Dexter Heyman commits to Louisville
Christmas is still dominating my life (my family is very large, and, uh, merry), but I'm taking a brief respite in the internet world to share the great news that Male High standout Dexter Heyman will play his college ball at Louisville.
"I'm going to make a commitment this week," Heyman said after getting 11 points and 13 rebounds in a 72-53 win over Henry Clay in the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic at Fairdale. "I re-evaluated everything and just figured out it's past the point to be at and I really have to get down to the nitty gritty.
"I felt like I had to be honest and make a commitment and I feel like Louisville is the best situation for me."
A member of The Courier-Journal's first-team All-State squad, Heyman said he would call the U of L coaches in the next few days to make his commitment official.
"I want to be in place where I am comfortable and a place that will be really good for me as a player and a person," said Heyman, who played a lot of defensive end at Male but could play a number of positions for the Cardinals. He even played wide receiver.
Heyman said a number of other schools were still recruiting him, despite his connections with U of L. Earl Heyman will be a senior defensive lineman next season.
The younger Heyman said those ties made him look at the situation harder.
"I wanted to see how everything played out (at U of L) as far as the coaching changes and the fanbase," he said. "I wanted to know they were looking at me for me and not just as Earl's brother. I didn't want to go to Louisville off of politics."
With the insight he learned from his brother and several former Male teammates at U of L, Heyman said he felt like he could make the right decision.
And despite a 6-6 season and some criticism in coach Steve Kragthorpe's first season, Heyman believes U of L is that school. The Cardinals have made several coaching changes since the season and still haven't hired a defensive coordinator.
"I think with the new coaching changes that this program is headed in the right direction," Heyman said. "In my opinion, I feel like in his first year coach (Kragthorpe) did a really good job. He established himself and earned the respect of his players.
"I think this program is headed in the right direction."
This is easily the best piece of football news since the Rutgers game, so feel free to clap your hands or give a half-hearted fist pump that no one else sees.
I'm not going to have time to get a Morehead State preview up, so if you've been hitting refresh every 30 seconds since you woke up, you can go ahead and stop. You can, however, check out brief game previews here and here.
I'll be back with an open thread before tip.
