Bad news early

Jim Burr AND Karl Hess will be patrolling the Freedom Hall sidelines this evening.

Harangody might get 40 from the stripe alone.

by Mike Rutherford on Jan 12, 2009 6:15 PM EST reply actions

Gonna be a physical game

Especially between Harangody and Samuels/Jennings. I’d like to see what Jennings can do against him defensively.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 7:13 PM EST reply actions

did you hear that?

E5… “right at the crew cut…”

priceless

by system24 on Jan 12, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions

I hate Digger Phelps.

He swings off Notre Dame’s and UConn’s nuts more than a monkey.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Also, why are they sitll nutswinging off Harangody?

He’s sweating like a stuck pig and T-Will has more points. He’s done not much over the last 6 or 7 minutes, including letting both Samuels and Clark dunk over him. Oh yeah, an Jennings was in the last 5 minutes of the game, and Luke had almost no points.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 8:02 PM EST reply actions

McAlarney

Apparently we decided defending him wasn’t important after the first 13 minutes.

by Mike Rutherford on Jan 12, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions

Can we play some defense?

It would be nice to see us kind of watch for McAlarney and Harangody… let Zeller try and beat you, for crap’s sake

by mabake02 on Jan 12, 2009 8:04 PM EST reply actions

It occurs to me...

that if we could shoot just a little bit, we’d have a double digit lead. Oh, and if we could realize second-half play has begun, we might stay within striking distance. Good grief guys.

Harongody

is a walking testimony to hard work. Much as I hate to say it. And if we’ve fallen in love with the three again, we’re doomed as doomed can be.

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 12, 2009 8:09 PM EST reply actions

That's why we should be going at it more.

You can’t get in a shoot-out with ND, because they’ll most likely win. Larney and Gody are shooting like 90% right now.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps

He has a new athletic product of some kind to offer for our perusal. You know, like a shoe, perhaps.

by mabake02 on Jan 12, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

Not pleased with our shot selection

Make Harangody work on defense and get tired by throwing it in to Samuels. This is not rocket science.

by mabake02 on Jan 12, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

we need to go back to running the offense and getting earl that shot at the elbow or free throw line.

by shadydaddy on Jan 12, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

God

Even when they do call the foul on Gody it screws us.

by Mike Rutherford on Jan 12, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

That's horrible

He doesn’t blow the whistle until he realizes Harangody lost the ball.

by Mike Rutherford on Jan 12, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

Helacious defense...

Absolutely helacious. Everybody’s playing it, too. McGee’s pressure on the ball is terrific and something I wish Mr. Sosa could do/would do. One more stop and perhaps we can get a little distance…

C'mon 'Dre

Really poor job of handling the momentum the right way.

by Mike Rutherford on Jan 12, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

agree

hit earl cutting down the lane for a dunk…then the house goes crazy

by shadydaddy on Jan 12, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Defense is really good now

But shot selection is starting to wane again…. figures.

Hey, Jennings blocked Gody. That may just be my favorite part of the second half (the Clark dunk over Gody being the favorite first half play).

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

I sure hope

those two empty trips come back to haunt us. Jennings has really quick feet, by the way, and seems to me to be much quicker off his feet that Samuels. Certainly not as skilled, but still, just an observation.

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 12, 2009 8:23 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely correct

He could be a better player than Samuels, but his basketball IQ is low. He’s quicker, taller, longer, and better on defense. He’s got a quicker release on offense too that can really help him on putbacks and nice moves against taller opponents (read: Thabeet). However, he doesn’t get himself in position like Samuels can. Samuels can really work himself around a defender to get the ball in the low post, which Jennings seems a bit apathetic to do. Also, they said that Pitino doesn’t like his off-schedule work ethic, as he doesn’t pay attention to scouting reports or read up on the competition, which could come back to hurt him.

But let’s be honest, to be getting this kind of performance from him defensively is a true asset, especially considering how many fouls Samuels has been/will be getting. He’s good on defense, which is a big help. The offense will come as Pitino works with him, but until then, we’ve got Clark and T-Will to clean up inside. Most of the time.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 13, 2009 8:36 AM EST up reply actions

McGee, please

Sosa obviously isn’t much interested in defending tonight. I mean, for gosh sakes, McAlarney is slower than I am. Well, anyway he’s slow. We ought to be able to keep him out of the lane.

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 12, 2009 8:27 PM EST reply actions

May have been

But McAlarney’s gotten into the lane twice, and once off a simple screen at the top that involved Smith and Sosa.

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 12, 2009 8:29 PM EST reply actions

I would almost rather have Jennings in right now.

Offense would suffer a bit, but he’s proven much more effective at stopping Harangody.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 8:35 PM EST reply actions

In the half court

we can’t score enough to hang with these guys. Helter skelter we do just fine. Running stuff for Clark ends up, if he misses, with no one on the off side to rebound for some reason. This is one we might piss away, I’m afraid. But a long time yet.

"How tall was Ellison"

2nd best line of the night behind:

“Someone needs to call a Timeout … so I can watch the Earl Clark dunk again”

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 9:06 PM EST reply actions

I wasn't much of a fan last season.

He seemed to be still holding a grudge over the ‘86 championship, and was down on Louisville a lot. But his analysis is usually spot on, and he’s pretty truthful about us this season, and sees the potential.

But yes, the “how tall was Ellison” comment was funny. I also liked the “I helped hang that 86 championship banner in this building.” I remember a game last year where he was talking about Louisville and said that Ellison was so hard to guard and there just wasn’t anything he could do.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 13, 2009 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

was that Boeheim?

in the shot for a second at the end of the game?

by system24 on Jan 12, 2009 9:09 PM EST reply actions

What a win, what a win

The pressure we put on the ball from beginning to end just took the legs right from under a very good team. Best win of the year — Jennings, McGee, the incomperable T-Will. Thanks to Bilas who said, time and time again tonight, that Terrance Williams was the best player on the floor. He was right.

theoldman

by theoldman on Jan 12, 2009 9:10 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, we had a few lapses

But even when ND was scoring, they were hitting some pretty amazing shots.

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think a lot of people will point to the fact that ND has been weak on the road this year, and forever at Freedom Hall.

But this wasn’t a bad night for them. They were scoring tons of points, contested or not. Harangody had 28 points, Larney had like 5 threes. But you can see where the depth of Louisville payed off. We didn’t have to have any players play a full 45 minutes like Larney and almost Gody.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

The contrast in the defense in our game

and what’s going on with OU v. Texas is amazing.

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 9:11 PM EST reply actions

Big 12 isn't usually very big on defense...

See: 30 point Oklahoma blowout by UofL in the tourney last season. Then again, we also blew out Tennessee right after that, but everybody sees just how tough the SEC really is this year…

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

Did you see the first half?

There wasn’t a ton of defense in the first half of our game, either… but not as bad as the Texas D right now.

by mabake02 on Jan 12, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but I thought our D

was pretty solid in the first half. Almost every Gody basket was me saying, “you can’t stop that one.” And Mac was hitting 25 footers.

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

While press was harder in the second half, especially from Dre, I thought the first half was pretty solid. Jennings especially had a good defensive game. I think we have proven now that Jennings is more of a defensive power than Samuels, but his offense is not quite as strong. If he could just learn to get himself into position stronger and quicker, he could be right up there, and the two would be nearly interchangeable.

But let’s face it, while about half of Harangody’s and McAlarney’s shots in the first half were far too open, the other half were well contested. But there’s no doubt that it was downright suffocating in the second half. Just look at the box score. Had our shot selection been better down the stretch, we would have won the game handily.

Clark's dunk?

Can someone describe or post a youtube clip for those of us who could only catch the last few minutes + Overtime?

by UL is my hot hot sex on Jan 12, 2009 9:24 PM EST reply actions

Just watch SC top ten plays if you can't see it on youtube, cause I'm sure it will be there.

But I’ll describe it to you. Clark started at the high post, right side (facing the basket). He had Gody and the other F (Hillesland or w/e his name is) in front of him, as well as Larney I believe. He drove down the left low post past all of them and dunked over Gody while Gody clearly fouled him (his forearm hit Clark in the face), but it wasn’t called. It was a really strong two-handed dunk over Gody in the air, which was followed by the signature Clark mad face.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

My description:

Clark taking his usual glide to the left side of the basket and preparing to take his usual floating bank. And then all of a sudden it was dunk. And hard.

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Mike....You give and you give and you give....

Incidentally, that play was exactly how 83fan described it. Clark strolling through the lane to throw up a ho-hum floater off the square and then he channeled Alvin Sims with the two-handed crewcut facial.

When twill made that “game winning” dunk I definitely grabbed the old man stranger sitting to my right and starting jumping up and down. true story. What a game!

by jbrobe04 on Jan 12, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

Def should have been the game winning dunk.

Replay showed clearly that Williams touched the ball first.

Either way, had we won that way, we wouldn’t have had the satisfaction of killing them 16-2 in OT and seeing Harangody foul out about 20 minutes later than he should have.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 12, 2009 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

OMG

I’ve never heard Freedom Hall as loud as when TWill hit that dunk. For those watching at home, should it have counted? I thought they stopped the clock before he dunked, so that if he had gone free he would have not gotten the dunk off in time?

Anyway, Earl’s dunk was unreal. I really wish I could have heard Bilas and Raftery talking about that afterwards.

What a game. When SS got his 4th foul, putting them in the bonus, and we were down like 3-4 points, I thought it was over. We couldn’t rely on 3 point shooting and they were going to spend the rest of the game at the line, is what I thought.

Then Pitino switched to man-to-man, Knowles prevented McA from getting any more shots off, McGee ate up Jackson, and the rest is history.

What a game. Wow.

by CardsFan922 on Jan 12, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions

would not have counted

He touched the ball with between 0.8 and 1.0 seconds on the clock, then took about 5 steps and dunked. If the refs viewed the play as T-Will touching it first, then they should’ve called him for a travel prior to/as the clock ran out. If they viewed it as T-Will touching it first AND ignored the travel, there’s no way he would’ve got it off before the horn/red backboard thingy.

Would’ve been a f’in sweet way to win a basketball game though, especially a hard fought game like this one, particularly by Terrence Williams.

by UL is my hot hot sex on Jan 12, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

Surely you DVRed it so you can see.

I think TWill beat Gody to the ball, and I think he might have put it down in time. Would have had about 1.0 seconds.

by 83fan on Jan 12, 2009 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

unfortunately....

I won’t be home for a few months so I couldn’t DVR it, but the 6 replays they showed were pretty obvious—TWill took 4-5 steps w/o dribbling and touched it with between .08 and 1.0 left on the clock. So even if they ignored the travel, I’m not sure it’s possible to go 26 feet and dunk in less than a second.

by UL is my hot hot sex on Jan 12, 2009 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

You mean the ND player who threw the ball across the court at the basket before the buzzer?

Or did you shoot a shot during halftime break? If it’s the latter, then no, as ESPN does halftime coverage in the studio.

I wanted to get an IS300 when I was car shopping, but the budget didn’t permit, and I couldn’t find a decent one with a 5spd.

Amen to that.....

for TWill to play for 43 minutes at that pace – wow. He must be in fantastic shape. We just got home from the game and I am exhausted from screaming my head off. Bad call taking away TWill’s dunk/points with :06 to go in regulation play but that seem to ignite the team. I haven’t see that kind of defense since Denny was coach – awesome, awesome, awesome. There was a yUK fan sitting behind me and she was all giggly especially when ND went up. During the OT when we started our run, she left…..huh! What a surprise and what a great win for our program. I sure hope Pitt doesn’t look past SF and comes in here Saturday as No. 1. I can’t see SF being able to play with them much less beat them but you never know. If Pitt comes in here No. 1, Freedom Hall will rock again. If we play as well as we played tonight, we can play with ANYBODY in the country. Whew, What a game. Go CARDS!
