I may be skinned like an onion....
for repeating this but I have said for a while that (while I LIKE Coach P and support him in every way) I don’t get all the hype about what a great coach he is – does he know BB? Probably as well as anyone in the country….have I seen a LOT of evidence he can pass that knowledge along and teach the game? Not so much. Now, before you tear me apart, let me just say that yes, I appreciate the fact that he’s taken us to a Final Four and the Elite Eight last year…..I am a Pitiono fan; I just don’t think he’s as good a coach as a Tubby Smith OR certainly, Denny Crum in his era. Still love my Cards though and still behind Coach P win or lose. Regardless of how flat we looked yesterday, I think we will go far in the tournament IF he can get their heads straight and get them back to the fundamentals. Sometimes, I think he may go too far and overteach rather than concentrate on the basics i.e. shot selection, assists, getting the ball to the tallest man on our team, on and on. Short attention spans – pretty obvious yesterday.

Advantage Tubby
…yeah, and there I was watching Sammardo “Sement Shoes” Samuels getting stuffed once again by a six-foot five white guy named “Ned” (seriously folks, our super frosh has less hops than a four day old pilsener glass of Pabst Blue Ribbon) while the untethered three point shooters (“The Suit”, Thegoodbadugly Edgar, and the too reticent Jerry) aimlessly wander the perimeter seemingly hoping that the kick-out will not come there way lest they have to take an important shot. The game against the Gophers somehow exposed something we already knew: This team needs somebody to tell them what to do; and with the absence of Padget so achingly evident we are an overripe oaf…staggering, aimless, undercoached, and clinging to a sense of privilege that had blown us up to a pre season #3.
Hi beautiful Linda…best to Tom.

ROZ!!!!!!!!
man, where have you been? CC hasn’t been the same without your occasional wisdom and insight….it is so good to have you back. I hope you and your family have a blessed, Merry Christmas. Your blog above is right on. Wasn’t that game a killer? A lot of depressed Cardinal fans out here. Don’t be a stranger, Roz.

May I Wish You
and all the members of this blogisphere, if not the very merriest of Christmases, than perhaps, the third or fourth merriest Christmas that you have ever had.

Results are a coach’s report card. RP has taken 3 diff teams to final fours and has won a NC w/ UK after taking over a program that was reeling from an embarassing probation.
You can’t say he’s not getting results. Therefore you can’t say he’s not a good coach.
You can make the argument that he’s not as great as the media/fans/etc…pump him up to be. I get that. You can say he’s not as great as Tubby, Denny, whomever as well…and you’re certainly entitled to that opinion. But the facts lead me to the opinion that he’s a better than 95% of all the other coaches out there and whether that’s based on X’s and O’s, recruiting, sports psychology, or luck….its results that matter.
Even Denny’s best teams usually started a little slow but came on strong in Feb/March and I think that’s the sign of a coach being able to take a bunch of individual talents and eventually getting them to buy into his system. Probably harder today than in the 80s to take these kids and teach the team concept b/c of the obvious NBA draw, AND1 videos, and the heightened sense of athletic entitlement as a result of many factors in our society.
but i digress…i can understand why you feel he’s not “great” and that tubby and denny are/were better in their era but I don’t think the results (when it matters) point to that.

I enjoyed your response....
yes, I too think P. is probably better at what he does than a large majority of coaches out there – oh, I remember all to well how slowly Denny’s teams started. I also remember that he was the best 2:00 coach in the business. I find myself waiting for an ally-oop or something at the end of one of these close games to light the players up and get the victory – love that kind of play. Like I say, I am a huge Pitino fan and believe me I’m glad he’s here; just wish he could get their attention – maybe by February, we’ll see it.

Denny was the best 2:00 coach--or for setting up one key play out of a timeout
not Rick’s strengths

One Key Play Indeed
….and I don’t think Denny would have allowed Grant Hill to stand unchecked on the mound, toss down the resin bag, check the sign for a fastball, take a deep breath, then wind up and throw a strike to Christian 90 feet away for The Killer in a NCAA Regional Final.
Ouch.
Unfair? To take an incident and put the spotlight on it again after all these years? Well, yeah, kinda. But it did happen.

I agree
Denny was great w/ 30 seconds and a clipboard. It might be unfair to compare Pitino and Crum b/c they’re so different and coached in different eras of CBB. If RP wins 2 NCs while at UL, can we call it even? : ]

im just tired
of every single pitino team having to start over from square one. no matter what you think of him, rick is terrible at getting one team to stand on the previous team’s accomplishments. it’s back to the drawing board, every single year. his overly complicated and physically destructive system, which prevents freshman from contributing here like they do at every other school in the country, is a big part of the problem.

you are right ....
I have wondered WHY we seem to be one of the few teams in the country who get these awesome freshmen yet they don’t seem able to contribute in their freshman year like many others at other schools do….why is that?

One of the problems with having myriad talent and a demanding coach is that players know they’re only one mistake away from sitting next to Will Scott on the bench. Many freshman don’t have the confident resiliency (or ignorance) to overcome that kind of pressure. I think Preston is the only guy out there that plays every second the only way he knows how. He’s still a liability at times but at least his urgency rubs off on the team…well, when they’re paying attention anyways.
SS has gotten plenty of green light so far though, maybe too much. Goode and Jennings seem like capable backups so I’m not really understanding why SS gets so much PT when he’s obviously “off” for multiple games in a row vs. inferior talent/size.
