Open Thread: Louisville at Rutgers
Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Dec 4, 2008 7:30 PM EST
I want this .500 record, I need this .500 record.
There should be plenty to talk about tonight, regardless of what goes down.
Go Cards.

I Love The 80's?
Why does it feel like the 80’s all over again?
Overall a pretty good start...
… for Rutgers. If Krag’s still the coach in a week, I’ll be sad. If English is gone too, I’ll cry.
I don't think that's definitive enough...
…..to make me get down yet.
Too many “friends of friends” — even IRL not just on ITV — are saying it.
His point is good
You don’t leave without another job lined up. He’s had 2 bad seasons, to resign now would be a really bad career move.
When he caught the ball on the 7 with green in front of him....
….I said “touchdown!!”
I spoke too soon.
Season in a 6’8’’ nutshell.
Our secondary is hurting
It sucks not having hardly any of your starting corners.
And Johnny Patrick’s missed interception just made me cry.
I see no heart out there
On that really intense run stop, only one Card got pumped. Everybody else just stood around waiting.
maybe they sandbagging
to get rid of Krag? I wouldnt hope so, but it really looks like they are not playing even 75%
-Dustin
We do have a good player
Which is nice.
by Mike Rutherford on Dec 4, 2008 8:13 PM EST up reply actions
or if powell would just run
he always just freezes up if the hole does not open when he gets the ball.
He is deadly in the open field, but between the tackles….
-Dustin
At least there's basketba-
…..wait.
Naw, seriously though, the basketball team will turn it around.
By the Spring Game, we will be happy fans for both our basketball and football programs. Mark it down.
There are more Cats fans blogging about this game
on a UK site than there are on any Cardinal site right now.
"A little bit behind him....
…and a little hard"
Sums up Cantwell’s season.
WRs and Cantwell equally at fault for almost all missed balls this year.
What a dirty hit!
Glad he got a penalty, but the Rutgers D-lineman’s hit on Hunter’s knee is exactly the kind of hit NFL players get fined for. It would be deserving to see him suspended, although it will never happen.
The Switch
HANDS DOWN the best episode.
“Do you ever get down on your knees and thank GOD that you know me, and have access to my dementia?”
"We're turning it up a notch."
Where George lies about having a house in the Hamptons. The best.
4th and 1
Let’s start our move to the line of scrimmage six yards deep.
The time to start making jokes is upon us.
English does not deserve this.
As much as I would hate it, I would not blame him for leaving.
-Dustin
Ya don't get the English love....
….I guess we have no idea how bad it COULD be with a worse DC.
And they have been decimated by injuries. Graves just abused the LB on that TD.
I was laughing during the “Vaughn catches the ball for a 1st down then falls backwards then we pitch it and lose 5 yards on 4th and 1” chain of events.
at least a few guys are still fighting
anderson is playing hard, eric wood (aka kid from bad santa) is still pushing people around, earl playing hard
Look for....
“The Travis Norton Rule” to come into effect next year — no tackling by the hair. That’s pretty dangerous.
Although I guess the suits at the NCAA would rather just ban that hairstyle as scaring off “the casual fan” turned off by too many “urban” players.
already ruled a few years ago
that its legal to tackle by hair. its not part of the uniform so its legal
I know that Koach
always has a stupid, blank look on his face but tonight he looks like he’d done….I can’t explain it but I think he’s gone – I personally hope he goes and never comes back – not for Derby, not for anything. just go.
like I said, he does not deserve this.
The team has just given up.
On that note I still love Vic. He is giving all he has. I would still vote for him for pres :)
-Dustin
He is a warrior....
they keep going to him though and he WILL get hurt – silly for that to happen in such a crummy game.
the transfer from NC State is suppose to be the starter.
At least that is what I have heard. That’s why neither Wolfe or Simm’s has been getting any PT.
-Dustin
70-0
My original thought was 70-3, but then I forgot we can’t make 25 yard field goals.
Is it drinking time yet?
at this rate
it’ll be 84-0. And don’t you think that Schiano will call off the dogs anytime soon
can we take a knee
for the 2nd half?

last game?
with a win tonight, we’re bowl eligible…maybe you forgot.

It's even worse than I imagined.
And I’ve always thought it was pretty bad. The last time U of L football looked this disorganized, disinterested and uncoached, Ron Cooper was leading the pack. And he had the excuse of never having been a head coach before, if I remember correctly.
Kragthorpe will say the usual things — hell, we could all write his post-game comments right now. Unless he’s on the way out the door (oh, please!). But I’m not holding my breath for that, because it would mean he’s made a good decision, something he’s rarely demonstrated for the past two years.
theoldman
i'm now watching grey's anatomy with the wife
i can’t believe it’s come to this
i'm scared to go back
because i bet they’ve already scored again
I've seen this movie before....
This looks like the first game the Texas State Armadillos played in the movie Necessary Roughness.
Oh, my God.
Now I’m feeling really sorry for the kids. Schiano is an asshole, and he’ll poor it on. Let’s just pray nobody gets hurt during this humiliation.
theoldman
Yes, now I feel very bad for the guys on the team
they have quit—all of them
as badly as any U of L team ever
bowl eligible
haha your kidding me right… we were 6-6 last year and no dice, theres no way in hell any bowl would have touched this team
Honestly, Shiano needs to quit being a dick and stop running up the score.
He can’t honestly think our team will magically come back.
-Dustin
Koach's Post Game Comments...
“I’m just sick to my stomach” “We will just get back out there and try next week” “I’m the captain of the ship and I need to right it”. When will the agony end?
Stop whining about running up the score.
Just stop somebody.
If you cant……take your medicine and be quiet.
We are now like Murray State.
He Hate UK
Yeah, it's definitely tough being on the other side.
Remember what we did to Cincy, for example? On the other end of the stick though, fuck it’s depressing.
its different when you still worried about ranking or in mid season.
Season is over, Rutgers just need the win to get to a bowl. Style points do not matter in this game. That’s my point.
-Dustin
You cannot run up the score in the first half.
I refuse to beg for mercy. Someone just have some pride.

shiano can do whatever he wants in the first half
no class would be pouring it on in the 4th quarter. its our job to stop them, especially in the first half. No excuse for what we are doing. Rutgers should score as much as possible until the half is over, then starts calling things back
see my above statement.
What are they really achieving from this? At least try to get your running game better if your really trying to “improve” your team.
-Dustin
but OMG he plays on offense!

then they say he’s a good coach?

Keep the foot on the gas.....
Try to score on every play….in every quarter….no matter the score.
If we cant stop them, tough shit for us.

Craig james was dead right
playing on nat’l tv can be good if you play well, but it’s damaging as hell playing this way. there is no way on earth that Kragthorpe gets more than 10 hs players to come here next year. he’ll be scouting the intramural fields at this rate
someone needs to
put a horse’s head in kragthorpe’s bed
I'm going to work on some homework instead of watch football
God I never thought I would EVER say that.
-Dustin
I was trying to do that
Then realized that I was doing worse at my measurements homework than Louisville was in the game.
And my book is suddenly missing.
It’s a great night…
Yeah
This homework is a bitch. I’ve already decided not to do the first three, was hoping to get the last four done to at least get partial credit. Then found out my book got jacked out of my car at some point.
So maybe I’ll just drink instead.
I'd appreciate it
Although a friend has the solutions as well and he said there’s pretty much nothing on there. But I’m shooting for partial credit at this point.
i love
not ever having to do homework ever anymore
bwahahahahaha
Hustle
Say hello to your 9 to 5 job with me while i’m taking a nap for 3 hours in the middle of the day. :P
who said i don't nap
if you piece them together i’m bangin out 2-2.5 per day easy
ahhh I love naps...
In this world where things that were once good can turn so so so awful, it’s nice to know that some things never change. Naps are, and will always be, an absolute good.
the athletic dept
just sent me a letter andasked me for a grand and i won’t get to sit anywhere near the lockerroom
Go cards,
When is the next womens bball game?
I think they could score against us.
lol
“Louisville should watch out for things other than competing schools as the university strives to hang onto its beloved coach. Kragthorpe’s name is being tossed around at Louisville area Kroger stores for a job in produce.”
-Dustin
Since taking over a struggling program that suffered a 41-9 tenure under Bobby Petrino, Kragthorpe has almost rebuilt Louisville to bowl eligibility—something the Cardinals saw only nine straight years under John L. Smith and Petrino.
With the aid of Athletic Director Tom Jurich, Kragthorpe has been given appropriate time to build Louisville’s program the right way—something ESPN viewers are sure to hear plenty about during the Rutgers game.
Louisville should watch out for things other than competing schools as the university strives to hang onto its beloved coach. Kragthorpe’s name is being tossed around at Louisville area Kroger stores for a job in produce.
“Steve really knows how to build things right, and we’d love to have him here stacking apples and piling on potatoes,” Kroger managing assistant Ron Cooper said in a press release last weekend.
Kragthorpe has successfully advertised Kroger deals in an marketing deal between the grocery and the University of Louisville already this season, arguably more times than he’s won football games. The football coach would be a lucrative addition to an already successful company.
And we all know what Kragthorpe is capable of doing with previous success.
God I love English....
He has fire, make him the head coach please TJ. That’s all I want for x-mas.
-Dustin
In The End
It’s not really about what the fans think (probably a good thing) but what Jurich thinks. But how can you keep a guy who’s team has so obviously quit on him? I think that is the saddest part. Oh besides the fact that guys like Eric and Earl have to go out like this.

I would have loved to see...
…..English say something to Schiano.
I love how Krag said he’s not taking Cantwell out because its his senior year and how Schiano is a class act.
no fucking kidding
i think he’s literally insane. have you read the quotes about how much he loved to be duct taped to practice dummies by his dad’s players when he was a little kid? the guy has mental deficiencies!
we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Its not like we are playing a game meaning anything.
All joking aside I don’t think he should take him out either, not because it’s his last game, but because Simm’s is terrible.
-Dustin
if we could score 49 points in the first half we would have
gimme a fucking break.
whooeeoough... man, I almost got excited.
How about running the exact same play 4 times. Pretty fancy stuff from Brohm there.
we were just sand bagging the first half right?
we wanted to make our last win of the year something for everyone to remember. Coming back from 49 down. Woo Hoo!
-Dustin
can we at least make it respectable?
Is that too much to ask?
by Chris Redman is my hero on Dec 4, 2008 9:58 PM EST reply actions
Give me a break
We could score 35 in the second half and it would still not be respectable. We are the worst team in the Big East and we lost to UK.

I read ron's lips on the buchanan play...
He just kept saying, ’that’s horrible, that’s horrible, that’s horrible’. Poor guy.
Patrick trotting?
Unbelievable is a word that’s extremely overused and rarely appropriate, but this is approaching truly unbelievable status.

this may not be funny but...
Anyone know if Greg Robinson is available? Krag certainly seems to think he’s a good coach.

but just a reminder, for those that weren’t aware, with a win tonight…the University of Louisville football team is bowl eligible.

If we don't fire kragthorpe now...
We’re just going to be just as bad the next year or two, fire him, and then try to start over rebuilding. Thank goodness we have 7 recruits coming in to help next year.
no no no
we’re just a recruiting “late bloomer”…wait for those 3 and 4 star posers to get out of the way first.

This drive....
…is almost worse than the rest of the game. Basically they realize they can throw at will so they run, and then when they need yards they just throw it for what they need.
Pity is worse than just scoring at will.

at least one defensive player is still trying
When I heard it, I pictured Kragthorpe being airlifted out of the stadium

What makes this game even worse...
Is that erin andrews is wearing an eskimo parka and baseball hat. You can hardly even see her
If there is an announcement. . .
Will they announce that our coach is resigning tonight, or will they hold a press conference tomorrow? What I’m really asking is if there’s any reason to stay up.
I would think they would wait until tomorrow.
He doesn’t want to look like he is running scared.
I still don’t really think he is going anywhere, sorry for those of you who don’t want to hear that. I hope I’m wrong, but…
-Dustin
Let me explain...
We did the outline too, so we carved it but not before punching the holes in it first. There’s nothing wrong with yours.
I don't see how it's possible.
Even Ron Cooper never lost a game by this much

Erin Andrews could do a better coaching job. Who wouldn’t want to go play football for her? Maybe we just discovered a new recruiting phenomenon. It will be like the “Naked Man” move from “how i met your mother” – revolutionary

Why wouldnt Kragthorpe give Simms a series in front of his home fans?
I know Cantwell is a senior but good God…one series?
He Hate UK
if simms was a model player,
then yeah, but he did get suspended earlier in the season, Krag owes him nothing.
Cantwell has given more to the program than simms has. Im fine with him staying in
by Ben Go CARDS on Dec 4, 2008 10:57 PM EST up reply actions
You know what the great, and yet sad at the same time, part is?
This was Cantwell’s best game all season. I mean, he really did perform well. He was 24-33 (73% – highest all season) for 270 yds, 1 TD and for only the third time all season, 0 INTs. I mean, he was throwing the ball like we were hoping for all year. And let’s be honest, that fumble by Chichester on the first drive was really a TD as far as Cantwell’s part is concerned. And how about the play in the 4th where he split the safety and corner perfectly with a perfectly thrown pass to #88 (who is that btw?) on the sideline that was dropped when he got hit.
So on the one hand, he had a great final game of his college career, better than anybody was expecting. And at the same time, it’s so terribly depressing considering the outcome of the game. He was hurt by a defense that did not show up to play, injury hampered or not, and by a kicking unit that can’t make 25 yard field goals forcing him into all-too-familiar fourth down situations that he had no chance to get out of. It’s such a shame that such a great final performance was overshadowed so badly. I really feel sorry for him.
This is exactly why Simms had no business going into that game, ever.
Silver lining
Please let this be bad enough to convince Jurich to sack K and offer HC to English. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! I want to like football again.
