What...the hell...was that?

I haven't been this embarrassed by a Louisville football team since, oh I don't know, Sept. 24, 2005. After a week in which they were mildly lambasted for their poor performance against Murray State, it's mind boggling that such a seemingly talented defense could come out so flat and be absolutely HUMILIATED by a Middle Tennessee State team that couldn't move the ball at all against a perennial Sun Belt cellar dweller.

Obviously there's much more to be said, but I'm not in the mood right now so this is it for tonight.

No, no, no.... F-ing , NO!
I came to this game specially to see how we handled our defense and penalties

but..

there was no F-ing D

AGAIN!

and the stupid penalties there -- AGAIN!

And K limply doesn't try to score at the end when we're well short of the spread, AND in post-game he talks of 'minimizing their touches' by letting  Allen run, oh , a bazillion times

Last wk I said we barely won a no-win game..

this week we lost a no-win -- big

A Flaming, Steaming Turd
That's what our defense was tonight. Nothing else to say other than that.

Positives..........
.....uh......, they only scored once in the second half. On a 79 yard run. That should have been stopped at the line. While two of our guys watched him run by. So, yay.

Oh, fuck.

Pitiful
Tonight's showing on defense in front of the entire country was embarassing. Something must be up with the D. Woodny(the "starting" RC) did not play one time on defense. I saw him get into the game once on a punt return, and that was it. This defense was supposed to be the most talented we have had at UofL in a long time, and they were keeping up with our offense in spring and summer workouts. As we know, our offense isn't too shabby. I'm wondering(and I know this is crazy)if maybe coach K is holding the D back a bit, and not showing our full hand. It seemed like we haven't been all that creative with our packages in these first two games, which is much different from the last few years, and we have the same D coordinator. Maybe it's to make it seem like we are bad when we really aren't. I know it's extremely unrealistic and I don't know why Krag would do anything like that but I guess I'm being very hopeful. Also I'd like to say that the officiating was abysmal tonight, several late hits against MTSU that weren't called. Kinda wished Harry would have beat some bitches. Oh well. We got the win, and as a fan all I can do is hope the D gets it together for UK because if they don't...we get demolished.

Embarassing
There's nothing in the realm of written or spoken word that can accurately portray how abysmal our defense is.

Exposed
I was hoping I would wake up and realize things weren't so bad, but it didn't work. I have no idea what the problem lies, but there is a definite problem that has about, oh, 10 days to get fixed.

I have no idea who takes responsibility for that debacle, but it needs to be shared. Hell, on the short yardage play where the receiver was uncovered, not only did all of the defenders not notice the uncovered receiver, but neither did the entire bench or coaching staff he was standing right in front of. It almost doesn't need to be mentioned that there was piss poor tackling and minimal pressure on the QB.

I also agree with Adam- where in the hell was Turrene? The worst case scenario would be to at least but him in with a nickel type package as I was tired of seeing our LBs trailing 5 yards behind the slot receiver on every passing play.  Whatever the problem- get it fixed!

Willie Williams
So where is this monster, Willie Williams>  Where is this linebacker who's such a monster you almost don't want to let him practice with the "boys" for fear he'll hurt 'em?  Oh, there he is, over on the sideline with Woody Turrene?

But wait? Isn't he supposed to be a pretty large bad-ass specimen?  The guy I saw with these ol' eyes looked  more like a DB and an LB and I don't know why I'm going on about this because the defense just sucks and now the whole world knows it.

If somehow the team runs the table, a monstrous "if" I realize, this team would not be allowed to play in the title game, I believe, because of this embarrassment.  The whole team and staff should be ashamed of itself -- and Cary made a great point above about the coaching staff saying absolutely nothing about the uncovered wideout.

People shouldn't boo college players, but it's easy to understand why they did.  We played defense like the Bush administration practices foreign policy -- "look, over there!  Let's go run after 'em!.  No wait, they're over here!  Run, run!  Be very afraid! Aaaaah!

The Streak?
Last year's pasteing of the BB featured the same defensive coordinator with the same defensive schemes as we have this year.  The BB scored enough to win most games,  but not that one.

Our players this year on defense are faster, bigger  and at least as motivated to win.  They're a more talented bunch than the Wildcats can field.  I believe our defense will stop the BB more often than our offense will be stopped.

Some tweaking before the 15th is in order,  more effort and enthusiasm is called for, but the outcome of the game ... The Streak Stays Alive!!

Card Chronicle has now reached meltdown status.
Well, I might as well jump on the dog pile of berating the D.

If this was an isolated problem I think I would be better able to deal and understand it. Afterall not everything works all the time. But in the 1st half nothing work on D. Nothing. Our stunts on the D-line didn't cause pressure, our CB strong side blitzes did nothing other than leave WR open in the flats. Our LB's and CB over-perused on play actions and  pump fakes leaving at times a 3rd of the field empty during an active pass play. Just gross.

This is a wholesale failure on the defense side; the wrong plays were called, after MTSC scored (repeatedly) adjustments where not made, and what was called was not executed effectively.

On the plus side: I always like the games were the Cardinal Bird skydives in.

bad
"Middle Tennessee, which rushed for only 18 yards against Howard Schnellenberger's Owls in the opener, ran for 265 yards against the Cardinals. They averaged 10 yards per play in the game, piling up 555 yards overall. They scored on five straight first-half drives."

24 hour rule
First of all I'd like to say that everyone's remarks (whether dismal or optimistic) are justified.  I was as p/o as anyone last night but as a former defensive back for a small college team I'm reminded of a few things that also apply now as a fan sitting in the stands.

My coach was always sure to remind us of the 24 hour rule following a ball game; that regardless of a victory or defeat we only had 24 hours to celebrate or dwell after which it was time to move on and go 1-0 the next week.  Don't get me wrong there are no execuse for our TEAM's performance but I think by 11:00 PM we (as fans) need to move on from our paradoxical win/loss and support our guys this week.  Let's show them what U of L fans are about and give them a chance to show us what they are about next Saturday!
