Predictions and Such

I havent posted a diary since the basketball season (mainly because Im lazy and dont have an original thought in my head) but since we are up to about two diary posts/day, I figured I'd get in on the action.

In prior years, I would've gladly made a prediction as to how I think our season would go. But this year, its so up in the air that I dont want to jinx us. Its a very strange, new feeling to start the season and say we either have a chance to play for a national title or, possibly, finish third in our conference.

I now know what the fans of elite programs go through every year. It is a bit stressful, but its better than the alternative, (Wondering if we are going to get past ECU, Southern Miss, etc. so I can spend my New Years Eve in miserably cold Memphis. Dont get me wrong, I always had a good time at the Liberty Bowl and the people of Memphis were always nice, but places like Miami and New Orleans couldnt be more perfect to offset the miserable chill of winter. Plus, Beale Street is just Bourbon Street Jr.)

I have anxiety issues this time of year because the season is about to start, and Im nervous. If August 30th doesnt get here soon Im going to die from this horrible feeling in my stomach (I call it butterflies but my doctor calls it cancer). When I stop and think about how much emotion I put into the Cards, it reminds me of Steve Martin in "Parenthood", when he is talking about his son's little league baseball game,

"Isnt that demented? That a grown man's happiness depends on whether a nine-year old catches a pop-up. What if he missed?"

So, what will happen if the Cards "miss"? Well, there will be lots of tears shed. And blood. Not mine, other peoples. I dont deal with stress well.

Early Bold Prediction = I do, however, think that we will make it to the '08 Final Four.

Primal tribalism remnants? Pack mentality?
Vicarious participation? Projection of desires? Reversion to childhood?  CANCER?

No, no, it's far simpler why grown men dance like puppets to 18 yr olds in pads or sneakers
