Five Quick Thoughts

Star-divide

I don't have the energy or heart to do a full write-up of this game.  This sucks so bad right now.  But I do have 5 overarching thoughts on this game and What It Means for UofL football.

1) Vic and Doug are awesome.  I love those guys.  I think it is going to make you uncomfortable if I keep describing how I feel about them, so I'm going to stop.

2) Kragthorpe is a terrible game manager.  Cantwell should not have been back out there, we were 0-3 on 4th downs and did not attempt 1 FG, Wolfe comes in and hands the ball off 5 times and gets his first throw on a tough 3rd down on a quick-slant timing play....we get that fumble recovery on the ~33 and run to the left with Bolen instead of taking a shot at the endzone (then 2 plays later cantwell hurts himself), the WRs not lining up right in the hurry up offense....huge penalities on 3rd downs to keep UConn's drive alive.....every little thing that made the difference between a HUGE W and a TERRIBLE L went against us it seemed and that's the HC more than the players.  We had a clean shot at a BCS bowl with a win tonight, as crazy as that sounds.   We were dominating them and should have won this game going away.

3) Other than our awesome frosh/soph WRs and RBs, the future is not looking bright with "krags players" -- so many of our best guys are seniors and if Wolfe is as bad as it would seem from Krag's decisions and that one awful pass....I'm afraid success this season would be a mirage against a weak OOC and terrible Big East group of teams and the last crop of Petrino Srs carrying us. I hate to be negative but where does our medium- or long-term confidence come from?

4) It feels good to hurt this bad after a loss again -- after the UK game and pretty much every game last year it was just apathy and resignation.  But, see #3.

5) Thank goodness for basketball season.

cantwell

hunter cantwell is terrible. Seriously, how hard was the read that he threw the interception on. Oh my reciever is obviously covered and theres a wide open defender who will be right in front of him. Cantwell has an amazing ability to find wide open defenders when the game is on the line.

why

keep going to Chichester? I mean I understand he is you biggest target… but after consecutive passes the DB will start to jump that little comeback route…

Should have checked DB or VA across the middle and let them dodge some people…

But if it weren’t for the little things we would all be saying how good we were last night.

anyone see the play....

where Cantwell was going deep. Keep looking at Chichester and threw it too him in double coverage. All the while Brock was right next the cardinal side lines about 30 yards from the LOS and about 30 yards away from any defender. It would have been an automatic 6.

I don’t think Cantwell is bad he is just not as developed as Brohm was. I find that Cantwell does not progress in his reads. He becomes fixed on one side of the field or one receiver.

Like I said in the main thread by Mike, I still blame this loss on our lack of kicking game. The INT did not help, but not being able to put up the 3 points when inside the 30 really hurt us.

yea i think

every pass play coming out of the huddle Hunter knows who the ball is going to regardless… maybe he’ll check to the 2nd option…

My 2-cents

According to an article by Michael McCammon in InsidetheVille on Feb 3, 2006, Petrino and Brohm were both very high on Tyler Wolfe. They called him intelligent, good passer, a “student of the game”. They were excited to land him and were sure he would be a quality player after he gained some weight.

This year he beat out two other QBs to be the backup to Hunter. Now when he gets the chance he only gets one series to do anything and then he’s replaced by an injured Cantwell. WTF happened to make Wolfe such a poor backup. IMHO it is coaching.

As for Cantwell not being able to look off his receivers, I have to agree that it is due to a lack of experience and development. Hunter really has had no time to play to get better. He will be better by season’s end, but then it will be late for him and the team.

Assuming Simms is the starting QB next season, it might be better to get him some experience this year so he doesn’t have to come cold.

Time was, a win was WIN, now it's just a win.

i have no hand on experience....

but from what other have told me….if Simms is the one who we are looking to lead the team next year, we are in big trouble.

Anyone seen him play much? Practices and such?

Haven't seen or heard anything about...

Simms or any other QB (except Cantwell) since it was announced that Simms would be suspended for 4 games.

Prior to that that I heard that he has a really weird throwing motion, but that he is accurrate and mobile, with good timing and speed. Kinda like his dad with a twist.

Not sure how he’ll stack up against Zack Stoudt, but he is a year older and has a better pedigree.

Jack Elway

wish we could have landed THAT son of a hall of famer…

but we got the Simms kid… but again… I am an ELWAY fan… more so than Simms… John-vs-Phil…

Well...

I hear Simms has a side-armed throwing motion. Not too good for NFL but has proven successful in college (Colt Brennan had the ugliest throwing motion in college last year).

Also, what is up with Hunter’s hitch. I am sick of him dropping the ball down to around his hip with his throwing motion, and we wonder why he fumbles/gets the ball knocked out of his hands…a 3 ft 2 in DE could make him fumble. That last INT was obviously a check-down, but the real question is why was he throwing?

Play calling in the 4th Q sucked. I have no idea why we run it up the middle 5 times in a row, when V.A. is getting around the corners all day long. You could obviously tell Hunter had no zip on the ball especially when he can’t post on his back foot, so lobbing a duck over the middle with the game on the line is a great idea.

I was so encouraged to see the fans get excited before this game, like we where turnign the corner, and then this happens. Wow.
