Run for 7 on first, throw on 2nd, run on 3rd. This is why I shouldn't get excited for games.

Pissed.

That was a booming punt.
Although I don't think field position really makes a difference to our offense.

Good job by the D there. I can't believe Palmer actually turned around to play the ball in the air. How many penalities have we seen on LBs on that play for pass interference for just putting their arms up with their backs to the ball.

More than 3rd and 6
Doug Flutie (!) just said we are only 27% at >3rd and 6 and 50% for under 3rd and 6.

Maybe because no matter what, on 3rd down we run a 6 yard play.

STOP HAVING ANYONE RUN UNDERNEATH SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN.

Cadence
It looks like Heyman has figured out their snap count because he is jumping RIGHT at the second before they snap it.

Break Part II
We had nobody covering Slaton.

by Mike Rutherford on Nov 8, 2007 8:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

White hurt?
As has been oft-discussed, White and Slaton take such a punishment on every play, they are so prone to these little nagging injuries where you can't pinpoint when they got hurt.

Our offense sucks hard.

No more Allen
Seriously, nothing against the kid but we lose a great deal when he's in the backfield.

by Mike Rutherford on Nov 8, 2007 8:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What the hell?
What is all this "Louisville's secondary is all former offensive players" talk? Apparently Kragthorpe told the announcers this. Johnny Patrick and who else?

How does someone like Craig James get, and then keep, a job.

by Mike Rutherford on Nov 8, 2007 8:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like spin
...blaming Petrino for not having defensive talent?

I think Heyman played WR his frosh year and then switched to DT...

Seriously though, most teams switch HS offensive players to the defense. Kerry Rhoades was a hs QB and he turned out okay on defense.

Preston Smith was a QB in HS.

Raglin has been a safety for a few years. Heath (who hasn't seen the field since the 1st play of the 'Cuse game) was a HS defensive player.  Woodny has never played offense.

Council was recruited by VT as a CB.

So I can't really figure it out.

Sick of the Owen Schmitt fellacio
Yeah he's big, he's white, he's got a mohawk and he likes to hit people. Why does this make every announcer in America talk about him for four quarters?

by Mike Rutherford on Nov 8, 2007 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Stripling!
A) the screen pass to him not allen or tronzo!

B) he broke a tackle!!

Those are two positive developments.

Ya, bobby...
...he has been playing better too in the safety spot.

Still can't cover guys man to man.

Petrino shouldn't have converted him from his natural offensive position: right tackle.

How many more defensive linemen can we lose this year? Or this game?

Who is the 5th string DE?

Do we burn Patrick Grant's redshirt?

Line Malik up at DE?

WTF?

Bails out a terrible play call on 3rd and 1.

Well,,,,,
Tell ya what though.  I am glad to see our guys are fighting out there.  Thus far absolutely no give up.......

Why do we have to play one step down to the level of our opponents.

And why would we run the same play on 3rd and 1 when we got such a lucky spot.

STRIPLING IS THE SMALLEST RUNNING BACK ON THE TEAM, HE HAS NO BUSINESS GETTING THE BALL ON 3RD AND SHORT.

WVU running up the middle
In the games I've watched them, their "run up the middle" offense hasn't worked that well.  Somehow we've slowed Slaton down although he's been bottled up a few times and then busts out in the 2nd half.

Hopefully we can keep it up.

Every time
A screen works once we run it seven time when it doesn't work. We've actually got a chance here, but this play-calling is killing us.

We're averaging .8 yards per carry. And Powell isn't getting touches?

by Mike Rutherford on Nov 8, 2007 10:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ya, looks like WVU...

...has adjusted to the screen.

Finally we start throwing downfield, but it didn't quite work out (they didn't show a reply so no idea whether Harry should have had that catch.

The D is keeping us in it, the offense (and the playcalling) is not complying.  Does that sound familiar?

That was a great pass -- even if it was a questionable decision. That was a great pass, and Douglas makes that catch more than most college WRs.

But whatever.

Late hit
I don't understand how that wasn't a late hit on the last kick off.

The just showed it again on sportscenter.

Those 15 yards were worth like 6 plays and 4 minutes in the stubbs playbook.

krags
i think this game gives kragthorpe another few years....we may not have won, but i think we played well and the defense especially stepped up...there was some questionable play-calling throughout the game, but overall i am as pleased as i could possibly be without winning....go cards

by cardsfan on Nov 8, 2007 11:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I guess we should be resigned..
...to KRAG coming back -- but hopefully Stubbs goes.  That guy sucks.

I guess we also need a new DC, although I wish we let Cassity run the blitzing man-to-man that we used last year.

Either way, assistant coaches can make bad coaches look better than they are and good coaches look worse than they are. So hopefully next year we get a couple of the former. Maybe this year we had the latter.

by CardsFan922 on Nov 8, 2007 11:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, we're going to get K at least one more yr
I agree fully --  Stubbs must go.  (Although if K is such an O genius I don't understand why we're so unimaginative--doesn't he give input??)

Cassity--  something was really weird with the D.  Someone sure as hell didn't know what they were doing --in evaluating or preparing the D for this season.  Ten games in we're finally playing semi-OK.
Something doesn't feel right there...and never really has to me with him.

Wish we'd just really clean house and bring in a Pitino -level FBall coach-- rather than trying to buy one on the cheap. Aren't (Weren't)  we at a different level of aspiration?

Oh, well...IJIT (in Jurich I trust)

Nice to see Mario
standing and watching the WVU defenders tip, bobble, and eventually intercept that last pass.  I try to avoid being critical of our players but that got under my skin. Jump in and make a play!  Have some pride!

by saints05 on Nov 8, 2007 11:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Mario
On the sportscenter replay it wasn't like he was just standing there.  He was behind the play and there were 3 WVU players around the ball. He followed the ball, but I mean come on, he couldn't have gotten that ball.

People sure are hard on that guy.

Touche'
...Made that comment out of emotion.  I commend him for making key catches throughout the game (knowing he is not 100%) including the leaping touchdown grab late in the game.  If not for that play there would have been no final heave on our part, just WVU taking a knee in the victory formation.  Go Cards!

Very very frustrating end to the game
Just when I thought that we actually had a chance, well, you know what happened. I can at least say that our defense has improved, though that Pat White TD at the end was a major fuckup. On the other hand, our offensive playcalling SUCKS OUT LOUD MOST OF THE TIME!!!!! BTW does anybody have any inside info about whether Charlie Stubbs will be here next year?

To end on a positive note, I will add that I liked how our team didn't give up. With all the crap that's happened this year, I wasn't sure even that was possible.

Ah
If I see Stripling in on 3rd and short with no lead blocker one more time, I'm going slap Kragthorpe with a $4 hot dog from the concession stand at PJCS.

Too many screens, I mean I know WVU was taking away anything deep and the O-line had trouble stopping a 3 man rush, but come on...

Stripling played well, but we've got to find someone else with some speed that can break tackles because AA and BB NEVER break tackles.

Overall I'm happy with the effort and have high hopes for these last 2 games.  I want to go bowling!!!!

Go Cards!

The Bolen that I have watched has virtually NEVER been brought down by the first man.  No question.  Your assessment on AA is very correct.

My how a year can change things
Great talent, but can't capitalize on opportunities.  WVU play calling and lack of execution handed us the game wrapped, with a bow on it.  So depressing to be so close but so far away (not only this particular game).  CARDiac Cards.

Positives:  Brian gave us a chance.  Gary Barnidge (TE of the decade).  Better effort on the whole.  Defense gave us a million chances (held White and Slaton to ONE long run).

Negatives:  Dont have the patience to fully discuss some of the calls made.  I am as big a Stripling fan as anyone, but mix it up.  If Bolen wasnt healthy he wouldnt be on special teams.  Trent (Make a Play)! Pat Carter (Make a Play)!

by adamcards on Nov 9, 2007 12:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

ESPN
TWWL may be a bigger disappointment this year than ND, Nebraska or Louisville football.  ESPNU telecasts have been consistently awful.  Every broadcast is focused on things other than the game at hand.
And Craig is the the proverbial back breaking straw.  There are roughly 50 football players on both sides of which announcers and viewers should be aware of.  Who ever said it was okay to talk about the same person for extended periods, show a special segment about them, and replays on the sidelines when they have touched the ball maybe 4 times and made zero impressive blocks. Schmitt is talented.  A freak of nature strength wise.  Get over it.  There are so many more talented people who could give far greater insight.  Watching a disappointing game on ESPN is now becoming the salt in the wound.

by adamcards on Nov 9, 2007 12:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

well where to begin....
Well guy's I think we came out and played a decent game last night.  Yes we lost but let's take a different perspective.

How many yards did we give up in almost every other game (particuarly the first 4 games)?  Our defense really stepped it up last night and came up with some key stops.

Was it perfect?  No.  But would most people have thought the defense that showed up at the Syracuse game could have ever done what the defense that showed up last night did (even with a pretty banged/injured squad)?

Have we arrived yet...No...but we are improving rapidly IMO.

Offense:

Minus a couple of turnovers and we were in the game.  The turnovers where "good" ones (like a helment on the ball when douglas foumbled).  Yeah I know no turnovers are good, but ours were not really from not protecting the ball, more about just great football plays by the defense and a little luck for WVU.

Is anyone else tired of this boring offensive strategy?  Yes Brohm is a great QB but we have to run the ball more IMO.  And this does not mean  a couple dive plays.  Teams have to respect that we can run, and it will also help keep us out of the 3rd and longs.  Bowlen and Stipling need a chance to open up more. Bowlen I think averaged almost 4 yards a carry.  I don't know about you all but I'll take 4 yard plays all day.  Make that defense come up and stop them and then do some play action. Make them honor Brohms arm, and our backfield. Run some more counters, WR sweeps, stretch the field. We have to get the defense's to come up and stop the run.

I also think we need to do some fakes every once in a while on special teams.  We came up close multiple times on 3rd down.  We have not shown a fake all year.  Coach K you have nothing to lose, go for it.  Teams like WVU will score it's just a matter of time, so you can't keep giving them the ball back.  You have to take a little risk sometimes, especially since you have nothing to lose (5-4 going into game).

Overall:

I think we played well for a team that lost.  Even though we lost I feel we had victories within our team.  By that I mean that our defense finally felt what it was like to play as a team and make some stops.  Like I said it was not perfect (couple missed tackles, misalignments, etc) but definatly a step up from when we began.

I honestly think we can win against USF and RU.  Last night showed me that our team will not give up and will continue to grow as a team, and that is reassuring.

I'm still giving coach K a chance.  I hope he doesn't make me look like a fool.

Go cards.

I don't think I have ever typed that much on a board/website before. haha
