of our team striding out there in the home jerseys we wore in the 80/86 seasons seems quite nice. who’s with me on this?

by frankpos on Jan 18, 2009 7:14 AM EST up reply actions

Pitt plays a notch better at MSG

but the key lately has been wearing other teams down with depth inside and out. When opposing guards get winded, presses and halfcourt defense get that much better for our guys. As long as they can hang around until midway thru the 2nd half, it becomes advantage UofL in the late stages. Only foul trouble puts this strategery (as Bush would say) in peril.
