Got my coach picked out....

I  think Koach may have decided that if he can't succeed here, he will just leave and that is what TJ meant when he said in yesterday's press conference that Krag will be back next year if he wants to come back.   It wouldn't surprise me at all if when he and Tj talked Krag said he would just leave if things don't get better.  I think that would be a kind thing to do - it would keep Tom from having to boot his friend out the door and the fans would be relieved.  Speaking of coaches, I watched the Ball State/Central Michigan game last night and I WANT THE CENTRAL MICHIGAN COACH!!!!!!!!!! WA WA WA (that's me crying and throwing a temper tantrum).  Even though they lost last night, he has won 3 championships and that team is soooo well coached and "pretty" like we used to be - rock hard bodies with NO fat - fast and mean and first class down to their uniforms and sparkly helmets.  Yeah.  I want him to be our new coach.  Butch Jones.....that'd be the guy.  Go CARDS  ,o)

I really think that now is not the time to talk about this.

That being said, I can’t resist replying and dreaming.

The Ball State – Central Michigan game was great. Several of those long completions made me think of the last few Petrino seasons and how great it was to watch UofL play. If we do get a new coach soon (I wouldn’t count on it) I think we should get an experienced coach who knows how to win in a BCS conference. Coach Kragthorpe proved he could get the job done at Tulsa, but has struggled in the Big East. I’m not sure a good coach in the MAC necessarily translates to a good coach in a BCS conference.

I have a dream too...

Hell if you want to dream I have a few names.

Tired of Fans

keep saying we should get a coach who knows how to win in a BCS conference. If that were to happen, we’d have to hire away a coach from a BCS school. That will absolutely NEVER happen at UofL. We have NEVER hired away a coach from a winning BCS program, and it’s not going to happen now. Even Florida took a chance on a mid-major coach from out west.

The absolute best we will ever get is a coach from a mid-major program or a coach who left another school e.g. Howard Schnellenberger after he left Miami for the USFL, or a coach who has been fired, e.g., Tommy Bowden, or Phil Fulmer. There is absolutely no way we are going to hire away a winning coach from a BCS program. Every time I hear that I think of the UK fans talking about Bill Parcells. Let’s get real, people.

But yes, Ball State does look good this year. And that quarterback sure can throw.

Card Truth

TJ and SK have had no conversations concerning “what if” the season ends up at 5-7. The season isn’t over until it’s over. Jurich is way too professional and SK too positive to have that conversation about a scenario that hasn’t happened yet. Does that mean that SK might leave when it’s all said and done? Stay tuned.

4 years

I’ve read this blog since the summer, and I just became a member. I have read all the rants about Krag and I feel most of it is unfair, but some is clearly justified. College coaches must be able to have at least four years to bring in his own players, fine tune his coaching staff, and make the program his. I think it was unfair for a guy like Ty Willingham at Notre Dame to get canned. Do I think Krag is really our long term solution? No way. His offense is bland and predictable and his defense is nowhere without Ron English. However, he should be given at least 4 years. I do believe after 4 or 5 years, all will realize that Krag is not the answer, and we will change coaches. If we were losing Big East games, but still going to bowls it would not be a problem. Then it would be a true rebuilding era. However losses to UK and Syracuse both years shows lack of heart. That is my biggest problem with Krag.

With all that said my wish list includes one person and he is at the UofL:

Ron English

Great idea

I think Ron English would be a great choice for head coach. He has the kind of intensity that I like. And, he seems to be able to take struggling players and turn them into true assets (Turrene anyone?). Really seems like he knows how to preach the fundamentals and passion, which are two things this team really needs right now.

Coach Kragthorpe proved he could get the job done at Tulsa.....

But see, here’s what’s wrong with that statement. He took a Tulsa program that was way down and proved he could go 7-5. He’s never, ever, ever lost fewer than five games. I don’t think that proves anything but mediocrity. He took a program that couldn’t get any worse and made it better. There are dozens of people across the country who’ve done the same thing.

That said, K came to Louisville and took a program that was already damn good and shot it in the head. The “off the field” stuff is bullcrap. Name one thing that happened “off the field” that a coach would have control over? It just so happened that those “off the field” things didn’t happen while Petrino was here. They did happen after he left.

So give K four years and guess what you’ll have — at least 20 losses.

In mgmt, it is well known that turnaround guys do not always make the best guys at

the top rung.

Turnaround guys have great energy and good stuff, and can get a program off the ground and make it even better than average

but lack the brilliance to take it the next step to the very highest levels (consistent top 10-20 in football for example)

Sometimes they do—Pitino is a good example.

But more often they don’t—let’s face it, not many do.

I do understand what your getting at and you are right the Coach has somewhat no control over the players during off time. However, the coach is responsible for the type of players he brings into the program, and making sure those players know the rules of the program while representing the team and the university off the field. The issue stemed from disciplianary issues with Petrino’s players after he left. Could it be he was possibley to lax on disciplining the team, and Kragthorpe actually did discipline them? I believe that was the issue. I do not want Louisville to have a rep like Florida St. or Miami when it comes to off the field issues.

We were known for hard-nosed but clean--and FUN- football

The problem is called “inflexible transitional mgmt”

in business circles

It means a new guy comes in and screws up a good thing up by insisting that his approach be used “RIGHT f-ING NOW!” - which can be a great thing for turnaround situations, but can —and did-produce disastrous results here IMO (and others). Flexible mgrs would have eased in their guidelines. (But frankly K is just not totally competent —period —either.)

K turned this into a turnaround situation and then TJ smeared our rep nationally to cover for his own rep as well as his less than stellar hire—in other words, "I didn’t fail after Bobby, No Way!!)

by frankpos on Nov 22, 2008 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe

But you cant always do things the same old way. Like I said I do not know all the problems or for that matter if the discipline problems were ever made public. If they were I sure would like to know what they were.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post

The biggest problem is that Kragthorpe came into the U of L situation with lots and lots of expectations on him, which the opposite of what he experienced at Tulsa. In that scenario, what the team needed was togetherness, self-belief, and the knowledge that they could reach their goals.

Kragthorpe seems to be good at that. He does encouragement very well, he could take a team with no self-belief and turn them into self-believers. I think he is an excellent sports psychologist. This does not make him a good coach.

Do a little research

Kragthorpe was 9-4 in 2005. Won the CUSA championship and the Liberty Bowl.

so he has never lost fewer than 4 games???

look at the top 10 and how many have 4 losses?

Do a little research..

Okay. I was wrong. The coach’s sterling record at Tulsa was 29-22: he went 8-5, 4-8, 9-4 and then 8-5. Woo hoo.

Here’s the thing about the “lack of discipline” issue. If it’s true that the “off-the-field” problems were somehow hidden under Petrino, then we have to assume that the local police were somehow in on the deal. I mean, what did Petrino do to keep guys from getting arrested while eating marijuana? What did he do to keep Trent Guy from getting shot in the back at an 18-an-under night at a downtown club? What did he do to keep Rod Council from going ape-crap crazy on his watch?

When Petrino was leading the program, the only “controversy” off campus involved to players and a paint-ball incident, for Christ’s sakes. Kragthorpe and his horde of preachers arrives on the sidelines and all of a sudden our team is a bunch of thugs and miscreants? Don’t buy it. The same people who are cluck-clucking about the “character” of the U of L football program under Petrino are probably the same guys who said disparaging things about Mike Bush. We had great kids here under Petrino, with a bad apple here and there just like any football program.

The attempts to blame this unraveling on “character issues” of the players is despicable. And it certainly shows a lack of “character” by those making the charges.

if you want a coach...

We should look at any of the Penn St. Assistants because they do the most coaching of any assistants in the country. JoePa is a great guy but all he does now days is sit in the top of the press box and call in some plays. The assistants run the practices and go out on the road and recruit people. There has got to be someone on that staff that could be the next great coach….

penn st assistants

have been with joe pa for over 20 years majority of them…

i am a HUGE penn state fan… after my first cards game in 1994 when PSU came to town and delivered a ridiculous whipping… i have been a follower… if they play tomorrow i would still eagerly cheer for the cards….

but yea…
