ESPNU has got to go (or change significantly)

Mike, or any of the readers of this blog, how can we petition to get things changed with ESPNU?  (From what I have read on this site, I can think of at least three people who could provide far more coherent insight.)  I am all for a station fully devoted to college athletics.  I have paid extra on my cable package to watch the station with somewhat regularity.  But for the love of the game, please stop glamorizing the role of the broadcasters so damn much.  When the game starts they show the list of things they are going to cover on the game like it is a grand production or the 11 o'clock news, not a football game.  Only thing we were missing was a Lou Holtz pep talk.  Fans tune in to see the game with great footage and great (relevant) commentary.  Thats it.

Ok, maybe one other thing...some sideline reporters as well.  The select company of Erin Andrews and maybe Michele Tafoya and only a couple other belong anywhere near the field.  There is no secret why this has become common place.  Beside the unmentioned feature that gives them these positions, if they cannot say anything of value, quit wasting our time.  (Everyone like funnel cakes, big deal, and why don't you try and cover both sideline as well, without multiple references to their facial expressions.)

It was pointed out in the game thread, but how can Brock Bolen come as a surprise to them?  I would feel safe to assume, that they were given the media guide and possibly other materials to review for the game.  Just check the depth chart, check last season's stats, and the injury report and one could easily foresee some touches for the big guy.

Other readers have also expressed their  dislike of the tailgating and food (mentioned three separate times?).  We lay claim to being a large tailgating site, I know. But EVERYONE does it so why put it on TV.  Also, with the problems we have had this year in getting the plays in a timely manner, it is unexplainable how they miss the snap multiple times.

And the most frustrating part of the broadcast, was consistent and unabashed bias shown to the home team. As Mike pointed on the game prediction post, the 1994 meeting was a UofL victory, but their only hilight was a NCST interception?  And how many times did we hear "The 'Pack is Back!"  I counted three different occasions where Rod had fantastic coverage and was in position to make the play, but their only point of emphasis was the receiever.

As painful as our lack of precision on O at times was, these Turds of a television crew were more excruciating to take.  (This was worse than Mike Adamle-of American Gladiators fame-calling the USF debacle for ESPU in /05...and dare I say it, Mike, Dickie V and his broadcasts of innumerable off topic references.)  Most of us are in jobs that we don't truly enjoy to the fullest, yet these morons get paid to watch football and put out such a pathetic product.

The commentary was so stupid...
I soon just tuned it out

Occasionally, though it would break thru my consciousness - such as with the inane Bolen stuff

I wasn't sure if i was watching the UL game or the food network half the time.  If your going to make us pay to watch the channel, you can atleast have people who know what they are talking about.

The ESPNU coverage was awful
I was complaining from the beginning -- like them showing us the last 3 minutes of a blowout Army-Temple game instead of the start of our game.

To them mispronouncing a ton of names (even though there's a media guide with the right way to pronounce names).

Because they started late, they were showing the lineups during the game, and we'd miss the start of plays.

Cutaways in between every play -- and then come back RIGHT as the ball is snapped. I want to see how they are lined up before the play.

The sideline reporter was on the NC State side and gave us all sorts of information about NC State, but we had at least 7 guys limp off and had no updates.

Cheering for NC State. The whole game.

And the updates on other games THE WHOLE TIME. If I chose this game on ESPNU, I made a decision NOT to watch the 4 other ESPN/ABC/CBS games.

So if anyone has any ideas other than just complaining like I just did, let me know and I'll help.

Exactly
Thanks for mentioning the Army/Temple decision. Forgot about that among the many things that followed.

ESPN - NFL Coverage
ESPN is dropping the ball in other areas as well.  I've tried to not spend every Sunday watching football all day so I've basically just tuned into the night-time SportsCenter to see highlights.

However, SportsCenter has decided to materially cutback on NFL highlights.  They will actually review games by showing one single highlight of a game and THEN go to Merrill Hoge and Ditka and have them TALK about the game for 3 minutes.  I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that people really don't care about what the SportCenter people THINK about the game.  We want to see highlights (tons of highlights) and get statistics for fantasy football.  No talk...want highlights.

Oh, and SportsCenter has a penchant for showing extended live versions of Sunday night game postgame interviews.  A couple weeks ago, we were lucky enough to witness a 12 minute rumbling soliloquy by LaDainian Tomlinson and then have Belichek dodge questions for 8 minutes.  Sportscenter opted to show this rather than highlights of other games.  Sheesh!

I am now off the soapbox, but who's with me in starting a new sports coverage network (with no hockey or Nascar coverage).

Sportscenter NFL Highlights
I dont like the direction ESPN is going either but I think the NFL highlights are limited until after the Sunday night game on NBC.  This is why NFL Sunday Countdown is gone on ESPN...NEXT.  I heard someone bitching about it last year on a fox radio show.  NBC gets their football night in america BS and ESPN gets limited highlights.

ESPN is so watered down with talent to get the job done correctly on their 18 channels and radio, its no wonder they cant get a decent broadcast.  Fox-41 is as good and thats a sad statement.

Bad News
"U of L vs. Cincinnati time, TV set

The University of Louisville Oct. 13 football game at Cincinnati will kick off at 7 p.m. EDT and will be televised on ESPNU. "

NOOOOOO

Well I guess that means
We all will have to road trip it to Cincy.  At the last two meetings (attended both) their were more UofL fans than for the home team.  Word is that the game though is becoming similar to WVU and USF for UC and are expecting a sellout.  Hopefully we can get lots of fans there and knowing this, I am definitely making the trip now, just to avoid the cruel and unusual punishment of viewing.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
