Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Big East power poll

Last week's ranking is the first number in parentheses, but you could have figured that out...most of you.

1. South Florida (1) (5-0, 2-0)

Last Week: Beat Florida Atlantic 35-23

This Week: vs. Central Florida

Doesn't matter if it's West Virginia, Auburn, Elon or Florida Atlantic, South Florida is going to beat you by just about the same margin...unless you're North Carolina.

2. West Virginia (2) (5-1, 1-1)

Last Week: Beat Syracuse 55-14

This Week: Off

I think Jarrett Brown is swell (but not neato), and I'm forever indebted to him for the Rutgers game last year, but West Virginia doesn't finish 6-0 without a healthy Pat White.

3. Cincinnati (3) (6-0, 1-0)

Last Week: Beat Rutgers 28-23

This Week: vs. Louisville

Had to change pants approximately five times over the course of watching them beat Rutgers on Saturday. Also, did anyone else see Ben Mauk doing the mock chop to the crowd after the game? Totally classless and yet so totally awesome at the same time because of the fans he was doing it to.

4. Rutgers (4) (3-2, 0-1)

Last Week: Lost to Cincinnati 28-23

This Week: at Syracuse

What the hell is up with teams laying eggs in revenge games at home this year? It's unreal. I was going to say that Mike Teel threw the ball way too much (38 attempts) until I saw that Ray Rice had 34 carries, which begs the question: did they play like six quarters without anyone noticing?

5. Connecticut (6) (5-0, 1-0)

Last Week: Off

This Week: At Virginia

Only upward mover of the week didn't play over the weekend.

6. Louisville (5) (3-3, 0-1)

Last Week: Lost to Utah 44-35

This Week: At Cincinnati

You guys see Cincinnati up there? Well I think we all just have to understand that any program is going to go through a tough time when a new coach is brought in, regardless of how talented the players he's inheriting are. But if we're patient and give this regime a chance, maybe, just maybe we'll see some of the same success that Bearcat fans are enjoying with their veteran coach.

What's that?

7. Pittsburgh (7) (2-3, 0-1)

Last Week: Off

This Week: vs. Navy

Bill Stull is praying that his thumb is healthy enough to play against Louisville.

8. Syracuse (8) (1-5, 1-1)

Last Week: Lost to West Virginia 55-14

This Week: vs. Rutgers

On the plus side, Otto is the new president of The Octonion.

Our Cards are two spots too high.
Didn't we lose to the Orangemen at home?  Do you really think we will beat Pittsburgh?

I should stop being so negative.  I forgot Coach K's post-game comment on WHAS, "We still control our own destiny in the conference".  Now I feel so much better.

From Top Ten to...
C-J  Jody Demling blog: "The bad news for the U of L fans is that most of the ratings have the Cardinals ranked somewhere below the top 75, including six over 100. The worst of all is the RPI where U of L is No. 110, which is 23 spots behind Western Kentucky University."

Mountaineers
I think the poll is spot on, but I really like the chances of WVU being just as good, if not better, with Jarrett Brown playing.  If for no other reason than Rich absolutely refuses to open up the offense with White in the game.  It's frustrating, mind-boggling, and occasionally heart breaking.  I still think the WVU-UL game will be a classic.

Classic Ass Whipping
I am afraid that both WVU and South Florida will really lay the wood to the Cards.  Did you watch WVU destroy Syracuse Saturday?

Not so fast my friend
I did see that game, and was still struck by the fact that Rich won't open it up.  He absolutely will not.  Yes, we won by 41, but it matters not.  UL will bring it in Motown, and we will have to open it up.  The Cards can still stop runs up the middle, and probably bubble screens too.  At this point, that's all we've got, and it is infuriating to watch.
