As someone who has spent the summer in Pittsburgh
I wouldn’t be so quick to blame the players. The Pirates as well as Pittsburgh in general bring out strange emotions in people. Pre-prohibition drinking laws do strange things to a city, I think.

Don't make excuses
I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for over a year now having moved from Louisville where I was born. While it’s not as easy to buy a 6pack/12 pack/ case of beer outside of the stadiums, it’s just as easy as anywhere in the country to buy a beer during a baseball game or Steelers game (although you can’t buy beer at Heinz Field during Pitt games). And yes, the Pirated do suck (not a baseball fan myself), but everyone else seems to get along just fine with a crappy team and beer. There isn’t an issue with normal people hitting cops. All the blame is on the players. And Huggy Bear.

Good Point
I was really just kidding about the weirdness that is Pittsburgh, but obviously there’s no excuse for getting into a fistfight at a baseball game, especially the Rockies v. Pirates. Honestly, there’s really no excuse for even being at a Rockies/Pirates game. At least they bought their own beer, though. Apparently their neighbors to the east operate under slightly different rules.
