Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

I BLAME ALL OF YOU

This is the most disappointed I've been all season. More than Dayton, more than Purdue, more than Seton Hall, and certainly more than Georgetown. We didn't play smart and we got absolutely bullied around in the paint, which should never happen. To be honest, we were lucky to push the game into overtime.

And now we get to sit around with this bad taste in our collective mouth while everyone else plays for the next three days.

Don't talk to me.

Don't blame Me!!!!!
I voted for the gyrating go Cards.  What else can you say?  They just played like crap basically.
I'm buying a new house and dedicating a room to louisville....and the tennessee titans.

I like the drawing.
Nice ponytail, Mike.  I think it was that kind of pansyness (or fruityness) that got us chewed up in the paint.  They played the previous day, but our guys (some of them) are the ones that looked tired.  I hate being negative, so I'll end with GOOD GAME EARL & JUAN!

Don't blame the baby!
Its not her fault! From what I read, nothing could save the Cards tonight.

First game exits really suck. But remember; you lost this game, and you're still in the tournament. Not the same can be said (confidently) for my ballclub.

Let's hope the Cards takes this loss personal and come out pissed in 7-8 days.

OH GOD
That was awful.

Now we have to wait 3 days to hear about our 4 seed in UNC's region with BYU as the 5, and then wait another 5 days to try to get this game out of our system.

I don't understand where the team we watched for the last 2 months is?

And Jerry and T-will -- they only buy pump fakes on 3's if they really think you're going to shoot them.

Jerry Smith hitting 3's is the difference between us being the 1-seed playing on Friday in BEAST tourney and going to the final four.....and this.

Two in a row
I'm afraid the 'Ville may have peaked too early.

Late in this game, there was no leader who took this game over and/or put this team on his back.  Couple that with bad foul shooting, and they are looking like a very marginal tournament ready team.

Plus, and you cannot deny this, Blair owned the paint and Padgett, T-will couldn't finish as he has been, and our lack of consistent guard play was a killer.  Pitt is a very average tournament team who just beat us for the third straight year when it really counted at MSG.

Good grief.

by BR on Mar 13, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

Observations
-- Pitt played really well.  When Padgett got the ball inside, it seemed like there were 6 defenders on the court.  Usually, it's a virtually indefensible move as a double-team results in a 3 and one-on-one results in a basket.

-- I don't like the fact that we have guys in a funk.  Smith has been playing really poorly.  I'd like to see his shooting percentages home vs away.

-- Knowles is the most amazing on-ball defender I have ever seen.  Truly.  In-your-face defense and quick hands.

-- Did you notice the time that McGee cut to the basket on a fast break and everyone in the arena knew it was gonna get blocked?  Why does McGee cut to the basket on a fast break but T-Will never does?

-- Palacios dribbling the ball with any forward momentum is an absolute trainwreck.

-- It seemed like not one single drive by Williams resulted in a single point.  For some reason, he doesn't draw fouls (or make runners).

-- How frustrating was that stretch when Pitt couldn't miss a shot?

-- They kept showing statistics that Sam Young was currently shooting 6/17 from the field.  Did it seem to anyone else that he was about 10/12 from the field -- all 16-footers?

-- Celebrity sightings:  Taquan Dean, Dave Wanstedt, Steve Kerr.

-- I don't like the downward vibe going on right now with weird substitutions by Pitino:  Williams on the bench at key times, McGee/Sosa and a weird one in which Caracter was on the court with like 2-3 minutes left.

-- I can't see it that closely, but it seems like in both the Georgetown and Pitt games that Clark has a layup impaired in a way which HAS to be a foul -- somehow they're not calling it.

-- Pitt "Travis Diener"-ed UofL about 15 times in which they dribbled up the court leaning into the defender (whose hands are up in the air as if to signal "not me") ultimately drawing a foul.

-- My 6:00am flight to NYC for the weekend tomorrow hangs in serious doubt....

tough loss
whats there to say , it sucks.
i dont want to sound like an optimist, but this loss may have helped the cards, and me too.
we will take a 4 or 5 seed. win the first one and then bring on the 4 or 5( depending if we are a 4 or 5 also). then we can take on memphis, unc, or ucla. lets get this over with. im so pissed now, as are the cards im sure, that i want the toughest road possible. we play better when we are road dogs.
you heard it here first.

Peaked too early
And what a surprise, sPintino is gonna let the Cards fold again!

Why doesn't everyone else see it?

-Year after year of constant lies! Why does he treat us, the fans, like we're idiots?

-Year after year of consistent underachievement. Let's take a look:

In his last seven years as Louisville's head coach, Denny Crum went to two sweet sixteens. In his first seven years as Louisville's head coach, Rick sPintino has gone to one. And don't give me crap about how it was a final four; Denny would've had a final four if Dejuan hadn't been hurt. So why did we fire that guy for this one again?

Let's face it, the Cards will be out before the first weekend of the tournament, and I'm certain the only answer is poor talent management. We need a new coach, and badly. Rick lies out his ass, and you're all sucker enough to stay on the bandwagon. Anyone with any sense will recognize that the time is now:

FIRE PITINO!

You're not too smart, are you?
And you might want to reconsider that FF Denny "would have had."  Final score was 97 - 74.

Fire Pitino?! Freakin idiots
Wow captain jackass, you are amazing.  If we still had Crum we would be nowhere, with no good players; the game had passed him by.  This is coming from a guy who gave an A speech on why Crum should've been allowed to finish out his contract, and thought it was insane that Pitino would be our coach two months before it happened.  I still adore Crum, but your comments are making us look like thankless UK fans.  Thanks d-bag.

Go away, idiot
Sheesh...  I like to "hang out" here to avoid your types, every forum is completely full of idiots and apparently it's spreading.

not yet
I've stalked this blog for awhile now and somehow it really has avoided most of the poorly educated fanatical comments of folks who think lose and loose are the same word.

Davidson's negative opinion of Pitino, if valid and not just a sophomoric attempt to rile red feathers, I can handle but it's the laughable demand that he should be fired right away that is just silly.

But the comments implying that Davidson's comments are "making us look like 'thankless UK fans'" is just as irresponsible though...you can't stereotype UK fans while you're attempting to call someone out...we're better than that! ha.

I'm as disappointed as everybody else
So many concerns were raised by this game, I don't know what to think about our tourney chances now. Christ, how many wakeup calls do they need this season, anyway? Yeah, the Cards played sloppy ball tonight, but I just didn't see any real FIRE from the team. I saw that fire from Pitt; they just wanted to win this game more than us.

Maybe this was a complete aberration by our team; or maybe we're all doomed. I'm just glad we won't have to play a Big East team in the first round of the tournament.

One final thought: I hope both teams realize that the refs in the tourney are gonna call the kind of physical game we saw tonight a helluva lot closer than this.

by louisville lisa on Mar 13, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

did you draw that?
Perfect spot of color. Perfect pout on the girl.
Maybe I'm not yet crushed, but if I were, that drawring would have summed things up nicely.

But consider: you could be stuck in NYC for three days with BET tickets and $12 beers that will never get you drunk enough to forget. My heart goes out to that guy.
God bless the traveling fan! And God bless the Cards!

In NYC
Hey its not that bad here!

Tickets up in section 400 were only $350 and hotels in Manhatten are very affordable.  Oh, and the beers are only $7.75

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll be able to scalp those Marquette and WV tickets for a bunch.  Except for the fact that UConn and ND probably had more fans than any other two teams.  Blah!

Can anybody count how many close games UofL has one this year?  My count is zero.  If any win was close, it was because we were up 20 then couldnt make a freethrow down the stretch.  I'm scared about this team in the tourney, because I have zero confidence that when we have the ball in the last possession down 1 we can get it done.  At least we managed to send this one to OT.

I am rambling and really pissed off.  And $1000 poorer than I was last week.

Yikes
Not good.

Positives:
Earl. DC.  Preston.  Earl again.  That's it.

Negatives:

Jerry.  Not just his shooting, but bad passes and out of sync.  And still those dumb fouls.

David and TWill.  Our All-Big East performers absolutely disappeared tonight (second game in a row for David), while Sam Young showed up big.

Biting on pump fakes.

Toughness.

Smart decisions down the stretch.  It was nice to force overtime, but we absolutely blew the first 3 or 4 possessions while giving them easy baskets and free throws.

by 83fan on Mar 13, 2008 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

and on top of all that
the most outstanding problem I see is that we perform better as underdogs. Problem = solved.

Mind EFFFFFFFFFFFD
It hurts.

We got nothing from the backcourt.  You knew we didn't have a good chance of winning when you observed that Jerry's confidence is so shot and he is so mind effd that he not only did not seem to want the ball in crucial situations, it actually seemed that he was hoping that he WOULDN'T get a shot, that he was running away from any opportunity.  This is concerning.

by Roz on Mar 13, 2008 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

LOL
The fact that you all think I'm an idiot just proves to me that you're the sheep I think you are. Go ahead and swallow sPintino's excuses just like you have every batch of Kool-Aid that the guy's served up on a weekly basis since he's been here. Personally, I'll look at the results. And the results are clear:

Denny Crum's Last 7 Years: 2 Sweet Sixteens
Rick sPintino's First 7: Just 1.

He's washed up, folks. Why we fired Denny to bring this guy in is beyond me - at least Denny got us past the first weekend on a semi-regular basis. Can't exactly say the same for Rick! Just what makes you so eager to keep him around?

An average NCAA tournament seed of 6.5 (in the years he makes it, that is)?
A consistent peak-too-early followed by the all too predictable fold-when-it-counts?
The fact that he's had more recruits transfer away than NCAA tournament victories?
His propensity to lie to the media (and thus the fan base) at any given opportunity?
His quickness to blame anyone else - the players, the fans, the opposing team - when those lies are uncovered?
Or was it that "one shining moment" when we actually overachieved and hit the final four, which even Rick admitted was "ahead of schedule?" I guess even blind squirrels find nuts, and I'd really like to know if Rick's "schedule" involved us collapsing every March right on cue.

You see, he's done very little to merit your support. In fact, when you stack all the evidence up, his tenure here has been decidedly mediocre. The recruiting's been terrible, the execution poor, and the prominent collapses on the national stage plentiful. Essentially, it comes down to 2 words:

FIRE PITINO!

I'm as die-hard a Cards fan as anybody, but I ceased being a sPintino fan a long time ago (say, the year we went to the NIT 9 months after Rick told us we'd "never" drop outside the top 20 again...I guess he got the words "drop out of" confused with "be in"). And because he's at the helm, I'll have us losing first or second round in my bracket (depending on the matchup) just like every year at the Ville. But hey, at least we have football season! Or are you all so dedicated to Kragthorpe that you think he should get a decade to prove he's not a clown?

by davidson07 on Mar 14, 2008 10:16 AM EDT reply actions

Wow
Thats all I can really say.  Ok - say you "fire Pitino", who on earth would you rather have in his place.  I think Pitino has made Louisville a serious basketball team.  Opponents take a match up with Louisville seriously.  In my opinion, that was not the case before.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Mar 14, 2008 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

who...
  1. Denny. All we've done with Rick is get the same results but looked 10x more foolish in the process.
  2. Does it matter? I don't know if you have a job or if you're a student, but let's say you're a CEO of a company. Now let's say you promise big results, but every year come up short - WAAAAAYYY short - of those results all while lying to your employees and customers on a regular basis. Does the board not fire you because they don't have a candidate picked out to replace you? No, they send you packing. Which is what we should do with Rick as soon as he's lost in the first or second game of the tourney (like always) this year. We'll have plenty of time to find his replacement in the offseason.

by davidson07 on Mar 14, 2008 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

What is your point all this?
You are making outlandish and baseless statements using perhaps the worst comparative statistic imaginable (Sweet Sixteen appearances). I could refute your statement with simple questions like: who would you think do a better job?, would you like Denny to coach us again? Or can you find any better fact than "The fact that he's had more recruits transfer away than NCAA tournament victories?"

But I will stop there, as I have belief in the heavy burden of using relevant facts when arguing and not arguing with an idiot. As they will only drag you down to their level, and beat you from experience.

by Blocky on Mar 14, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Baa Baa
I figured you would trot out this tired old stale routine after we lost because you are utterly predictable. You disappear when the team wins, and show up like a canker sore when we lose. That's mighty big of you, sunshine.

I may be a sheep, but at least I'm not a pathetic joke.
