Open Thread: Louisville at Memphis
Louisville Cardinals at Memphis Tigers, Oct 10, 2008 8:00 PM EDT
I've gone ahead and made the executive decision to sit both Gyrating Go Cards and Please God Let Us Win Baby until basketball season. It's not a decision that's at all reflective of their respective 2008 football performances (although, uh, 27-2...seriously GCC?), I just think it's the best move right now for this blog and this program.
It's become pretty clear to me that it's going to take something drastic, something risky, something extraordinary to get the rock rolling in the proper direction.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet This Guy:
Your entire life has been building towards this moment, This Guy. It's time to step up and make a play.
All right, I should be here for the majority of the night, so let's go ahead and tear it up together in the comments section. Also, make sure you properly enjoy the awesome new feature which allows you to see new comments without having to refresh the page. What does "properly enjoy" entail? Whatever you want it to, kids.
Go Cards.

Oh my
I just dont know if my heart can handle losses to UK and Memphis in the same season.
I like the drastic touch with This Guy. In the spirit of going big tonight, I’m gonna say that the Cards come away with 3 INTs to secure the win.
Get the playbook out Krags, I want some fireworks tonight.
He's This Guy
That’s all you need to know.

I got
a little under two hours of sleep last night, so if I start clammering for George Stripling to get more touches, just let it slide.

I love Vic on the sweep on play 1 -- the guy just gets yards
Also I hope we run the ball 60%+ of the the time tonight. I’m really fearing a team that passes a ton. especially to good WRs.
Earl Heyman
Jessen was in on that last play — did he start or did they just switch Earl out?
Overall pretty sucky start.
Four yard run for a first down
after the QB was hit in the backfield. A bit embarrassing.

One side looks fired up
And it ain’t ours.

Well, at least we can look forward to the 4th Quarter
Where we are being outscored like 100 -2.
Predict where we end up on Memphis's list:
10 – Nichols State
17 – Arkansas State
17 – Marshall
30 – UAB
41- Ole Miss
42 – Rice
Looks like were headed for Arkansas State territory
What the hell
That’s a terrible spot. He was like 3 yards beyond the 1st down.
I’m vacillating between indifference and extreme frustration. Why is Cantwell still in there?
Bilel
You might want to take that one back to the middle of the field.
TD GUY!
Woooooo!!!! He was wide open there. That play action is workin’ Actually on the replay he just flat outran his guy. Good for him — no one deserves it more than Guy.
Cantwell is still too gimpy to play the rest of this game.
Ryan Payne, welcome to point scoring!
What in the world was their safety doing?

He knew that Burns is our #1 weapon.
You gotta double cover him.
Gnat
now has more pass break ups than the rest of the team for the season, I think.
With Scott Long back and Trent scoring that TD
Do we get to start saying stupid things, like, we’d kill UK if we could play them now.
Lattarius Thomas
I haven’t seen him at all — I keep thinking he’s out there because Covington has his number now. But I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen LT but I have seen Sergio Spencer a great deal.
Good job D! Memphis seems to have given up the downfield pass.
Also I think my eyes...
…..are deceiving me but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Doug Beaumont drop 2 passes? If KRAG has messed up Doug B’s hands I’m officially pissed.
I believe the first pass hit his hands at the speed of sound
That last one, however, was ugly.
I love Guy
But don’t we lose every game where we get a TD kickoff return?
I was about to post that...
….but didn’t want to ruin the moment like I did in the UK game last year when a Friend of Card Chron was watching at my house….as we were jumping up and down celebrating I said it and totally ruined the mood.
But yes ,we always lose when we have kickoff return for TD.
So your're saying I ruined the mood?
What if I put some Barry White on and chilled the cherry wine?
I'm saying
I’m glad you said it because we were all thinking it. Maybe this is the game that breaks the curse!
Your bold move would have more pull if
everyone else on the team weren’t playing like crap.
Next game: a Hunter in the Woods with a Long bow swating at a Gnat with “This Guy” in the foreground Bowling [pronounced “Bolen”, saying “Hey, man” and eating a Heath bar. Make it happen.
Wooha
Memphis safeties are obsessed with Johnnie Burns.

where the hell did the special teams come from all of a sudden?!?
don’t know but damn I like it
Okay, for all the crap I give Krag for his answers
I think I’d go ape shit crazy if I heard my coach say it was a heck of a ballgame at halftime when we were down 14 after some stupid plays.
so special teams shows up...
but the defense is MIA. With the yardage they’ve racked up, lucky they only have 21 on the board at this point. had just a few of all the drops been caught, it’d be much worse.
You know how we felt after the UConn game
That’s how I’d feel if I were a Memphis State fan right now.
Anyone have any thoughts on how Samardo will do filling in David's shoes?
Will we run less high post?
wow, Cantwell leveled that guy
love his toughness, but he’s sure missed a lot of throws.
Seriously?
Seriously? I mean, seriously?
I love Vic, though. He has looked good this half. Also the basketball scrimmage is just like 2 weeks away.
so it's only fitting
now that the special teams has disappeared, the defense is back!
Weird
When was the last time we had a kickoff return for TD? UK game last September.
When was the last time we had a blocked field goal for a TD? I can’t even name it
When was the last time we had a fumble return for TD? WVU 2006?
How bizarre to get them all in one game.
We still aren’t good, but are reliably unpredictable.
I wonder if the UConn fans felt as guilty
about their win as I do right now. Granted, it’s hardly a win yet. But the fact that we’re even in the game is insulting to the football gods.
Love the play call
4th and 4 from the 10 and you throw it into the first row……
we may win this game yet. I feel strangely unsatisfied. beats losing though.
Yeah, middle of the field is open all day.
Let’s throw the ball where no one can get it.
Vic
He’s good huh? Am I crazy or he is really good? Love the jump for extra yards….even if it ended 5 yards short.
But I think he’s really good is all I’m saying.
I’ll take the next few plays off.
QB's How to beat Card Defense 101
9 yard passes to your left, just inside the line. We were lucky this time.
Go Cards!
Close Call
Statistically we were dominated in this game; we were extremely lucky to steal a victory tonight. I am very concerned with the conservative play calling in this game had it not been for the special team TDs and defensive TD we would have lost them game no questions asked. I am a firm believer in Kragthorpe needing to rebuild but damn man call the game like you have a pair!

Harry and Lloyd
A QB who can barely walk to his left, and we keep calling that same damn rollout against Hunter’s body! Could somebody please convince Bolen to hit the line of scrimage with his head up. As it would greatly reduce his tripping over his own or one of his lineman’s feat!!Can Powell still play defense?Good things happen when we strech the field. Why don’t we do it more often on earlier downs and earlier in the games??I realize that the buck stops with Coach Gilthorpe but I am not ready to let Coach Brohm of the hook just yet!!“Dumb and Dumber3…..Off Tackle and a Cloud of Dust!!!”
THE CHUNKSTER!!
The most depressing thing: I enjoyed watching the flea-flicking Memphis
offense more than ours
I kept smiling when they’d run -and complete-one of those things…
and then frown, realizing, hey! that wasn’t us
Depressing it was
Memphis had a really good spread offense, good thing their receivers were wearing bricks for hands. I do not think we match up well with the spread. Our D was built for stoopping traditional formations. Our linebackers needed to be dropping back into coverage instead of blitzing so often. We should have been blitzing one giving us a 5 man rush and having the other 2 drop back into passing lanes or guarding against the screen. When we did get burnt it was because we were rushing 6-7 guys.

Timeouts
Yet another gross mismanagement of timeouts. UofL gets the benefit of one of the worst spots in the history of football at the end of the game on Vic’s run and the officials don’t review it. Koach, continuing with his mastery of the misuse of a timeout, calls one to give the officials one last opportunity to review.
Every other coach in America with a modicum of strategery tries to hurry-up and snap the next play as quickly as possible. Koach, on the other hand, calls a timeout. Just excellent.
