Student Section Name

We are currently developing a rebranding of the student section for this coming year, with a focus on unity and intensified spirit. The name will be used to signify students at all U of L sporting events.

I seek your suggestions on a name for the new section. We have developed a list already, but I would like to get more ideas. While students will ultimately vote on the name come August, I think alumni and die hards are full of great idea and love the idea of living vicariously through the drunken 20 year olds.

Any other ideas on how to incite student spirit would be greatly appreciated as well.

Potential Names

I want to let the CardChronicle community start from a clean slate. I’ll let you know some of our top prospects once other people get the opportunity to voice their opinion.

Don’t want to put anyone in a box.

L-Raisers

The athletic department made the decision that they wanted a more unified section that didn’t take membership to be a part of. The easiest comparison is to the eRUPPtion Zone at UK or even the Crunch Zone, where all students at the game in that section are a part of it. The L-Raisers were great in developing a select group of passionate and die hard students, but there was a riff created among the student body that was hindering the spirit at games.

Sounds silly, but that is just how it worked.

by tmjoel01 on Jun 20, 2008 10:17 AM EDT   0 recs

Why not just keep the name

and make everyone a L Raiser?

i don’t understand politics like this…

Politics?

Did anybody say, “politics?’ Ahem.

how about the Freddies....

billed to other teams as “your worst nightmare”. Ok, OK I know….Ii hear the groans. I LOVE the L Raisers. I hope that the students will be closer to the floor in the new arena (as in ON the floor). I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Let's just hope

that in the new arena, the students section isn’t in New Albany.

To answer frankpos question

When the L-Raisers were developed the atheltic department did not take full advantage of the opportunity. Now, fully committed to developing student spirit, the athletic department is prepared to offer students a number of exclusive opportunities. That is not to say that student spirit has not always been important, but it has quickly become a priority with a stadium expansion, new arena and growing success in Olympic sports.

For better or worse, the L-Raisers have a stigma around them and the athletic department wanted to work from a completely clean slate. To clarify, the L-Raisers are an independent student organization and are not directly affiliated with the athletic department.

You should be seeing a lot of creativity from the students in years to come, as they will now have a lot more resources to work with. The Rutgers basketball game, which was themed 80s for the students, was a taste of what you can expect to see in the future.

Really everyone is prepared to have our student support match the success of the students on the field.

by tmjoel01 on Jun 20, 2008 7:32 PM EDT   0 recs

So... in other words, U of L doesn't own the name and trademark?

What is this “stigma” that can never be erased?

Why is U of L fighting with the L Raisers now?

by frankpos on Jun 21, 2008 9:09 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I really don't understand

since the first 10 rows of Freedom Hall have been taken up and sold to non-students. Every year the student section gets smaller. At PJCS, you barely even notice them.

I would also expect the prime seats in the lower bowl of the new arena to be sold to non-students as well.

by xjjeep90 on Jun 20, 2008 10:32 PM EDT   0 recs

That's exactly

What I’m talkin’ about….and I don’t suspect it will be better in the new place, with the closest students perched upon a giraffe at the Louisville Zoo to get an unobstructed view. Meantime the administration’s salve for this future injustice is to rename the small cadre…why? So ESPN can have a handle for them…and reduce them to a common denominator, a al Cameron Crazies?!....Why bother? Such a mystery achievement. Instead, I say, let’s have a movement where the matriculating students can at least have a shot at some good seats.

...Man, is my naivete showing, or what?

OK, tell me again WHY the name L Raiser name itself

can’t be used?

Must we kill the existing L Raisers first (if so…) ?

or has it morphed into some geo-political terrorist group

that the University is currently fighting with napalm or the such?

Why can’t the F-ing name be appropriated and used?

The Nest

I like most of the other suggestions better…just figured I’d throw that out there….

by ddh1969 on Jun 21, 2008 10:32 AM EDT   0 recs

The answer is in the numbers

Right now there are 2300 students that have student tickets and there are even more that try to get them. I was an RA this past year and I can tell you U of L is now getting to the point where students are considering coming here from out of state solely because they know we have a strong athletic programs. As we all know athletics has put U of L on a national stage.

This leads me to the point that we have students who are intensely passionate about Cardinal athletics. Yet with such high numbers the current spirit group has less than 50 people showing up at their meetings by the end of the year. As I understand it, hundreds of students sign up at orientation and they are unable to retain them.

I fully support everything the L-Raisers have done, and love their unparalleled commitment to U of L athletics. However, we are at the point of expansion, and to better reach the hundreds of students who have made the decision to not be a part of the current organization a change in names is necessary.

Personally, I would love for ESPN to “have a handle over” this new organization. Like Mike said, the publicity is priceless. And to touch on Mike’s post, if the group were to be named based off of Rick it would clearly be called ‘The Rick Rollers’

Here are two examples of what could be:

Iowa State

Georgetown

Ville-ans

Student Section Name

I feel like the name is not the problem its our fans…......We need to act like we cant wait for the game. We sit, we eat, we talk during the game and not act like we even care what happens. Yes….....we cheer when there is a dunk or power play but we are not ignited to be there. My votes for student section is 1)Cardiac Cards 2) Die Hard Cards 3) CardinalNation. Real fans unite and lets everyone get on board and raise the level of excitement in the Best City for College Sports on the planet!!

"Cardiacs"

“Ville-ans”

my two favs so far…

(But I’m kinda liking the Cardiacs a little better_

by frankpos on Jun 22, 2008 10:42 AM EDT   0 recs

Not just because...

Mr Blunt came up with it but I DO like the CARDIACS.....tells the story all too well and holds to the Cardiac Cards that’s been around a long time. I also like the Ville-ans and maybe just the VILLES.

by Linda on Jun 22, 2008 10:58 AM EDT   0 recs

Excuse me for going wax poetic but think we are trying to roll shit up hill with this.

I have thought about this for a little bit and nothing seems lend itself to a useful rebranding using the "Cardinal" as the ethos of the section.
As much as we love the Cardinal the bird and the mascot, it’s just not an intimidating noun. If this is to be successful I think the name would have to be pulled from another part of the school.

by Blocky on Jun 22, 2008 2:48 PM EDT   0 recs

You Want An Unintimidating Nickname, Blocky?

...try this on for size: “The Asheville Tourists,” a Class A minor league baseball team. Are you scared? Shaking yet? I think their equally intimidating logo is a picture of a suitcase with a couple of stickers on it to show that they have “traveled .”

I think you are ...

on to something. Now, give us a good example….

by Linda on Jun 22, 2008 3:06 PM EDT   0 recs

My personal favorite

The name that I like the most is ‘The VILLEage’

I think it has a lot of flexibility, a good ring and lends its self to a lot of puns. Most importantly I think it incorporates the unity theme that is looking to be developed.

Plus for anyone that was at the Pack the House game against UConn, you know how great an arena of Cardinal Fans singing the village people could be. I would love to see an in-house version created for men’s basketball games with C-R-U-M, because I love the ideas of incorporating Crum into as many areas as possible.

Everyone knows Cardinal fans love to spell things out

by tmjoel01 on Jun 22, 2008 3:18 PM EDT   0 recs

I like that too....

and, as you say, it has so many possibilities and could lead to some newer cheers with more fan involvement. I like it. Thanks (I agree about incorporating Denny into some areas of recognition and Lord knows he earned that) But I’d never want Rick to feel left out – he be the du now. ‘o)

The Red C

I think about 10 years ago there was a push to call the student section the Red C does anyone remember this? I still think it is a good name

I don't remember....

The VILLEage
The VILLE-ans
The L Raisers (a classic)
The BIRD gang
The RED C

Villeage

by Linda on Jun 22, 2008 6:14 PM EDT   0 recs

The Villeage is "nice" but bland

yeah, Villeage People

I got tired of that 10 yrs ago

by frankpos on Jun 22, 2008 8:21 PM EDT   0 recs

I got it.

Lets take it in another direction. Kinda like my name you can change “Cards” in to “playing cards” and play off that. I propose to name student section “The FULL House”
Think about it… a full house is a pair plus threee of a kind. 3 Guards, 2 Post players. Thats a full house to me.

But I still win cause “Im All In with my Cards”

Plus we could nickname the new arena “THe House”
the House never loses. We don’t lose at home.

Student section

I’ve always wanted to open a diner near the U of L campus (or maybe near the new arena?) and call it “Diner De Ville,” to play on the nickname one of our teams ( ‘80?) gave us years ago. My diner would have 59 Cadillac tail fins on each side of it’s entrance, and all the employees would wear sweater-like tops with the letter “L” on them.

Anyway, I don’t have any money to open a diner but perhaps we could incorporate (as others have above” the whole de Ville-Cadillac-team-name thing into the student section. Each year the name would change to reflect the year — the ‘08 de Villes? Or something. Pretty lame, I know, but it’s early and I’m old.

And That's What They Really Cost Now

Would your diner have….Five dollar vanilla milk shakes?

Stacked?

I don’t think that word is used anymore. We’ve got to remember that, whilst we may be old, we are talking about the STUDENT section. It has to be something for the younger fans….the Red C is hip don’t you think? Really?

OK, TMJOE101...

is it time for you to reveal some of the suggestions on the list you had when this madness started?

by Linda on Jun 26, 2008 10:39 AM EDT   0 recs

I think you got them all

We have a committee of students representing the different facets of campus helping iron out the details of this group. Our list of five before this post was..

The Villeage
The Red C
Red Rage
The Nest
The Red Army

Its been amazing to see how supportive everyone is of all spirit initiatives. I like a lot of the names that came out of this, in particular CARDiacs

I will actually be acting as student athletic director next year through student government. Aubrun came calling for me, but my free printing duties got extended and I will have a nifty name tag for staying committed to U of L. If anyone has any specific suggestions or questions please feel free to contact me by e-mail at tmjoel01@louisville.edu.

Maybe in a month or so I will rehatch the topic and we can discuss themes for games and other ideas.

Thanks for all the posts though, the CardChronicle community really came together on this one.
